View Full Version : She going to last another 2 years? Stoneage_Caddy 09-16-04, 01:57 PM After a trouble free 4 months were getting back to haveing to work on the car every night ......
Just got to 130k ......
As it sits right now the tailights may need a new wireing harness , it needs a window motor for the right rear window , the suspension message wont go away no matter what , the A/C compressor is makeing all kinds on noise down there , the rear rotors are warped bad , the ISC motor has crapped out completly (normal i guess),that stupid dead lifter wont shut up ,and its shifting so god damn hard for a luxury car...... :want:
Now i have to decide weither i should spend another 2 grand on it or trade her in .......
Hows your high milage caddy treating you ? Depends, do you think that if you put a couple grande in it you could get it back? What could you get for it if you sold it now, or traded? (mind you, trading probably wouldn't get you as much as a private sale.)
Do you want to keep it? Stoneage_Caddy 09-16-04, 07:30 PM i can only get about 6 grand out of it , bought it for 4900 spent 800 so far , itd be close if i spent the cash on it ....
Part of me wants to keep it a long time , the other part says "look at all those electronics that will burn out"
New problem :trunk wont open via remote , has to be done with key , solenoid went bad ....
So next month will be a long one , ill probably keep it , but dayum there gonna be alot of "HOW TO's" coming from me I had the same thing happen with my trunk yesterday and it wouldn't open with the remote, but then today it did?? I thought I might need new batteries but I lucked out. For some reason I have to press it harder every time.
You got a good deal on that car when you bought it. Stoneage_Caddy 09-16-04, 07:39 PM its was a mechanics speical ......just didnt know what i was in for
in reality it is all small stuff , the engine and trany show no signs of giving up , outside anything driven by the belt= getting ready to replace a/c compressor and alternator (bad bearing)- after that there wont be a original thing left when it comes to acessory system
Im probably at that magic mark when alot of stuff breaks and gets fixed and goes another hundred thousand ...someone please say yes illumina 09-16-04, 07:40 PM i bought my 91' seville for $4000.00 with 117k miles on the clock. she has had her ups and downs (see the "my bad day" post), but overall, she has been good to me ( knock on wood :) ).
stoney, keep her and make her shine. one day she will be a classic. and the 4.9 is cake to work on too! The '91 Seville is a nice looking car, and even more fat is trimmed off compared to mine. A member on here named KC had a 1991 Seville and he experienced no problems until around 150,000 miles.
Stoney, could the hard shifting be a simple "servo spring?" Do electronic transmissions have these? My Pontiac was shifting really hard on downshifts coming to red lights, etc. and when I had the pan dropped and new fluid installed, the tranny place just put in a new spring and presdo! It's been smooth for the last 14 years. Stoneage_Caddy 09-16-04, 08:53 PM nope , its just really harsh when warm going from first to second off the light , at WOT the car rocks hard on every shift ....
Im thinking its the rear engine mount ,cuz when i put the dog bone mount back in after doing the front mount i had to jack the rear or the engine up and move the dog bone ajustment all the way to the rear , and then it was a tight fit ...It could also be the mod valve , but its not leaking atf , but also my B&M shift improver does nothing which means it surely must have a vaccum leak ....
I guess ill tear the car down over thanksgiving week and weekend to fix everything and maybe add one of those tranny coolers with the fan on it along with a new modulator valve....
illumina - your right about the engine being easy to work on .... Fred Fachman 09-16-04, 09:51 PM Sorry to hear about the tough luck. I run all my Caddies 200,000 plus before I even consider another. I haven't had any trouble, however. My 89 Deville had 245,000 when I traded and still ran strong. My current 95 STS has 214,000 and am keeping it since the dealer only offered me $1000 on trade for a 99 Escalade. I bought the escalade anyway. The 4.9 is a great engine and is easy to work on, but the other repairs can get more costly than the engine. Good used Devilles are easy to find and very reasonably priced. I looked at a 2000 Deville yesterday for $13,000. 98's with less than 100K can be had for less than 10 grand. Good luck on whatever you decide, just stay with a Cad. Stoneage_Caddy 09-16-04, 09:54 PM if i do trade itll be for a vette or allante , something that i could see being worth dumping more than it is worth into as it may appriciate ...or a 2k and up deville , just because i like them My current 95 STS has 214,000 and am keeping it since the dealer only offered me $1000 on trade for a 99 Escalade. I bought the escalade anyway.
I'm glad you kept the STS, it certainly is worth keeping for that measily price offered!! I bet if you put it through private sale you could get 4k easy? Welcome aboard btw!
Stoney: about transmissions, when my Dad bought that DTS last year the dealer told him that if it ever starts shifting hard, etc, a quick call to onstar and they can adjust it from space! Unbelievable! Stoneage_Caddy 09-16-04, 10:19 PM yup , software updates , these 99 and up GM cars and trucks are really something ....seems everytime the malibu maxx or the pickup goes in to the dealer thay have a update for us , its like bill gates built these cars or something You should probably just keep it and fix it, I mean if you don't fix it and sell no one probably will ever fix it. Then its a good car that needs a little extra gone to waste. Of course its always refreshing to get a new car.
Fred Fachman, How do you keep your cars that long, are they all highway miles? welcome to the forums. my friends 84 cutlass has almost 300k on it and it is perfect. his dad bought the car new and always kept good engine upkeep on it. they did replace the transmission about 2 years ago though. it aint hard if you take care of it. DaveSmed 09-19-04, 02:13 PM Hell, mine's 36 years old. Looks like it should have no problem lasting another 36, and supposedly build quality and manufacturing standards have gone up exponentally. Besides, having a challenge is always a welcome time waster, I would be the type to keep messing with the computer regarding that suspension light. Fred Fachman 09-19-04, 05:35 PM Majax, Mostly highway miles here in rural Nebraska. The wife drives 50 miles round trip to work and we live 12 miles from a shopping mall.
I am home on leave from Iraq till the 28th and needed a vehicle for my daughter to drive to school. So we bought the Esacalade and kept the STS for her. I got my Dad's old Cadillacs when I was in school, so I don't feel bad letting my 14 year old daughter drive a Cadillac to school. She thinks its cool. When I was driving my Dad's back in the late 70's and early eighties, it wasn't so cool until we went to the quarter mile blacktop east of town. I will always have respect for those 472/500's. Dave Smed- Keep that '68 and never let her go. I sold my '60/62 series sedan prior to being deployed to Iraq and will miss her.
I really enjoy this forum and will look forward to it when I get back to Iraq. Too much to do at home for the next week. Fred barge master 09-19-04, 08:01 PM That's the curse of old luxury cars. The more features, the more headaches. I only keep my old cars on the road cause I can do all the work myself and I use a lot of scavenged parts. They cost almost nothing to run that way, and they run great besides. If you like it, 130,000 isn't too high. I got an old Caprice w/272,000 I used to drive and it could still be put on the road if needed. Stoneage_Caddy 09-20-04, 10:43 AM yah , its just this 792 dollar repairbill thats going to be hard to swallow this afternoon (damn A/C compressor)
hoplefully the rest of the stuff that goes wrong ill have the tools for ..... barge master 09-20-04, 09:33 PM It isn't easy to say screw the A/C in Florida either. | |
