I knew they made V12s and V16 pre-WWII but who would've thought they may have been planning a comeback?

Would have been awesome if they got off their concept planning asses and actually made the car...

Here are some concepts they had for a V-16 in '63.

The V16 based off the LS1 was sweet, too...

I have read that the 500 would have been expanded forward to a monster displacement V12 rather than backward to the 425 had the energy crisis not intervened.

They also have an article on a V12 Caprice!

The V12 Caprice uses a 7 series BMW engine. GM built it just to see if it would fit, and test performance.

That's amazing. I love reading the articles about those cool "one-off" GM concept cars from the skunkworks.

The car concept photos are of a group of way out concepts that Chuck Jordan and Wayne Kady did as "what if's". The idea was a very indulgent personal car powered by a V12 or V16, unfortunately it was not a production intent project. However, some of the styling themes developed in these concepts were used on the 1967 Eldorado and there was a serious effort to develop the V12 and it came "this close" to production. By the way, the 500 we know and love was apparently designed to be capable of being expanded to 600 cubic inches if needed.

The book with the complete story is "American Classics: Cadillac Eldorado" by James and Jeanna Howell. It has a lot of interviews with the designers.

how do you get 600 ci out of a 500 ci motor? thats crazy

Bore and stroke. Not that crazy when you think about how big the bore already is in the 500. Pistons the size of coffee cans! A little overbore brings a LOT of cubes.

The article about this car says it is "sadly not with us" anymore - did I miss something or what happened to it? The crusher? Cool concept putting the V12 into that Caprice, they should have put it in an HT4100 era Cadillac which could have really used it. :)

RR put the BMW V12 in the 99-02 Silver Seraph and it was a great engine for that car. :)

Ok, let's do it! The official Cadillac Forums engine swap. We need an 80s Fleet, and a BMW 12 cyl. Whose garage are we meeting at? The funny thing is, we could probably do this for under 3k.

Back in the Dark Ages there were several full-size Oldsmobile car swaps with either Allison or Rolls Royce V-12 aircraft engines. Back in the late 50's a buddy up the street had a mint 19?? Lincoln Zephyr with a V-12 flathead - it had 4 cylinder heads !

2 ways to get power from a V-12: Like Ferrari, build a 3 liter (188 c.i.) and wind it to 9,500 redline, or build it huge with a 4,500-5,000 redline (BUT enough low rpm torque to move a barn). The longer the crank throw, rod weight, and piston weight, the lower the redline rpm. The 20-piston Fairbanks engines in diesel submarines (or railroad A/B engine units) produced 1680 hp and were redlined at 550 rpm. Yep, 550.
