Not sure how this ended up on a technology blog, but thought it was cool enough to pass along, and a quick browse. Obama's car is a COMMERCIAL truck with a Cadillac body conversion and Escalade headlights, insane!

Dude, GTFO with your Rush Limbaugh conspiracy theory bullshit. I am not an Obama nutswinger, but the man is honestly trying to make the best of a very bad hand of cards that has been dealt to him.

Anyways, I really don't want to turn this thread into a political debate. The presidential limo site is really cool, and the cars that have served our Commander in Chief have always held a special place in my heart. If I had the $$$$, I would totally own this right here:

The Clinton-era Fleetwood is my favorite presidential limo. Such an awesome car. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

But I'd be sure to get that interior detailed to the hilt.

Pup, your point about him spending money on the limo isn't really a good argument since the Secret Service makes these decisions... I doubt very much that Obama was involved in the decision making process much if at all.

I'm sure the president has bigger fish to fry, I'm sure he doesn't get involved with ordering his limo,he has peeps for that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the order for the presidential limo had been placed and paid for before Obama was even elected. Secret Service likes to plan ahead, as would be expected.

And (I'm pretty sure) even Rush Limbaugh doesn't buy the birther conspiracy.

fw limo!!! I think 12000 lbs is a conservative estimate on that one. the glass is 3 inches thick on that thing. If I had to pick a presidential limo from the last 50 years, it would be clintons. IMO reagans and bushs looked disproportionate in the roof (too tall, and obamas- well that thing is a monster truck with caddy parts on it- its cool, but it doesnt look like a car.

btw, someone needs to stop drinking the limbaugh koolaid.

My experience with American Presidential limousines is like most people limited to those they have seen in museums or in a motorcade on its' way somewhere. But I have actually ridden in a presidential limousine, albeit one from before the days of hyper armor and bullet proof glass!

When I was 13 years old and my family was about to return to the U.S. from Brazil we were staying at the Hotel Jaragua, then the finest hot in Sao Paulo. As luck would have the president of Portugal was making his first trip to Brazil, a former Portuguese colony. Actually it was the first time any president of Portugal had visited Brazil and it was a major occasion for the government and people of that country.

It was early on a Sunday evening and I had to get to church for a youth club meeting, but because the part of the President's entourage was staying at the Jaragua getting a taxi was almost impossible. Senhor Joao, the doorman had become somewhat of a friend of mine, hailing cabs for me to get to school each morning and taking care of my family's transportation needs ( we had also stayed at the the hotel for two months when we came to Sao Paulo two years before). Knowing my predicament Sr. Joao walked over to the President's limousine, which was parked in front of the hotel and talked to the limo's driver and then motioned for me to join them. It turned out that the limo had to go to Avenida Paulista to pick up the President and since my church was on the way he could drop me there. And so opened the door for me to climb in the rear compartment. So began my one, and only ride in a presidential limousine.

The car was a 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan limousine like the one presidents Truman and Eisenhower had used when they were in the White House, except this one wasn't a four door convertible but was fully enclosed (I don't know why they chose to show that blue Cosmo convertible in the article on presidential limousines above; there are plenty of photos of the "Bubbletop" presidential Lincoln in archive). I had no noticed while standing there that the limousine had a Portuguese flag and the President's pennant on the front fenders. But to my great surprise, when we pulled out to go we were accompanied by four motorcycle escorts who shortly turned on their sirens as off we went. Some of my friends might have been embarrassed by the commotion .... but not me! I just made believe it was just for me. When we got to the church some of the kids were standing out front with the minister, their jaws really dropped when the chauffeur open the door and I got out!

I have ridden in several limousines since that time, but never another presidential on with the flags flying! Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

I do have a picture of one of President Bush's Cadillac limos sitting in front of a C-130 that had delivered it, with my son and a friend who were acting as advance people for the President standing in front of it. But he never got to ride in it!

On rare occasions, Cars of State wind up on the sale block. While the Cadillac Brougham is cool, If I ever "could", I'd want SS-100X and not because of anything other than the 60s Lincolns just look so darn GOOD.

It probably has nothing to do with policy, but just coincidence, but it seems that Cadillacs are purchased for presidential use under Republican regimes and Lincolns under Democratic ones.

Not necessarily. Nixon had two Lincolns, a 69 and a 72. Ford had the 72 and a 75. Carter had those and a 76 cadillac. Bush I had a 89 Town Car, Clinton had the Brougham...

I wish they made a civilian version of Obama's beast, that wasn't a limo. Can you imagine a 3/4 ton truck turned into a tall passenger car. That would make the B-Body FWB go cower in the corner...

Really? I find that thing so very unattractive. I didn't much care for W's rides either.

Bush 1 and 2 got some pretty ugly limos. Bush 1 got a Lincoln Town Car and Bush 2 got a Deville and a DTS. The DTS was pretty ugly.

My favorites are Clinton's Fleetwood and Kennedy's Continental.

If only reagans fwb had meaty C pillars like the production sedan, it would have been a super cool car, but IMO the lack of C pillars on the limos looks so wrong.
btw, anyone know what was under the hood of reagans limo? all I've seen in the specs from the 80's was the 140 hp 307 olds, but it had to have more than that. I cant imagine 140hp moving a super armored limo anywhere.

I'd guess Regan's Caddy had either a big block Chevy or big block Cadillac 500 under the hood, built with no consideration for emissions or gas mileage. Most definetly mated to a Turbo400 trans and a beefy 12 or 14 bolt truck rear end.

DouglasJRizzo

Pres Reagan's 83 Cad was all Cad powered from what I was told. GM dug up a crate 500 motor that had been lying around, modified it and installed it behind a THM 400 trans. When the car was donated to the Reagan library and museum, I was somewhat acquainted with a guy at the company who had the job to clean it up after the Secret Service removed the highly classified communications gear. He had said the engine wasn't too wild, as it had to idle smoothly, but there was enough punch to make it known that it wasn't a standard 368 Cad (which is what it would've had being a 83 Limousine at the start of its life) or 307 Olds motor.

BTW, the guy I knew at the time (haven't spoken to him in years) told me the company got the car after the Secret Service went through it. The interior was a mess. No one said what was in it, specifically, there were minimal details given, it more or less showed at their bay door.
