: How's Your Oil Usage?

Changed the oil today. Last time was in November, and I'm just about at 2k miles since then with six quarts of Mobil 1 5w-30 and an Amsoil Ea032 filter.

Since I recycle the oil by putting it back into the quart bottles, I noticed this time that I had basically six quarts of used oil for the six quarts that I put in seven months ago for zero oil usage! At 50k on an LS6, that seems to be pretty decent! :highfive:

Anybody see any oil usage beyond, say, a half quart or so between changes?

Is that on the stock rotating assembly (mainly rings)?

I've heard of many LSXs doing that well, despite initial reports of oil consumption. Maybe they all broke in...interestingly, I've heard of oil consumption on many of the Gen IV engines like the L76, LS3, etc.

What is the fuel cutout now set to?

I saw basically zero oil consumption in 5k miles over 6 months, using M1 10w-30. Stock internals, but running a maggie.

My V (singular) makes oil. I never add oil between changes, the dipstick always shows full, and I have to empty my oil catch can periodically. I think it is because the air in Houston contains more water and chemicals than oxygen.

I changed my oil Saturday and had about the same result- 6.5 quarts in, about the same out. I didn't measure what came out though. My LS2 is at 29k miles. Very little usage in 5k or so miles is very good.

I changed the oil in my daughter's older Honda last week. I think it uses a quart of oil in about 2k miles.

With 43,000 miles, I was a half quart down at the most recent change. I use the oil monitor, which = about 7,000 mile intervals.

Pretty similar here on my '05 with 57,000.

Geez, a half quart in 7k miles. Not bad!

As for the older Honda, a quart in 2k miles isn't bad if it's in the 100k area.

I remember having a '74 Vega stationwagon back in '81 as a beater. :hide: It gave a lot of credence to the old saying, "Check the gas and fill up the oil."

Years ago my dad had bought an old wornout delivery van to use for hunting trips. Turns out that van would burn a quart of oil in under 50 miles. They headed out one winter and about 200 miles away the timing chain went out so they had to have a new one installed. When they got back he overhauled the engine. This was a Dodge van, with the little eccentric mounted in front of the cam timing gear to operate the fuel pump. Well the next trip I went along and that eccentric came loose early one cold morning out in the middle of nowhere. We got a tow back into the little town, to a big gas station with service bays. The only guy at the station said they had no mechanic but we said that was OK because we had 2 with us. So my buddy and I quickly tore the front off of the engine and tightened everything back up.

Frankly low oil usage is really nothing more than a feel good in most cases. My '97 F-150 has 330,000 miles and has used a quart of oil every 1000 ish miles for the last 200,000 miles. It still runs the same with same power and fuel mileage as new, and I've added about 200 quarts of oil between changes. It still has the original cats and 2 of the original O2 sensors.

I've read people online who freak when their vehicle uses a quart every 2000 miles. Some if it uses a quart between changes. It's really only a big deal if you are too stupid or lazy to understand your car and check and add oil as needed:thepan:

I change my V's oil based either on the oil monitor or 5,000 miles and usually loose about .5 quart.
I followed the same schedule on my 05' Acura TL, but always had to add at least 1 quart mid-way, then more as I approached 5k.... it usually burned about 3 quarts total per oil change. I thought that was very high, but the dealer insisted that was "within spec".
