: Service Engine Soon

I own a 97 Northstar, 136,000 miles, which is running great. I have just recently had a tune up and keep it serviced well. The Service Engine Soon light is now on 'most of the time'; although it will go out maybe for a day, then back on. The service code is P1645, (evaporative emission (EVAP) Vent solenoid control circuit). Is this a major repair? I am planning a 400 mile trip next week and do not have time for the repair now. Will it cause more damage if I drive with this light on? Thanks for any help. By the way, I am a female senior citizen and only understand plain language!!!

I don't think the EVAP solenoid is a major repair. It sits on top of the engine and is easily accessable. The purpose of the EVAP solenoid it to control the EVAP system. The EVAP system is the to store EVAPorated gas fumes in from the tank and burn them when the engine is running. It shouldn't cause any damage if not repaired immidiately. As long as it is running fine I wouldn't get overly worried about it.
