My car will no longer stay in reverse (pops out) so I'm going to need to either rebuild my tranny or get a rebuilt one and swap it in. I think I read somewhere that someone picked up an "upgraded" one for somewhere on the order of $1500. I have looked at RPM Transmission and TickShift, both of which would require >$100 shipping (each way because of the core) so that bumps the price up at least a couple hundred. Anyone know of a local place similar to the two above that:
a) sells T56 parts, or
b) rebuilds and/or upgrades T56s?
I can pull the tranny out myself (unless I find someone who will do it reasonably), and I also have a local shop that I trust who will rebuild mine if I can find the parts. Problem is I won't know what parts I need until he dives in, so a rebuilt unit plus core looks like the fastest way to go and still remain cheap.
Any suggestions from other New England people? (I'm in Taunton, btw, and car is still drivable, so even if I had to drive 50 miles to bring it to a place that would be fine)
That was me. It's Keisler Engineering. Got mine for $1525 plus freight. They want $1900 so horse trade them. They're in TN. After 2k miles, the trans is really nice. If you use a LS7 clutch kit, balance the flywheel! Otherwise, vibrations at 1800-2000 rpm.
Sorry for the upcoming barrage of questions, but this is a big purchase so I want to benefit from any research you did before you went with Keisler.
Did you look at Tick and RPM before you went with Keisler Engineering? If so, why did you end up going with Keisler?
Did they send you the tranny first and then you had to send your core back or did you send your tranny to them to be rebuilt?
Last question - did you look at any local shops first? I'm seeing a place one town over from me (SlowHawk Performance) that seems to specialize in F-body stuff, and they said they can rebuild mine for $400 + parts if I take the tranny out for them... Does that sound like a reasonable deal and have you heard of those guys?
Have not heard of the other shops you found. Rebuilding to stock is fine, but Keisler puts in heavy duty brass synchros, so I went with them. I am a big ebay shopper and I found them on ebay (which was kind of nice, because their price was posted and also the fact that they had 9 units available...so I figured they might want to deal. There was no core exchange from Keisler. I sold the bad tranny on ebay for $285 plus freight.
Yeah, moved down to Taunton from winchester to fix a house that I need to get rid of. Living in it and fixing it up.
So I thought you were turning your old V into a race-only car? Are you parting it out instead now?
I'd really like to rebuild it and make it good as new again. But if it doesn't look that good, make it a track car. Either way, it would see the track. But I may be adding another car to the livery stable. And I may need extra cash. Dunno yet...
You should look at rkt56.com very good work redid my corvette and I have over 50 track passes on it to the tune of 11.7@120 and works great. Try him out see what he thinks. Ryan
