View Full Version : Water leak on the DeVille

This has been happening since i got the car, I noticed it when I was installing my 4ch. amp int he car... water is leaking in, and it woudl pool up in the little valley where the parking brake cable goes thru the floor board... but it woudl flood the whole floor pan, which would soak the entire sound deadining materal, go thru the rubber part on that, then go thru the rubber part on the carpet and make the carpet damp... the carpet is actually discolored in the areas where it was wet.

So today I decided to tackle it, as well as a few other odds and end... turns out I had to remove *both* front seats, have all the carpet pulled up and completly take out the front sound proof material.... then I poured 1/2 gallon of water on the windsheild and looked in the car... atfirst i could only see 1 spot.. along some wires bundled up in a plastic case... but i set my camera to record a 30sec. movie while i pour the watter... looking back, it is coming in from 3 different places all in the same area... so it must be coming in, then just following whatever it can until it gets to the floor...

So far, from what I can tell, it is coming in on the bottom left edge of the windsheild... although that is just a guess... I don't know... another guess is a drain plug is clogged or the weather stripping is bad....

So I decided to take the upper part of the dash off (again) becuase I figured it may give me a better vantage point (I also changed all the lights from the once-cool blue, to white again... they fadded and looked bad)

So, with the dash off, I poured the water again... well, what took 1/2gallon before to get a decent amount of water int he car, I now poured 3 gallons of water on the windsheild, int he wiper cowling... everywhere in that area... and nothing!... this pisses me off becuase I know I didn't do anything to fix the leak, and now I can see anything... I had to pack up to go to work, I will spend more time with it tomorrow...

I am not going to go and start ripping apart the main part of the dash.... but the leak has to be somewhere back there... can anyone give me any info at all? anyone familer with this gen. DeVille? know water leaks? anything? I want to get this fixed though...

...the damage isn't as bad as I thought... forsome reason I thought the whole floorboard was rusty... but only the little nut on the parking brake cbale that is in the valley (always wet) is rusty... no big deal... and the sound deadining materal is soaked (had it in the sun drying today... not dry, will do it again tomorrow) the material is also rough, as the rubber part is cracked adn stuff from me trying to bend it while in the car....

Somebody please help me get this fixed :)

pics will be in reply

ok, here are the pics...

1) car torn apart... before the dash was taken out... ugh...this is gonna be a pain to put all back.... under the seats I found $1.37, a recharable AA battery and an Alkaline AA battery, 2 screws, the belt clip for my cell phone, 1 skittle under each seat stuck to the carpet, small pebbles, a bank receipt that isn't mine and a pen.... and I keep my cars very clena, this stuff was hiding...

2) the underside of the sound deadining material... look how big the effected area is... i notice ont he passenger side ther eis a small spot... I think that may have been some water that fell on it as I was trying to get the stuff out... either way, I am not worried about it...

3) driver side floor pan... the water first pools up in the valley for the parking brake cable, but when I was installing the amp (when I first noticed the leak... day after it rained) the whole floor pan was a pool... the wires there are the signal/speaker wires fromt he amp in the trunk (power is on pass. side) and that damn fuse box... the cover dosn't stay on (plstic latch broke) and the little clips that you bend in to let it swing down don't work... the left clip is bent in too far, and therefor the little notch dosn't grab, so it always falls, and i always push it up with my foot, but then it falls again...ugh....

4) picture of the location where the water is coming from.... all these spots lead to the parking brake cable area... then as that little valley fills up, it starts flodding the floorpan... my carpet is actually discolored from the damn water... this sucks...

5) same pic as 4, but as I watched the video more, there are 3 areas (I only saw 1 as I watched it) and I color-codded the amount of water coming in according to what I saw on the video...

I do not want to remove the majority of the dash... that is going to be a pain... but there has to be a way to fix this.... I hate driving the car int he rain (actually I use the Olds in crappy weather) but even just sitting itn he driveway, it still leaks...

Look very closely at the windshield. Do you see any indication of it being replaced, like excess sealant squeezed out anywhere, inside or out?

as far as I know, it is the origanal windshield....

should I get some clear silcone and put it ont he bottom edge of the windsehild and seeif that helps?

Well, today my friend came over, I layed in the car while he poured water on the left bottom edge of the windsheild....

the water was pouring in (literally) from a screw.... it is under the dash, and is one of the screws holding the parking brake assembly on... it is a vertical screw....

so I was trying to see where it would be outside the car... it is right next to the fire wall...

..my first thought was, remove the wiper cowling.... well, I coudln't get the damn wiper off for anything... not only that, but the little nut that holds the plastic on is over-tourqed, adn I coudln't get a socket on it...

...so while looking around, I saw a small area in the cowling (the cross-hatches stuff... to prevent leaves and stuff from going inside) that looked differt... I got my screw driver out and pryed it up... it is a small hinged plastic piece.... right bewlow it are 2 bolts, and there is easy access to the nuts... they were a little loose so I tightened them up.... then I poured water in again... and nothing... even when my friend poured water... nothing.... then I figured I would loosen the nuts up to see if it woudl leak again... so i did (and whatever those nuts hold on became loose) and we did the water.... and nothing....

... I was getting real pissesd... I ended up putting the whole interrior back together (minues the under dash stuff.... want to do some things with the wiring) but I never did find "the" leak, but I know it is coming from under the wiper cowling... either from a bad seal in the windsheild, a clogged drain hole (which dosn't seem liek it, becuase the water drains off on the side) or something... if I had access to the damn thing then a small access panel that I coudln't see into, I may be able to spot the leak.... I figured that since I knew were it was coming from, and the area can be accessed by moving the carpet back, i was safe to put the interrior back together...

Something strange though... the water will come thru instantly... as soon as it is poured is when it will come in... IOW it dosn't take time to track or find it's way in... and it was a steady stream coming down as I was laying there looking at the water....

I have (bad) pictures of the area... but my camera is in my car, and I am not in the mood to get it right now.... on the previous pic where I said alot of water was coming in... that is the area.... it was weird, it was just coming out of the bolt.... I was thinking about cauking it up from the inside... but I shoulod get it form the outside.... I tried everything to remove the wiper arm, but I coudln't get the thing off....

does anyone have any clue what I am saying at all? any advice on how to fix it? Thanks in advance...

this is really interesting reading your post, because I am experincing the same problem as you. Mine is leaking right below the e brake and i have a pool of water underneath there when it rains. The carpet smells horrible, and will basically never dry because of the winter.

Have you came up with any fix or ideas?
