My reverse gate it weird. It sometimes just won't close before I shift to 5th, and thus when I go to make my move into 5th, I almost go into R! I always catch it before I grind anything, but it's really annoying, as I have to sit there for a couple seconds trying to find 5th, then blip and put it in gear.
Is this a common problem? How can it be addressed? Like what are the parameters where the reverse gate is closed, allowing you to easily go to 5th and 6th, blocking reverse, and are there any ways to make sure it is closed before I get to 5th. It happens most often when I use the 1>4 Skip shift.
I'm sorry, but the car should know that I have no business going into reverse at speed.
i had the same problem the other night, and i was just operating under the assumption that it might be time for a new clutch.. so i am definitely interested in hearing if anyone else has had this problem and found a resolution for it...
There is a reverse lockout solenoid on the transmission that engages a ball bearing into a groove, thereby stopping you from being able to go past the 'gate' when moving. You can overpower it, but from your description I don't think you overpowered it. This solenoid is probably going bad on your cars.
FYI - If you keep going past the gate when trying for 5th, you might end up having to rebuild your trans because reverse will start spinning and weld onto the shaft. It happened to me.
Not sure if this is your problem, but hopefully it helps a little...
I had the exact problem recently and finally got it fixed over the Thanksgiving holiday. I would have to shift back to 4th, give it some gas, then it seemed to shift to 5th fine. Finally, it began to do it more often and I noticed that my cruise control would not activate and that occasionally my revs would rise after I shifted... long story longer... it ended up being that my clutch position sensor had gone bad.
When you notice it happening, see if your cruise control will activate while you are in 4th over 30 mph, that might help to tell you if your CPS is on the fritz (seems to be fairly common problem). Sorry I don't know the code to look for if you scan it, somebody else might though.
CPS is a weird problem. For example, I had no cruise control, got the CPS code, and replaced the CPS. Cruise control never came back, 30 days later I got the code again. A frustrating problem.
So is there no solution for this? It's really irking when I go to shift to 5th and I end up in the reverse gate... Does the solenoid need to be replaced?
The reverse lockout solenoid is supposed to "lock out" the reverse gate whenever the vehicle speed, as measured by the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) exceeds 3 mph. If the VSS is defective you should be getting error codes since the VSS affect several aspects of the ECM's operation. The reverse solenoid has an MRSP of about $200 and should be available for no more than $150 from some suppliers (e.g. Luke at Lindsay). If you are consistently (or even occsaionally for that matter) finding the reverse gate open at speeds over 3 mph, you might consider replacing the solenoid since the cost is not substanially different than a typical diagnosis at a dealer.
It's pretty frequent. VERY frequent actually. At least twice daily, and at speeds of about 35-40mph... I haven't checked the port for any codes, but none have been thrown to the radio that I have seen...
The codes related to the VSS (e.g. P0500) will give a Check Engine Light (CEL). If you don't have one, and your reverse lockout is not working, you are likely playing Russian roulette with your reverse solenoid, or the related wiring & connectors.
How do I go about getting to it? I'm willing to get in there myself and see what's up. I'm pretty good with electronics and have some experience with industrial electric solenoids.
I notice this issue as well nearly every time I drive the car, but after I put it in 5th or 6th then check the lockout again its activated like it should be. It sounds like I need to take it to the shop, should I expect any hassle against the powertrain only warranty?
I can't say whether your warranty covers it, but the condition certainly puts the powertrain at risk since it will be damaged the first time you find reverse at 55 mph.
Several years ago I experimented with my '05 and discovered above a certain speed, which I can't remember now, the reverse gate is opened. I would go 15 mph and push the clutch in and move the shifter over. I kept increasing the speed by 5 mph until the gate was opened. It never failed, at 0 mph to that speed the gate was always closed, above that speed the gate was always open. At slower speeds the gate was closed but you could over power it, at higher speeds there was no resistance when going into the reverse gate.
I have not experimented with my '07 but I'm sure it works the same.
