Priceline has let me down twice now, beaten by the easier to use and much cheaper Travelocity Secret Hotels. The Travelocity ads emphasize "no need to bid" which seems silly until I discovered that Travelocity is also consistently cheaper.
Examples:
Oklahoma City
Tried booking a 3-star on Priceline for $64 including fees. Didnt get it.
Travelocity got me a 3-star in OKC for $60 total.
Washington MO
Tried booking a 2-star on Priceline for $55 Didn't get it.
Travelocity got me a 2-star for $50.
Corpus Christi TX
Tried a 3-star on Priceline for $80 plus fees. Didn't get it.
Travelocity got me a 3-star for $72.
Travelocity was also a little bit quicker and easier to use. The disadvantage is that you cant use the Secret Hotels in all towns, but it works in most large and medium size cities.
Anyone have similar luck with Orbitz or Expedia? Is Hotels.com any good?
I've been impressed with Jesda's track record getting nice hotels for cheap at the Chicago meets, but my own experience with Priceline when I drove Cruella to North Dakota this spring was less than stellar. Couldn't get anything in Pullman, WA and the hotel I did get in Billings, MT was only just OK. I realize neither is exactly a big tourist destination, but there were plenty of hotels I saw in Billings (it's the largest city in Montana and right on I-90) where I would have rather stayed and likely not paid much more. I think the next time I have the opportunity, I will try Travelocity's Secret Hotels. Worth a shot.
I did some looking on Hotels.com when we were planning the Minneapolis meet and saw a good price advertised at the Hilton. But it was Ranger calling and arranging a group rate that got us an excellent deal at a very nice hotel.
I am sorry, having known that SOB William Shatner personally, I would not support any product he was associated with. Was he a murderer? L.A.P.d. couldn't prove it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't true! He has made a career out of displaying the despicable side of human nature .... in personal life he out did his sordid image. I wouldn't give support to this guy if he gave me free lodging ..... but that is my personnal position. A younger generation thinks this ass... is cool or at least worth listening to, those of us who really knew this person, knew him to be a true Hollywood miscreant, worthy of rebuke. So support him in his ads if you wish .... but know in that support you are supporting (he doesn't know whether it is true or not, he does it for money) one of the real low life's of our generation's (Boomeer) members!
I've used Hotels.com, Orbitz, and Expedia for booking rooms around the world. I have never had any bad experience with those so far. I have yet to try priceline so I couldn't give you any advice on the quality of the site.
I usually use http://www.carrentals.com/ for car rental. The last car I rented from them was a Dodge Charger for 18$/day, and there was some cars for 10$/day as well!
I only go after 4 star hotels through priceline. Those places have the highest margins and therefore biggest available percentage discounts - especially on non-peak time slots. I likes getting a swanky joint for "half" or more off regular prices.
Of course, there was that time in Iowa Priceline put me in a 4 star hotel with half the floors ripped down to studs for remodeling. Had a brand new room ( too new, it smelled ) and only 1 operating elevator out of 3.
