MAF sensor from my understanding does very little at startup idle. The breather system controls running at cold start. If your breather system is not clean you could have such issues. There are posts on how to clean the breather system.

You can also clean the MAF as I did mine. If you take the module out use no residue electronic cleaner. I don't thinks it is recommended but I also used cotton swabs with rubbing alcohol to clean the whole assembly. I believe the MAF in 99-01 does dual functions of providing inputs on Air flow as well as air temperature. So clean thoroughly and the breather system and I believe it should help.

Looks to me like you've isolated the MAF as the issue. I think the cleaning recommendation above is good. Otherwise try to borrow a known good one to test before you buy a new one. MAFs are usually expensive although I haven't checked for this car.

check autozone or a parts store.. look for a 03 saturn l-300 3.0 v6 mass air flow sensor. they are the exact same part as the cateras maf. you will save a lotta money though!!

I believe the following is what you may be looking for,

I would try cleaning it too as I suggested earlier. It is not too difficult but needs to be done with care.

Good luck.

call auto zone or parts america. take your maf in with you to compare... but I know for a fact I read a post that says the 3.0 saturn l series is the exact same MAF. it was like 58 or 78$$ for that price why not get a new one if cleaning your old one does not work..?

The eBay listings I found for you are for the 97-98 I believe. Beyond 97-98 the MAF included the air temperature sensor in it. The Autozone price is $349.99 without the Core and reduced by $45 if you give them the old one.

If you looking for 99 up then Autozone has it for $229.99 with noe core adjustment and the following for eBay,

http://desc.shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=90528435&_sacat=10404&_sop=1&Model%252F%2520Series=Omega&_dmpt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&_odkw=omega%20x30xe%20air%20flow&_osacat=10404&bkBtn=&LH_TitleDesc=1&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCHX:SRCH

The eBay prices are way better.

Cheers.

Do you have a mechanic you trust? If so, you'll find it is not that expensive! I had a new one (I have proof it was new) installed for $145.00.
