Anyone with a DTS with a hood ornament? I would like some info regarding how these are installed.

I'm not sure how they are installed. Other than drilling a fairly big hole in your hood. The part is easily bought on Ebay in chrome or gold.

Cadillac quit putting hood ornaments on their cars years ago. Any hood ornaments installed on any Cadillac of recent vintage (at least 2004 or later)would be adding something to the car that was not available from the factory.

Ted, The hood ornament shown is actually a Cadillac accessory listed for the 2006 + up DTS. It is designed specifically for the new DTS hood and is different from the 2000-2005 design. So it may not havwe been put on at the factory, but it is offered by the manufacturer.

No kidding? Huh. I wonder if they put them on in other (foreign) markets? It kind of looks out of place, especially with the huge grille emblem, but I do like seeing it from the drivers seat. Might have to consider one. Any idea on the price?

I think I've seen them on eBay for $79 and up. I wonder if the full color version used on the 2000-2005 would fit?

It may not be a perfect fit. I think the DTS has a slight ridgeline down the center that the DeVille (DHS/DTS) did not (but I could be totally drunk and/or wrong) That said, there's probably a rubber gasket that goes between the hood and the ornament base that could be squished somewhat to compensate for the difference.

I was wondering the same thing because I like the look of the 2000-2005 ornament better. Does anyone have detailed instruction to install it? It does not seem obvious from the picture.

I stumbled across some more info on the elusive hood ornament. It was only available on "sold" cars. ie: the factory wasn't just adding them on stock orders.

RPO code is: T1E.

Price is/was $100 retail.

According to my 2007 DTS RPO code list there were 191 installed on sold 2007 DTSs. That is a real small percentage of the 48524 built.

A 2006 RPO list I have shows that 285 were installed out of 67,735 DTSs made that year.

I wrote to the seller (Caddy Daddy) on Ebay and asked him if the box came with any instructions for drilling and mounting the hood ornament. Sadly he replied that it did not.

Talk about finding a needle in a haystack! I was just surfing around cars.com and spotted another black 2007 DTS with a hood ornament. Curiousity got the best of me, so I ran the VIN thru the www.compnine.com website to see if it was a sold status car. Sure enough, it was! The T1E RPO code was there as well as a code SLL for sold status. So this car has a factory installed standup hood ornament. Maybe these two photos will help you with placement?

Here is the VIN and the link to prove it. http://www.compnine.com/vid.php?vin=1g6kd57y47u212699

There you go. Proof that some were installed from the factory. Ted will still find something to complain about.

Thanks for all of that great info! I got a chance to examine a friend's mom's '99 DeVille and see how those things plug in. I'm going to see if I can find an 00-05 at a dealer to examine it. I want to see if I can do the previous gen color one because I think it's better than the current monotone ornaments. V8Cadillac can you tell us how you did this? I see you are also in NJ so maybe I can watch when you install it if you have not yet?

To anyone interested in this: I went to a dealer that had a large number of Cadillacs with decorations installed. I found a 2007 DTS with the 2002-2005 style ornament installed, proof that it can be done.

I just ordered mine. Here's the link. The seller has four more or the full color style.

i know it isn't the correct non-color one, but I think it looks better. Plus it will pi$$ off Ted because "it didn't come that way from the factory."

I thought there was some kind of legislation against hood ornaments because it could impale a pedestrian. Might have been in Europe.....

That was before they were spring loaded to fold over if hit. Cadillacs have been that way since 1971.

Screw legislation and Ted. My plan from the beginning was to see if I could put a color ornament on the newer hood. Ya, I want to get one but I need a gold one to match the rest of the emblems. So, I talked to BiggDaddyCaddy because he is from Jersey, like me, and he said he will get those as well. Now I'm waiting to check one out a parts department and talk to the tech guys about how to install it. I want to do it myself, so how are you guys planning to do it?

HartfordGuy
01-08-11, 07:39 AM
I will take a look under the hood to see if there is a spot to allow access. If so, drill, some black touch up paint for the edges and pop that sucker in. Of course I may to wait for the spring thaw before I do this. Still snow on the ground from last weeks Nor'Easter, plus another six inches last night and now more coming tomorrow. Sigh... I need to hit the lottery and move south. LOL

I have been undecided about putting a hood ornament on mine.
I have always liked the view of looking out the windshield and seeing the Cadillac ornament on the hood.

