Ok some people may make fun of me but I put a good size magnet at then end of my filter and on the bottom of my oil pan.
Its a safeguard for me...you know..." in case sh*t happens" :)

that is a good idea I've seen done other places too. most tranny pans have a magnet in them and many new vehicles have a magnet built into the drain plug and there is also the Mag-Hytec ($$$) rear end cover.

they are good cheap insurance

I take it the magnet is used to trap the metal particles. I have never heard that one, but it sounds reasonable.
