: I went to the junkyard to get some switches...

And I walked out with a complete set of wire wheels!

Here's one of them after a little cleaning:

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o4/Mudpics/1986%20Brougham/IMG_2942.jpg

The people at the cashier passed them off as "Rally wheels". $12 each! What a steal!

Here's some shots of the car they came off, look how dirty they were before!

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o4/Mudpics/Wreckers%202010/IMG_2926.jpg

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o4/Mudpics/Wreckers%202010/IMG_2928.jpg

They aren't in perfect condition, however. There's some brown crap around the edges and on the center piece, which looks like rust, but can be cleaned off with an SOS pad. Underneath the chrome still looks great.
From what I understand this is quite common with these wheels. Is there a relatively easy way to clean them up, aside from having them re-chromed? I was thinking of having the tires taken off (they're not very good anyway) and letting the wheel sit in a tub of CLR. It should just dissolve the rust without me having to spend a week scrubbing with an SOS pad.
Any other ideas?

Also, there's a whole bunch of RWD broughams at my local junkyard. These wheels came off an '85, and there was a 90 with 2 wire wheels, but they were rusty. There was also an '83 and '87 brougham, as well as an '80 Fleetwood coupe, and a mid 70's Eldorado (didn't check the exact year).

I can post pics of them if anyone wants.

Go to your local pep boys/autozone or whatever they call it in Canada and get some "Eagle One Chrome and Wire cleaner". Its right by all the soap and waxes.

Just spray it on, but don't let it sit for more than a couple of minutes, and wash it off. Its amazing stuff, I don't even use a brush on my wheels and it works wonders(of course I clean them every week). I'm sure you'll have to get in there with a toothbrush and scrub away.

Also, very fine steel wool soaked in water will work wonders on the rust. I'd get a set of tires mounted and balanced on there before you do anything, make sure they aren't out of round. The spokes have a habit of coming loose or bending if the car sat in one spot for years on end, making the wheels impossible to balance. Then that would require a full restortation of the wheels, something best left to a professional and costs a lot of $$$$$.

EDIT: Just make sure that you only use that wheel cleaner on chrome plated wheels. It'll ruin a set of painted aluminum wheels on contact.

That's a good point. I'll have them test for balance when they remove the tires. If they turn out to be junk, anyone want to buy the center caps?

Your right! You stole 'em! Mount them on a free hub and spin them. Watch for wobble or distortion to ensure they are true. If they aren't and you don't want to pay to straighhten them, you can always sell them to someone who will for more than you paid for them. I had the address of this place that straightens wheels on my other computer.

Couple things:

1. Great deal! As it was said, you stole 'em. They seem to be cleaning up well, too. Not much pitting! I bought my set for $60.00, and they came with 4 new tires mounted. I was pretty pleased, as I bet you are now!

2. If you're in Canada, they don't sell the Eagle 1 Wire wheel cleaner or anything comparable up here. Believe me, I looked into it and even wrote the company. It's because of the acidity of the product, and laws and regulations in this country. Apparently some people in Ontario buy it in the US and frequently bring it back here.

3. Why don't we have any pull-a-part yards here?! There aren't even any that will let you walk on the property, so it's impossible to know what they've got. And not only are all the old cars rusted so bad that the parts are unusable, they crush anything older than 1995 in these parts. Ugh!

3. I used an SOS pad on mine, and it worked awesome... except for the pitted parts where the chrome was gone, obviously. Also, on the parts I couldn't get to, where I had to use a toothbrush. The tub o' CLR is a good idea though...

4. PLEASE POST THE OTHER CADDY PICS! I wanna see them, especially the '80 FWB COUPE!

Is there anyway you can grab a center cap off one of those wire wheels in the junk yard? I am in desperate need of only one. I have the same set you just picked up. And Congrats on the awesome steal LOL. I used naval jelly on the rusty spots and the parts on the spokes and worked wonders I just have to finish one.more.tire. Notice it also has 2 wire wheels, but they aren't in as good shape. I can still get them if someone wants though. Also it only had one good center cap, and I took it (my set was missing one).

There was also an '87 Brougham, mostly complete, but extremely rusty. There was literally nothing left of the bottom half of the rear end, and the body only had about 30% of it's paint left. The rest was giant rust spots. Lots of good interior parts from that one though.

If anyone wants anything, I'll be going back next Saturday (most of them should still be there). I'd be glad to get any parts anyone wants, as I hate to see this stuff go to waste. I'll keep an eye out for a good taillight.

Also, I've emptied my PM box.