But I also like the smooth lines of the new body style.

Ya I like that about classy cars. If you look right on the underside of the hood where the ornament goes, there is a spot where the sheet metal is thinner, as if to make it easier to drill.

My hood ornament arrived from Caddy Daddy.

But it may be a while before I can get it installed. (see photo)

About 6 hours after this photo was taken the snow was up to the door handles!

I agree. To me the hood ornament looks out of place on these cars. It would probably look better if the big crest and wreath were not on the grill. I would not put this on my performance edition. Sometimes less is more. Each to their own.

That's OK. Ted isn't around to complain.

We ended up with an even 24 inches of snow not including drifts. A new record for Hartford.

The hood ornament looks real nice. There is a black plastic grommet that you fit into the hole that needs to be drilled. The ornament then fits down into the grommet and snaps into place by locking tabs on the grommet. There is a flanged lip at the bottom of the hood ornament shaft that goes down into the retainer. So it is a press fit and snaps in place. No fumbling with a nut and washer like on the older style. There is really two holes to be drilled. A large one plus a smaller one to the side that a post fits in that keeps the ornament from twisting after installation.

That's a pretty neat way for it to install, and should be a lot less trouble than putting a washer and nut on it.

Can you give me the part number for the hood ornament, and if the gromet is a different number, that one as well. My Ddad has been looking for this for his 2008 DTS for quite a while and it seems not many people are aware or informed on this, Thank You very much

The part number for the full color ornament is GM# 25722711

The number on the bottom of the retainer is (if my eyes are seeing the tiny print right) 25676911

I don't know what the dealer price is. But you can get them both on Ebay from Caddy Daddy.

I finally got around to it and purchased mine today. Matches my gold package trim. Bigg Daddy Caddy is the best value out of all retailers, and is a great help when speaking with him. Apparently these are stripped of vinyl and chrome and dipped, rather than plated as is. In any case there is a three-year warranty so keep the invoice.

I got quotes of $100-$150 to install, ranging from body shops to dealers. In particular, one guy said he had a lot of experience. He works at the dealership about which I talked earlier in the thread, Royal. After thinking about it, it seems better to take that plunge because if it's even a mm off to my liking, they will have to do it again or get me a new hood. However, if I screw it up, there will likely be bodies. I confidently work on my cars, but this is one thing I think I should outsource. What do you think HartfordGuy?

HartfordGuy

I haven't looked under the hood yet to see what kind of clearance there is. I may still try to do it myself. But I may feel differently after I get my tax refund. :)

Came on Monday. The luster of a new one in person is amazing. I know I'm going to be anal about it being clean once it's installed. I found another Cadillac dealer that offered to do it for $50.

The exact spot where it attaches is a single sheet of metal unlike the rest of the hood which has two layers.

Thanks, thanks. He started by making an outward indentation on the inside under the crest of the hood, then drilled that spot bigger and bigger. Once the retainer holds, you use it as a pilot to drill the smaller hole, also going bigger and bigger. Apply touch-up paint around the bare edges. Snap 'er in and pop 'er in place. Easier than it sounds so be careful.

I got to keep two vials of base coat and top layer that were mixed right there for me.

I DID IT !!!! :bouncy:

I did just what you said Lev. I made a small pilot hole from under the hood in that small circular area. Then from the top kept making the hole larger until the bezel fit. Then made the smaller hole next to it for the locking tab. Hit it with some black touch up paint then snapped it in.

As impressive as it looks from the outside, it looks even nicer from the drivers seat!

Thanks Lev!

I wanted a 9-11 plate for September 11th. But low number tags (four numbers or lower) are restricted in Connecticut and only given out by the DMV Commissioner. So I substituted the letter "I" instead which qualified it as a vanity plate. Submitted it through normal channels and got it.

Clever. Must be some odds of getting it in the whole state.

This is probably the extent of my modifications. I wanted a cloth roof, emblems for the c-pillar, and Sedan DeVille scripts, but I'll probably let it be for the sake of money, plus I'll save that stuff for when I get a classic Caddy. (However long that will take lol).

Hi Lev,
I am wondering if you were able to install it? I got 2007 ornament but it has a flat surface and the hood has a slight ridge dividing it in half. I am just curious if these 2 could work together. Would appreciate any advice on this install.

Thanks,
