Can you buy regular shocks for the Seville aftermarket? Or do you have to go with the dealer and get the fancy computer controlled shocks? My check ride control light finally went out, but I need to replace the shocks. Dont want to drop big dealer $$$ in a '92. thx.
My neighbor works at the Parts Dept at the local Cadillac dealer. He's told me for several years now that GM electronic struts are no longer available (or haven't been for some time). I remember about 4-5 years ago when they were phasing them out you could get the electronic jobs for $800 a peice. Even then, the cadillac dealer was installing the less expensive passive shocks and their customers were pleased (or didn't know the difference). My neighbor said he was pretty sure that the passive GM replacements are made by Monroe. They selll them at the cadillac dealer for about $180 ea, but I bought Monroe's for my 93 for something like $48 ea at Norther Auto Parts http://www.naparts.com/. Napa sells the Monroe replacements too and here they run about $58 or so each. I went with the "OEM" quality ride, but they have a higher-end strut which will be a little stiffer. I was torn between which to get, and would love to have been able to try them out side by side, which of course, is impossible to do. If your car also has rear air load leveling struts, they are a couple bucks more. Gabriel also makes struts that will work. If you aren't into replaceing struts, better to have a shop that has the right equipment do it.
I also have a 92 Seville and for that car, I think I would probably go with the firmer riding strut if I were replacing them. But I've been really happy with what I installed on my DeVille.
Thanks Mark I'm going to check it out. Thats a heck of a lot cheaper than $800 per!