There's a brown '83 FWB in there with a dark brown fabric interior and what appears to be a leather wrapped steering wheel. If it is in good shape, I'd like to have it. If the company sells wires for $12.00 per they will most likely pay you to take the steering wheel away. Please let me know and try to get a couple of pix of the steering wheel. Come to think of it, if the turn signal arm is in good condition, I would take the entire column, wheel and all. I'm not all that far away from that yard. It might make a fun spring weekend trip.

Yeah, that was a leather wheel. The interior of that car was untouched so I imagine the wheel was in good shape. You're welcome to get it yourself, but the car probably won't be there in the spring. I could get it and hold onto it for you, or just ship it.

Also, I'm actually going there next wednesday instead, so if anyone else wants anything let me know before then!

Is there any chance you could also get me the plastic piece in the dashboard with the hole cut around it for the swivel-stick that controls the passenger mirror? I don't need the actual woodgrain trim or the stick, just the plastic piece that goes around it. If not, no worries. I did. You mean the part that says "Body by Fleetwood" on it? Also I assume that piece would be longer on the coupe. Looking at the picture, the driver's side one is missing from that '80 coupe. Hopefully it's still there on the passenger side.

Also any tips on how to easily remove the body fillers? Any special tools I might need?

Yes, the stainless part that holds down the edge of the carpet. I have two, it is just one is dented from the old guy slamming the seat belt in the door.

Fillers if they are crack free and flexible. Hers are still there, but one rear is getting crumbly, while one front has a crack. She needs the filler between the bumper and the license plate, too (but I think you need to take off a bumper for that, so don't worry unless someone wants a bumper).

Can someone post a how-to on taking the fillers off a car?

If the front turn signal lenses are perfect/crack free on that 80, grab them too.

@ mudant. my interior is beige or cream colored (not sure of factory's name for color) Any color will do (I can paint it) I just need the plastic chrome piece to be intact (if the vents are missing or busted, thats ok- I have an extra set)
heres a pic of my dash for color reference.
http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae356/jetthreatkevin/cadillac/th_P1010161.jpg (http://s987.photobucket.com/albums/ae356/jetthreatkevin/cadillac/?action=view&current=P1010161.jpg)

also, if it still has the wood grained radio knobs, I would like those as well (wishful thinking here). also, I need 1 intact tail lens. all the ones I've found locally were smashed for the emblems :banghead:

I am also looking for 2 hubcaps for an 86 brougham (see thumbnail with pic of fender) I have had problems with finding the correct style. I've bought 2 different types of wire baskets thinking they were the same as mine only to realize they are the wrong ones (1 had removable centers and more spokes, 1 had red center caps and didnt look right)

with regards to fillers

front fillers are somewhat easy. I just felt around for all the screws
(I'm going off of memory- I'll look at my trim and filler brackets tomorrow and post pics of them for fastener reference.)
first, remove the chrome rocker molding off the front of the fenders. If I recall correctly, there are 3 screws that hold the chrome trim onto the bottom of the filler piece. there is a screw that holds it onto the filler panel in the lower front corner. you will also need to take off at least half the screws on the wheel well chrome so you can remove the chrome rocker piece (there is a lip that tucks in behind the wheel chrome)
as for the actual piece, the bracket that holds the fillers in is a L- shaped bracket that sandwiches the filler in between itself and the fender at the top and side. there are 3 nuts on the side and 4 on top I believe. (like I said, I need to find my brackets and trim and look at them) that way I'll be able to show you where all the mounting points are
not sure if this pic helps (click for full size). it shoes the screws along the side, and there are a few (3?) along the bottom. that hold the chrome piece in place I misspoke earlier. there are none on the top.
http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/ae356/jetthreatkevin/cadillac/th_P6270757.jpg (http://s987.photobucket.com/albums/ae356/jetthreatkevin/cadillac/?action=view&current=P6270757.jpg)

as for the rear fillers, I believe the only way to get to them without damaging them is to remove the rear bumper. I wish there was an easier way, but I have not found one yet. they are held on with a large V shaped bracket. there is 1 nut on each bracket that you must access from the trunk.

MudAnt... I wax the wheels with a liquid car wax...I got some that comes in a spray bottle... I spray it on and brush it all around with a small tooth brush type brush..after it drys I buff it off with a towel and another soft small brush to get all the cracks and hard spots... after you get the wax on don't use any harsh cleaners until you ready to put on another coat of wax....

Can someone post a how-to on taking the fillers off a car?

Easiest way is to go under the car and remove the (2) bolts that hold the impact absorbers from the frame and the bolts at the the end of the frame tube. Then you can pull the bumper back enough for clearance. You can leave it suspended on the absorbers or disconnect the leads to the lights and the fibre optic leads and pull it off. It weighs about 140#.

