: Changing brake pads - do I have to do all 4?

I'm thinking of changing my pads over to Hawk HPS's, mainly just because I'm sick of my wheels being caked in brake dust one day after I wash the car. Obviously, it's mostly the fronts that dust really bad, so I'm wondeirng if I can get away with changing only the front pads. I'm afraid this might throw off my braking system though, since the Hawks have different braking properties than the stock pads do. So ... I've gotta bite the bullet and change all 4, don't I...?

how old are the rear pads now?

You can just replace the fronts, for a second I thought you were asking if you had to replace all 4 pads on the front!
Do the rears when they are needed.

I did the fronts before I did the rears. No big deal.

I don't now how old any of the pads are. I've only had the car a few months now. They look like they've got LOTS of life left in 'em though; as do the fronts. I just hate the dust. It's ridiculous. Good to know that changing the fronts before the rears wont hurt cause unfortunately it looks like the rears aren't 1/2 the price of the fronts like lots of cars I've done brakes on before. They're basically the same cost for rears as fronts, so I would REALLY like to leave the rears alone and just get the front done since it's not a matter of them being worn out.

When you pull the fronts let me know what they look like. If you are just going to trash them let me know cause I will take them.

Should you change the fluid when you do the pads? Also, how much fluid does our V take?

I used less than a liter to compleatly flush the brake system just a few weeks ago. If the fluid is dark at all, change it.

I'm doing all 4 corners pads and rotors. Do you want mine? I was going to trash them. They aren't in bad shape. Just figured i'd do new ones.

If there is still plenty of life left, yeah I'll take them. I go through pads like water. People tell me I drive agressively but I don't really see it lol

Yeah, fronts are pretty new...maybe 20,000 miles on them. They are not stock, they are Wagner Thermo Techs or somthing like that.

You want the rotors too? They arent bad.

They are stock pads right?

Yeah I was looking for stock pads. I like the way they stop. I've had the Wagner's and they fade a little fast for my driving style. I really like the stock pads and the performance friction from O'riellys.

Are the Hawk HPS's popular? I've found them a little better than the Performance Frictions on another vehicle.

ill also take any 'like new' ferodo pads anyone is tossing out... they dust like hell but stop the car on a dime. i switched to a low dust pad and the tradeoff is not worth it imo.

Sorry for the threadjack. I'm done. HPS pads aren't really that sticky but some people like them. HP+ is a better pad. I have the Perfomance Friction and I really like their pads.

Yah, wow ... this thread really took off! lol My original question was answered anyway though, so I don't mind.

I think my pads will still be in pretty good shape, and as far as I know they're the OEM ones. So whoever's interested in them, PM me and we'll go from there.

I sent a pm but I'm on my phone and not sure it went. It was doing weird things. Anyway, I'll take them.

I didn't get the PM. I'm in no rush to do the pads, but when I do I will definitely let you know. We'll have to figure something out for covering shipping costs, etc once I get them out and send you a couple pictures of them. Trying PMing me again with your email address and we'll go from there.

As soon as I get on a computer I will! Still on my phone. Don't worry I'll cover shipping.

Do some reading around ... particularly the FAQ. You'll find some suggestions there.
