View Full Version : On the wagon...

I'm back on the wagon again, I wouldn't mind getting a mid 90's
to late 90''s volvo station wagon, 740, 850, they seem to have had the inline 5 cylinder engine for many years, is this a good bet ?, most of them are around
120,000 plus miles, safe ?.

Yeah, they have the 20V I-5. You can get a couple different turbo version. If you wind up with a 850 T5R Wagon, I will hate you.

The 740/960 range is RWD, the 740 is the old body style, way boxier than the newer but still boxy 960. The mechanicals are similar. I think they used inline fours in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated forms.

The 850 is FWD and uses the inline five motor with turbocharged and non turbo variants. Its a bit smaller than the 740/960 range.

If you want old school Volvo, the 240 is classic. RWD, inline four cylinder motors, built like a tank. Its hard to find them in decent shape now, most of them were used and abused by college students who couldn't afford to or really didn't care to maintain them.

Take all that info with a grain of salt, I'm not that knowledgeable about Volvos, but I do appreciate the straightforward and boxy nature of their wagons.

Me too (ours is a lowly Dodge though ;) ).

Did you catch this week's Top Gear US? There was some Buick Roadmaster estate/wagon pr0n in there.

Yeah, I heard about it but I haven't caught any episodes. I don't like Top Gear honestly. :hide:

I get my wagon fix here: http://gmlongroof.4umer.com/forum.htm :)
