: Report: Hyundai Sonata overtakes Nissan Altima for third in mid-size segment

Hyundai is movin' on up. According to The Detroit News, the Sonata officially displaced the Nissan Altima as the third best-selling mid-size sedan in America last month. In August, the Korean manufacturer sold 21,399 units, falling just behind the Honda Accord at 22,506 and the Toyota Camry at a little over 30,000. Those numbers are just based on retail sales, not the vehicles that are sold off to rental fleets. The Sonata has been besting rivals like the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu for a good while now, but this is the first time the car has managed to rattle the Japanese triumvirate that dominates the segment.

As they go on to say, it was only a matter of time... I'm simultaneously surprised and not surprised. The new Malibu (not really so new anymore) is really cheap on the inside. Otherwise, I like it.. The new Ford Fusion really impresses me.. And I'm sure the new Malibu will be equally as impressive (it has to be if GM wants to stay in business). But it's not either of these cars that are creeping up on the number one spot. It's a Hyundai...

What's the game plan? How does GM plan on moving forward? I thought GM was going to be making Toyota sweat. But it's not - it's Hyundai.. They did a really great job with their Sonata - and the new Kia version is right behind. And as a matter of fact, most people are saying they like the Kia even more...

Some people here are going to say this is all just because the media loves Hyundai or some nonsense like that. Well that's not it. If it were, it would be really simple for GM to come out on top by simply spending all their money on marketing and schmoozing the media. It just doesn't work that way. Hyundai is making excellent products - cars good enough that they're only about a thousand mid-size cars shy (per month) before they're #2 behind Toyota.

It seems to me that Hyundai isn't just making cars that compete with (or are compatible with) their competitors - they're doing one better. This is what GM needs to do. I know they're just out of a bankruptcy but something has to happen - quickly. You know Honda and Nissan aren't going to sit around and watch Hyundai and Kia take over.. So you can bet the next Camry, Accord and Altima are going to be very, very impressive.. What are the grumblings regarding a future Malibu and Fusion?

Good, because the Altima is crap.

I am sure in that segment price has a lot to do with it. No disputing that Hyundai is delivering a great product at a great price, but if their tariff preferences were lifted they wouldn't be as price competitive. But it does say a lot about Hyundais management that they are coming up with products that win growing sales in the USA!

The Hyundai Sonata has a new, very nice looking design. The Altima is essentially working off a modified one that several years old. Time for Nissan to step up.

I half agree with this. The Altima is still basically running off the new for 2002 design. I'm sure the styling department can come up with something a little more exciting.

The part I don't agree with is that the Sonata is a good looking car. The exterior of the car is just about BFU to me. It looks like someone put a Toyota Solara in a microwave, so that it expanded like a marshmallow and then cooled off and settled with all of the wrinkles. No thanks. I thought the last Sonata was a much better looking car.

Hey, ga_etc, get with the program, it's not about how they really look but whether they look like everyone elses coupe back sedan!

I'd really rather not. A coupe-like sedan is fine, but the new Sonata is still ugly.

Yeah, those headlights are gross.

That whole CAR is gross. I know two people who drive previous-gen Sonatas though, and they're quite nice.

Some folks certainly do like the new design because as the article points out, they're selling (and I see them fairly frequently now). Relatively few cars stand out as unique in their exterior and/or interior design. A lot tend to resemble the others out there, especially good sellers that came before. GM is doing it with the Buicks now and the new SRX. Very simply it produces sales.

When it looks boring and like everything else, everyone complains. When it looks different and risky, everyone complains... Like CIWS said - somebody likes them. I see them all over the road..

There's a middle ground between boring and ugly. Usually its achieved by the BMW 3-series (not so much the current 5-series, or the rest of BMW).

I don't really care for the new 5 series. It's not particularly striking to me, or particularly bland.

I guess I'm of the minority, but I really liked the Bangle 5 series. Especially if it was equipped with the sport appearance package. :yup:

I don't really see too many differences between the two. Though, I'm not really fond of BMW on the whole, they don't strike me as interesting to look at on the road, and most of the time just get passing glances, if that.

BMW has always been on the more conservative side when it comes to styling, now they're starting to stand out a little more. The new 5 series has a real presence to it in person.

I agree. The real 5-series has weird lines that resemble a Toyota Solara.

The new Sonata is a fine looking car. I ALMOST bought one. The test drive is what pulled me away. After checking it out and listening to the salesman rable on about how it drives like a Lexus, I drove it. Even with the paddle shift and whatever other crap the salesman was talkin', it felt like my '00 Camry. The car is not quick nor fast. I simply didn't enjoy the test drive and decided to get a second hand REAL luxury car.

That previous-gen Sonata was so gorgeous. It looked a 2/3s Audi A8 from most angles, and if I'm not mistaken Hyundai stole an Audi design exec at some point.

As for the 5 series, I do greatly appreciate the design of the F10, but dammit, now its impossible to tell the 5 series apart from the 7 series... worse than anytime in the past. Good thing for 5 series owners, BAD for 7 series owners.

With the current gen 5 and 7 series, the only thing you get in the 7 series is more room and your wallet lightened by about another $20,000.

Honestly to me it looks like they took their design ques from the older Jaguar XJ.

I just drove a Sonata for a week - a cheap vacation rental. It's a pig to drive in its base trim. No power at all and the five-speed automatic isn't well paired to the four-banger. If you don't mind driving as slow as a truck, the mileage is OK. At times it is so bad as to be dangerous.

Handling is poor, worse than most FWD's. No seat adjustments but they do include lighted vanity mirrors instead. (This is good design?) The steering wheel can be adjusted up & down but it's rough. Maybe higher trim levels have adequate creature comforts. The radio was OK but tinny.

The ride is OK and it's roomy, but other than that; just another sh*tbox. A Malibu is a much nicer car.
