: We said hello...goodbye... (Or -- Auto Show Meet Curse, continued.)

According to Chad, the Auto Show meet instills the new car bug. The late and missed JD got his Brougham, Gary got his Seville...I can't remember if there were others...

So, true to form, while on a side jaunt w/my friend Bill to test an STS-V, which I didn't like...there happened to be an '08 DTS Platinum just waiting to be taken home. I loved it, but unfortunately, getting it would require a follow up trip the next week -- and a sacrificial lamb, previously known as my bleed me dry ETC.

So here it goes:

The car is amazing. Yes, Sal, the turning radius is a bit wide...but the Platinum interior makes it all worth it. The ride is plenty sporting enough for my needs, and it eats up highway miles like a T-Rex. So far, I'm very pleased. However, I know I'll regret the black paint, but it sure looks good clean...

So many levels of win here. Tough call between the performance of the STS-V and the plush comfort of the DTS Platinum, but you can't go wrong either way, and that interior is just INCREDIBLE.

How many miles were on the ETC? I find the Dr. Jekyll/Hyde personality of these cars so tear inducingly amusing... You and Austin had nearly identical ETCs in nearly identical condition, purchased 90k miles apart and while yours bled you dry, his has been the model of a well behaved citizen Northstar.

Weird ass cars.

wow, congratulations.... That's a very clean, classy, and beautiful Cady.... The interior is absolutely lovely!

And by the way, I am very interested to know why you didn't like the STS-V....

63,172 at the time of trade...it had 42K on it when I bought it. And I had the 2000, where his is a '99 which is "supposed" to be the worst of all years...

A week ago Friday, when we all got to Chicago, it was just an assumed fact that my next car would be an '08/09 STS-V. Motorwerks had one...I test drove it... Um...no. I could deal w/the buckboard wagon ride, as it was a performance attribute. It was made for Nurburgring, not the rutty streets of the Chicago suburbs. However, I will eat my words and admit that except for the birds eye maple wood trim, the interior felt cheap. Also, the seating position was unacceptable. The window sill was not deep enough for my arm, which is where it always gets propped. And worst of all, down near the accelerator, there was some kind of carpeted box underneath the deepest part of the dash that got in the way of my feet.

The 469HP was amazing, but it wasn't something I was prepared to live with on a daily basis.

The DTS is deliriously comfortable. The heated/cooled/massaging seats are the best seats since the articulating seats in a BMW 7. There is plenty of room. It is fast enough. It handles competently, but doesn't lose its comfortable ride. I think it looks better than the STS on the outside. And when contrasted against black, the ash wood that is slathered all over the place is only outdone by the Alcantara headliner.

Now...how to keep it clean...since black shows every little speck of dirt...

Thanks. I really wanted to like the STS-V...but for me, a car's comfort level is just as important as its looks and its performance. I'll never use the 469HP to its potential, but I'll enjoy the detail in the Platinum every day. Maybe I came on a little strong...I don't want to sound like I hate the STS-V, it just wasn't for me. I'm sure I'd say a lot of the same things about the CTS-V.

Ahh I stand corrected, for some reason I thought your Eldo had around 11000 miles when you got it. Austin's had 99k I think, and you are right, I forgot yours was a 2000.

Black on black, nice! I'm sure there's a bit of a difference, but I looked at an 02 DTS when I was seeking a newer Caddy. It was loaded, had the night vision and all. I eventually went with an 03 STS.

Your ETC was a beautiful car, too bad it was a money pit.

I bought my ETC with 97,919 if I remember correctly. When I got home from the store earlier it's sitting at 139,662. The DTS is gorgeous Mike. And I agree completely with the contrast of the wood against the black interior. I'm still kinda sad to see Kathy's (almost) twin gone.

Nice one Mike! Hows she drive compared to that ETC?

I loved the color combination on yours and Austin's ETC's, but I'd be afraid to buy one, after hearing all sorts of weird stories about those Eldos.

THX!

Acceleration feels pretty much the same. Much better than that DTS rental I had at the meet (which there had to be something wrong with, or detuned by Hertz).

The sound insulation is better, however, so I don't get as much of the N* Siren Song...

I'm sure the struts in my ETC, being 11 years old, were not in optimal condition...however the ETC still handled well. You can tell the DTS is a larger car, obviously, but there is less bounce and body roll with it than the ETC. It is more direct and stable, yet the ride is incomparably smooth. I'll have to try it on a trip from Bentonville to Eureka Springs, which is a mountain 2-lane to see how it really compares.

As to your last line, until you're fat of wallet, I'd recommend you focus your attention elsewhere. I will, however, have to look at the dealer's website to see what astronomical price they put it up for....just like looking at a train wreck about to happen...

Considering the struts alone for the ETC cost near to $4K, I can't blame you for not replacing them. I thought I'd do a little maintenance on mine, and when I saw the price, I decided it just wasn't happening.

Your new DTS looks incredible. Black may be a royal bitch to keep clean, but it makes these cars look awesome. Not a huge fan of black interiors, but the inlaid wood trim is divine. I think you'll really enjoy the DTS. It's a seriously underappreciated car.

All that for a weekend in which you'd spend most of the time on the road? I took less for a week in Hawaii, and that's including my golf clubs.

You weren't kidding when you said the wood really pops against the black interior. It's gorgeous.

I think these are seriously underrated cars. Great balance in the ride and drive and an absolute top-notch long-distance highway car. Hope it gives you years of reliable service.

Thanks all -- it's been a blast. The second 10 hours on the road were much better than the first 10.

@Chad: The snow never really materialized. It just kind of spit a little every once in a while. I was concerned before going up, but lucked out.

@V-Eight: I'm not sure on the headliner in the Escalade Platinum...

@77CDV: I'm not either, when they're not really black, but charcoal. This is BLACK...and it really makes the light wood pop. Normally, I'm a camel guy, but it wouldn't look nearly this good in this instance.

@Jim: :umno:

@Gary: That was before the box of crap that I had to get out of the ETC...luckily the ETS' trunk is huge...
