Apparently there really are American crocodiles living in the the United States. While only present in the most southerly counties of Florida (the American crocodile cannot toleraterate temperatures of 60 degrees F or lower) and the Florida keys. Unlike the alligator, which flourishes throughout Florida and Gulf states, the American crocodile can tolerate a saltwater environment and is found in both freshwater and brackish environments.

While found in very limited numbers, thought to be less that 1500 individuals, the American crocodile is considered to be an endangered species. Aside from its' critical intolerance of cold temperatures, the American crocodile differs from the alligator, which is only indigenous to North America, in having a pointier snout as opposed to the alligators broader more rounded snout. While both are dangerous predators, the crocodile is believed to be more aggressive.

Alligators I can verify - when I left Charleston (Isle of Palms) SC in '79 the drainage ditches which crisscrossed the island were alligator heaven - it was common to hear stories of some miniature Fido turning up MIA. The critters ranged in size from 12" to 12 feet !! Someone once said that, for the first 30 feet, an alligator can outrun a horse.

Karen says there are areas below the Miami line where crocodiles are often seen.

The lizard on the chase lounge in the typical come hither pose is strangely arousing. :hide: :p

Yes, there are American Crocodiles. Also, Crocodiles are NOT the coolest Lizard in FL, mostly because they are NOT lizards whatsoever. The only reason why The Deities actually created Alligators and Crocodiles in Florida is so that people who release pythons into the wild would be able to rest assured that their pythons would not starve, as there are plenty of alligators and crocodiles to eat in the everglades and down by the keys. This is also the only reason I support the existence of the invasive species in FL, such as wild boar. They make excellent food sources for Burmese and Reticulated Pythons, which are by far cooler than crocodiles OR alligators and (when full grown) are in every way superior to the alligator and crocodile. 45 feet of pure, indeterminate-growth spawned muscle, enough to crush and consume even a hippopotamus (which as nature teaches us, is the natural enemy of The Saltwater Crocodile and is responsible for more deaths in Africa than the other animals). It is no wonder native tribes have been known to worship large pythons local to their dwellings as Gods and make offerings to them.

I've got a lovely girl here who'd love to meet you. Give her another 12-18 months though, I'd rather she was hungry if she's about to crush the life from you. Wouldn't want to waste a body. Then again, if she doesn't eat you, I'll make m'self a nice new pair of daisyroots.

Hah. No, I'm no hippie who thinks leather or animal products are evil. Actually, my first lesson of FL was that if you dress with a skinned wolf pelt over your shoulder, random Walmart employees try to pet it and then you...well, you get escorted from the store...

Cows for example, are strictly for me to eat, use the milk from, feed to my snakes and of course, to be used to make Leather seating for our cars.
