Hello. i have a 1997 Eldorado and the idler pulley bolt has snapped off in the engine block. i was wondering if anyone experienced this and has any advise for a solution. can the idler pulley be bypassed completely with a different sized belt?? if so does anyone have the correct size? if not then do you have any idea what a dealer would charge to fix the problem. Thanks for any feedback.

Unfortunately the idler is there to insure adequate belt wrap for the alternator and A/C pulleys to reduce slip under load. It is a necessary item - very necessary.

The labor to drill and EZ-out the broken bolt will be about an hour - and a decent local shop can do the job.

(If the engine is a Northstar) - The scary part is that you're working with a ferrous bolt broken off in an aluminum block - if the work to remove the bolt results in damaged block threads, then the shop will have to helicoil the bolt hole, doubling the shop labor. It can all be done, but it's minor, technical surgery.

Correct - and it's in a hard to drill, hard to access place - you may wind up lowering the cradle a few inches to access this from inside the wheel well.

Break's over, back to drilling/tapping-