They go for about $80 a set online so yeah it would be worth it to grab them. If you wanted them gone immediately you could probably blow them out at $50 a set and still make a nice profit. There's actually a decent amount of good parts on all those cars if you wanted to put in the time. All the wood trim, door panels, dash, and digital cluster on the interior of the 90, along with the front end, taillights, and the impact strips. The Fleetwood coupes door panels and all the 2 door specific trim, like rocker panels, the chrome that goes around the soft top, the opera lights, thresholds, and the chrome around the doors and so on are worth money too. That's just off the top of my head, but there is plenty more on those cars worth stripping.

also, if they're in good shape and pliable- front fender fillers. I would prefer a set in a lighter color, but any color will do.
also, are there differences between the 80-89 and 90-92 rear fillers? size, what they're made of, etc.

I believe the rear ones have holes in them for the new trim on the 90-92s, so you can't really use them on 80-89s.

Also, here's their price list if anyone wants to look anything up:

No problem, I might have to use a big box to get the bumper filler in without folding it though, unless the part under the headlights is separate from the part behind the bumper..

how hard is it to get the ones that go under the headlights? mine are busted to pieces , but I've never removed them because I dont know how to get them out.

also, mudant if they're not hard to get to, I need a set of those under headlight fillers too. if they're hard to get to, dont worry about it.

front fillers are riveted to the headerpanel on a metal brace, you would have to drill them out and when installing the them on your car you can rivet them again or screw them on like I did.
Rear fillers....are best removed if you just remove the outer ends. I just did so on mine last Wednesday. Had I known about this (people wanting a how-to) I would of taken pics.
Remove trim bezel
remove taillight
disconnect harness and fiber optic
on my 80 it has a support plate that is seperate from the outer end, later bumper ends has this piece welded to the outer out end.
So if yours is a later year, other than 80, it'll have two bolts securing it to the bumper and one behind it towards the bottom. On my 80 it has 4 bolts; 2 that you'll see once lens is removed and the other 2 are the ones going through bumper and the bottom one that bolts to the bumper through the backside.
Remove outer end.
There'll be, I think, 5 bolts to the side and one on the inner part. If removing DS it'll be on right side of filler if PS it'll be on the left side of filler
1 final bolt through the trunk

[QUOTE]=brougham_geezer;2438825]If think if this was a d'Elegance it would say "Fleetwood Brougham" there, but since it's not I belive it says that on the C-pillar... so what the heck was there?

actually it never said anything there, I had one of these Brougham Coupes and it was the same year but a d'Elegance. On the sail panel/C-pillar it read Brougham d'Elegance and if it wasn't a "d'Elegance" it would have just read "Fleetwood Brougham" and actually it had "Fleetwood" emblems on the front fenders below the fender spears and under that emblem had another and it read "Diesel" if it was equipped with a Diesel engine.
I have an actual dealer photograph taken of an 80 Brougham Coupe that came in a Merchandising Catalog book I got on eBay, I'll see if I can scan it and post here ☺

yeah those, I just called them like that. Those are a little tight to remove, if you use to much force you'll actually "kink" the edges. With a flat thin screwdriver should do it.

just to clarify, the center dash piece I need is for an '87.

I'll also take a set of rear filler panels as they're in good shape (no cracks or breaks etc. ).
just wondering, is it common for older caddies up there to have good filler panels? around here, most filler panels fall apart after 15-20 years.

I need the "chime" and the plastic "license plate fillers" on any '80-'84 brougham or deville.

What I find most interesting about this thread is that there are actually salvage yards left in North America where you can pull your own stuff. Here in NJ, you can't get near a car in a junkyard anymore due to "liability" reasons. You have to put in your request and pick the part up in a day or two. That means that you'd better not ask for anything that costs less than a few hundred bucks. They'll laugh you right out of the place if you want a small piece of trim or random mechanical part.

We have a local pick a part yard now, I haven't gone down there to look, but probably find stuff.

St. Louis has 2 great yards, Speedway (across from Gateway International Raceway) and Taylors (6000 block of St. Charles Rock Rd). I highly recommend going to them. Speedway is one BIG yard, and sorted by make even. Prices are good, are both owned by same person (as of 80's) and pick a part. Found a Pontiac 370 in there, and and Olds 371! Even a 76 Olds 98 with FACTORY AIRBAGS.

