This is pretty strange... I bought a very nice used emblem for the hood of my '70 DeVille. The one that was on there was mildly damaged, and I wanted a nicer one. I found one and purchased it, it seems to be the same as all the other '70 emblems that I've seen for sale. I got it and cleaned it up, and when I removed the original one, I found that it was quite a bit bigger than the new one. I compared the new one to the one that's on my '70 Calais, and it matches. The one that's on the DeVille seems to be an oddball. The one that seems to be correct is approximately 2 1/4" wide at the widest point, and the oddball that was on the car is approximately 3 1/4" at it's widest. Is this another example of a late-build? The DeVille was built in April, the Calais in December. Any thoughts? I'd really like to find a nice large one to replace the one I have, it caused mild indentations in the paint, I'd hate to put a smaller one on that would reveal the outline of the larger one...

Are you sure it was for your year? Some of the 60's cars had a smaller v'ed back hood ornament.
Also you might have purchased a Fleetwood Brougham emblem. I'm not positive, but I believe the de Ville had a larger hood ornament than the Fleetwood. Unlike the Fleetwood, on the de Ville it was meant to be the only emblem there.

I own two 1970 Cadillacs, a DeVille and a Calais. The emblem I purchased was listed as a 1970, it matches every other 1970 emblem listed, and it matches the emblem on the Calais. I'm trying to figure out why the DeVille has a different emblem, and what this emblem might be, so I can find and purchase a similar one.

You can ask the seller what the dimensions are...

You may be right, they all look the same to me, but dimensions would help. So I guess that means that the Fleetwood one you mentioned as being smaller was the same one that was used on the Calais... Sure confused the hell out of me. :bonkers:

that's weird...but good info to have! I always assumed that any logo off the same year would fit...doh.

I believe thosemblems vary to model name too .
If you look at 1980-84 RWD Fleetwoods you can see wreath and crest
1980-84 Devilles came with V and crest unlike Fleetwoods
This is odd. For 1970 and 1971, the Calais and DeVilles have only the crest on the hood and trunk, larger than what is found in 1969 or 1972. There should be no difference in size between the Calais and DeVille emblems. The Fleetwood crest in 1970 and 1971 will be smaller as it retains the wreath as well for hood and trunk. Your speculation on the effect of build date is an interesting one. It was not uncommon for GM to use up previous year parts before switching over to new ones, or to use new ones in the previous year if older parts ran out too quickly. Since the 1969 Calais and DeVille had the V as well as the crest for hood and trunk, their crests would be smaller that what would have been normal for their 1970/1971 counterparts. I'd measure the hood crest on my 69 Fleetwood for you, but I'd have to figure out where the body shop stashed it. :(
