It looks to me like it might be possible to install the stud kit while the engine is still in the car. At least the front head looks very accessible. Does the block have to be put on a stand under a drill press to tap for studs or can you do it with a hand drill?
It's done with a hand drill, but the rear will need a 90 degree angle drill. It's been done, but the general consensus is that it is MUCH easier to do by dropping the cradle. Installing the head over the studs is all but impossible. No room. Inserts you can get away with though.
No room to work + drill jig blocks + 90 degree drill work + impossible to place head over rear studs = invitation for misalignment and mechanical nightmare.
Doing it in the car is absolutely the hard way. The cradle is made to be dropped easily. Use an engine hoist to lift the body off and it is soooooooooo easy to work on the engine and do it right. There are threads on doing it.
