I was pushed off of the highway and into a guard rail, probably hit at between 40 and 50 mph. this is the second time I had front end damage to a GM car. (last was a grand prix) and no airbag deployment.
Has this happend to anybody else?

I noticed that your hood isnt folded up, nor is your fender crumpled much. Your front end is largely intact. You need frame distortion/intrusion in order to activate the airbag. Bummer your ride got smashed up, but it doesnt look like a severe enough collision to deploy SRS. When they put you car back together, you can used it as an excuse to have the grill painted body color

that's what i was thinking, looks like there was enough 'side impact' to 'cushion' the blow.

If you were injured (head hitting the windshield, etc), then your absolutely correct. If you were not injured, then it worked perfectly, since air-bags can cause severe injury themselfs.
Maybe the computer detected your seatbelt was latched (being used) so, it did not deploy the air-bag in your particular situation.

ROBRR2000,

That was a pretty hard hit, seems like one of the "bags" or the "curtain" should have deployed. There may be more factors involved before the SRS deploy (squared contact, faster speeds, ???), or, you had a defective SRS System. Something hit the front glass, did the seatbelt do its job?

The physics and forces involved in activating SRS are the same physics and forces that deform steel. These are also the same forces that act on your body and internal organs under extreme deceleration. If the frames integrity was not compromised by collision, which it wasn't, neither are your body or organs. These are the factors involved. The vehicle is very intact, it looks to be mostly cosmetic; dont forget todays cars are designed to be rolling crumple zones, accidents often appear to be much worse than they actually are. It is very obvious that none of the airbags should have deployed at all. There is no malfunction in the SRS

PS, if that splat in the windshield is from your head, its because you werent wearing your seatbelt. And if you werent wearing your seatbelt, it wouldnt take much momentum at all to throw you out of your seat. Cant say Im proud, but I sometimes neglect to wear my seatbelt too.

PSS, Last person I knew that was "forced into a guard rail" on the driver side; was actually going too fast on a wet onramp. She too used the excuse of getting run off the road until I called her out and she fessed up.

another vote for nope, not enough impact or just enough sideways force to keep them from deploying.
besides why would you want all that dust to clean up?

oh and how bad is the whack on your head?

For some cars, the airbag doesn't deploy if the seat belt wasn't buckled.

It would explain the crack in the windshield and no airbag deployment.

Just speculation!

Air bag shouldn't of gone off not enough intrusion or force. I hope that busted windshield aint from your head.

Your airbags are not the airbags of yesteryear. They're deployment is based on more that just a smashed front-end. They now deploy as a result of the degree of deceleration of the vehicle. If you had hit a tree or some other object that would have stopped you in your tracks the airbags would have deployed to save you. :banghead: In your guardrail incident GM's thinking is that an airbag deployment would take away your chance to control the vehicle in non-rapid deceleration impact. Also your OnStar system now will call in to find out if you are ok and send the emergency service to your location regardless of airbag deployment. (if your service is active). -sexymomma

I had a head on at a lower speed, 35 or so, and both airbags in my Intrepid deployed. However, the front driver side was pretty beat up, and I definately am glad they deployed.

Perhaps not enough Delta-V. But sensors should be checked to rule-out defective SRS system.

If the airbag deploys the system also captures all sorts of data surrounding the event that can be read out with the proper software. Big brother is watching.

Yep, and you'll be glad when someone wrongfully blames you for an accident and the crash event data vindicates you.

It cuts both ways, and if you're not driving like an idiot you've got nothing to worry about.
