The song may be a bit cliche when refering to "getting away from it all," but I feel it sums up the mood of today's question.

My extended family has owned property in Long Beach, WA for as long as I can remember. For those unfamiliar with Long Beach (often overshadowed by its namesake in California), it's a small peninsula located just north of the Columbia River which separates Washington and Oregon.

http://www.thehewitthouse.com/resources/Pic121.jpg

A quick pic to show to location and the drive I look at. Seattle is at the extreme north.

Long Beach is a very popular tourist destination, especially since they have embraced some annual events which range from mainstream (4th of July, Rod Run to the End of the World, International Kite Festival) to more abstract (Jake the Alligator Man's Birthday). The city can get crowded during event weekends, but is a quaint and quiet getaway for me whenever I just need to get away from from the daily grind. It's not that I'm antisocial or don't enjoy some of the major events, but it's two different towns depending on what's going on. For some R&R, a quick trip during the middle of the week can quickly recharge the batteries.

No matter where (or what) it is, we all have somewhere or something that we do when we need more relaxation than usual. Where do you go when you need to get away from it all?

Last time it was Chicago...

Usually if I have to get away I'll get out and go for a drive. Rarely the interstate though. I'll take back roads that I know and make a big loop or something, without getting too far out of town.

I go to the beach in my ragtop and smoke a few cigarettes. It's both soothing and relaxing. Smaller, local beaches, not as congested.:thumbsup:

In L.A. I loved to go down to the harbor and watch ships come and go. I also enjoyed dropping by the equestrian center to watch the horses being turned out. Nothing like watching beautiful horses running and kicking up their heels in the sheer delight of getting out of their stalls and getting some excercise free from the burden of a rider.

If I had some time, I have always enjoyed a trip to the High Sierras to enjoy the clean air, beautiful views and solitude they can provide! Trout fishing is great relaxation too!

To get back to the original topic, I like to head to the Oregon Coast. These pictures are from a 2006 trip Hoover and I took to Cannon Beach:

http://www.gdwriter.q45.org/Cannon_Beach/PA210015.jpg

This is why I think I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world:

http://www.gdwriter.q45.org/Cannon_Beach/PA210024.jpg

http://www.gdwriter.q45.org/Cannon_Beach/PA210032.jpg

On that same trip, we continued north to Astoria, then crossed the Columbia River to Washington and hiked around Cape Disappointment, just south of Long Beach:

Erin and I were supposed to spend next weekend at her friends' beach house in Lincoln City, but she forget she has a prior commitment. The rest of March isn't any better, so now we're looking at April.

Side note: Why on Earth would someone name a place Cape Disappointment? Sounds like a bad B grade horror flick.

According to Wikipedia:

The cape was named on April 12, 1788 by British fur trader John Meares who was sailing south from Nootka in search of trade. After a storm, he turned his ship around just north of the Cape and therefore just missed the discovery of the Columbia River.[1] Alternatively, the cape may have been named in Nov. 1805 by a member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, which had recently succeeded in reaching the Pacific, when he found no ships in the vicinity, according to the journal of the expedition as recited in the Ken Burns documentary.

I've always heard the Lewis & Clark explaination.

Bad horror flick? I always thought it sounded more like a bad romantic comedy title...

But all kidding aside, I really like northern parts of Minnesota....the vast amounts of pine trees, small towns populated by log cabins, summer storms, thousands of lakes, bonfires...can't wait to be up there this summer.

Oregon coast is a hidden treasure. I'm worried people from Seattle will buy vacation homes down there and ruin it, or even worse... Californians.

My original plan for last year's L.A. trip was to drive back along Highway 1, up the PCH and Oregon Coast in the Bricklin.

The next time I'm down in Long Beach and have some extra time off, I'm going to try to drive down the Oregon Coast...

Oregon coast is a hidden treasure. I'm worried people from Seattle will buy vacation homes down there and ruin it, or even worse... Californians. :eek:By state law, the entire Oregon coast is public land. There are no private beaches in Oregon. Call us a bunch of commie liberals encroaching on personal freedoms, but most Oregonians recognize the natural treasures we've been given and have a long history of protecting and preserving them.

California was once paradise, and it always makes me sad to see how over-population has wiped out so much of its natural beauty. Along the central coast from roughly Santa Barbara to Monterrey, California is still gorgeous, but it's not overflowing with people, either. The same goes for the great redwood forests and coastline north of San Francisco.

I remember a TV show set in the early 20th century when a character, trying to get her partner to go with her to California, said there was a place so beautiful that they called it The City of Angels. You can still see those remnants in Los Angeles, but knowing how much has been lost forever is rather depressing.

Jesda

I'm not talking about public/private. Private beaches are usually cleaner anyway.

I'm talking about trashy people showing up and littering all over the place.

gdwriter

I'm talking about trashy people showing up and littering all over the place.Got it. Our beaches tend to be much less crowded since none of them abut a major metropolitan area like in San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.

Koooop

The beaches in Oregon tend to be less crowded due to the rain, fog, clouds, wind, cold water, sharks, rocks and the fact that they are generally void of hot chicks in bikinis.