Mud.... the seatbelt chime is in the dash to the left of the radio. It is mounted in a tin bracket and has a two wire harness plugged into it, yellow/black if memory serves. I'd like to have the one out of the brown 83 car that the steering wheel and centre dash are coming out of. You will probably find it easier to pull with the r/h mirror switch and the climate control removed. There was a request in your list for c/control for an 85 and that 83 would be identical to an 85. The chime should be easily tested by clipping the harness connected to it and when it is all removed, strip the harness wires back and sticking them on a live battery. Ding,ding.........etc.

Cheers......R.

Also, most of the fasteners holding all that dash stuff in place have 9/32 heads on them. While you are messing around in those dashboards I would suggest that you get all the windshield wiper switches that you can find. Low ball them and take the lot. The w/s wiper switches in those years were enormously troublesome. My car had only 20000 original miles on it when I got it, had never been driven in the rain yet the w/s wiper switch was either bagged or defective from day one.

Once I first went to speedway salvage, decided to not go anywhere else again. dont have a reason to go anywhere else. I've been to a few yards, and while speedway is a bit more in price (maybe $5 or $10 more for large body panels), you have a very very good chance at finding what you need in good shape (moreso body panels than interior pieces- most interiors are quickly picked over) I've found quite a few trim pieces, as well as the stereo system for my caddy there (and a couple sets of old hubcaps for my wall)

Forget the chime dude.I don`t think they are compatible anyway.
The license plate filler piece is really a rather large piece. It attaches at the outer base trunk area just before the rear bumper and fills in the gaps around and in front of the rear license plate. There may be cosmetic differences between model years. This piece is actually needed for a '78 Deville----but the same piece may have been used on later model years.

I'm no good at clipping quotes and posting them but I must say that who cares what a good switch goes for on eBay. The only way one can determine if a switch is good is to install it and run it. I just collect and keep stuff that I will be likely to need because my 83 FWB is the very last car that I will ever drive. $10.25 seems reasonable since GM probably priced the switches in the $60 range and has discontinued them.
Another item from that 83 car that escaped me is the trunk weather strip. In your photo, it looks to be in mint condition. No tears, rips or other damage. If so, I'd like to have that also. It will take some time to get it pried loose without tearing it. Mine is pretty good but that one looks better from what I can see.
So...... when will you be able to tell me what I owe you so that I can get some money to you?? I await news of my parts with bated breath.

Mud...... If Pomposte doesn't want the chime from the 83, I'll take it for my son's 81. They are interchangeable. Mine (83) still works well, his (81) gave up a few years ago and the chimes from various wreckers and parts cars have also not worked. I'd doubt that your yard will want more than $5 for an unproven chime so I'd be prepared to take a chance on the 83's chime as working. This last estimate is based on the fact that your yard asks only $12 for used Caddy wire wheels.
Cheers..........R.

I was wondering what they normally go for to see if it's worth taking the switch out of every Brougham on the lot.

Also, I have a huge list of parts at this point, so I doubt I'll be able to get them all in one day. I will go back as soon as I can, but I'll probably have to get the parts in the order that they were posted. It's the only fair way to give priority.

can you add as well, if they have them or not, but I need one trunk reflector that some late or early 80s Broughams had on the trunk right above the chrome edge molding. Thanks
Also cancel the front fender side moldings, I have a complete set off a 77 coupe that I'm going to use instead once I get my car painted. Think these will look nicer since it doesnt have insert trim in them like the others I have seen/
Much appreciated

jayoldschool:

* front, rear and licence plate fillers (80-89)
* door sill from coupe
* Driverís side lock switch block bezel (good condition only)
* Front left armrest, mid 80s light blue

You can remove the door sills from my list. I just found an 83 Coupe DeVille in the U Pull It here in Florida (I'm on vacation). Got lots of goodies off it. If anyone wants anything, PM me.

Mud, can you add to my list: 80-89 instrument cluster? Canadian one, of course. My odometer is wacky...

Ps.. If you need more discussion, e-mail me at richard-whelan@shaw.ca

This is from "pompste".You can have the chime for your son`s '81 dude. The '83 chime is not compatible with my '78 anyway.

Unfortunately I didn't, I had a bunch of christmas shopping and things to do. I'll either be going today or tomorrow. Probably tomorrow though, because today I'm taking my wire wheels to the tire shop to see if they're warped and to have the old tires removed.

According to the website, the 83, 85 and 90 are still there, but the 80 and the 87 seem to be gone. They've both been gone from the website for quite a while though, long before I could have gotten over there.

hopefully not. I tried that link you posted and when I searched I came out empty handed. Didn't find nothing pertaining to my search of vehicle or the others.
Good luck with your wires! Let's keep our fingers crossed for that 80 to be there.☺
