: How I Ended Up With a Different GTI Called a Thunderbunny

As you all know I traded in my CTS-V a month ago on what was supposedly a brand new 2009 GTI. After I found out that the "brand new" Gti had hidden body damage on it I brought it to my local VW dealer to get checked out and found that it had already been sold to someone else and repod. Apparently in Illinois this is legal and you can resell the car as new as long as it was never titled.

Long story short the dealership that I bought the car from claimed ignorance and the sales manager said they couldn't (wouldn't) help me. After about a month of back and fourth with them I finally had a sit down with the owners yesterday. The owner is a GREAT guy (car enthusiast and race car driver sponsored by APR and VW) and quickly offered to put me in a brand new 09 GTI. He was also VERY enthusiastic about my CTS-V and said that he would probably just keep it for his private collection (it was already parked in the service garage next to his 3 other race cars). In the end I ended up with this Black Magic Pearl GTI with the Factory Thunderbunny Appearance Pacakge:

If anyone is in the market for a VW, Mazda, Subaru, or Nissan I would definitely recommend the Autobarn.

I already regret the black but it was the only brand new 2009 they had left and it has a lot of "pearl flake" in it so it isn't completely black.. I also had a small meeting with a truck retread on the highway and i need to get some touch up paint for her :(

Hahaha considering some 19x8.5 xxr518 wheels since they were what came with the original thunderbunny package. 245s should fit..I would like something a bit wider then the 225s for track days.

Thunderbunny? I'm not making any man vs. woman argument here, but that is a feminine sounding marketing term, no?...and to quote Seinfeld, not that there is anything wrong with that. I had a Mazdaspeed3 before the V and would argue that the V is at least as practical in nearly every sense. Maybe a little less mpg, but more room, better ride, and generally more enjoyable as a DD. But that was just my personal experience. Sometimes you just have to "hit that" and she what another brand is all about, thats how I ended up here.

SkullV, you were into the autocross events, right? I could see why you would favor that GTI over the V in that case. Lighter, nimbler front drivers definitely have an advantage in that arena. Good luck with the new toy.

A little update:

Added the OEM 7" touchscreen navigation from the 2010 VW line. It is crazy how much different it is then the V navigation but then again I didn't mind the V navigation like some of you guys did. I also added a boost gauge in the vent and got an APR Stage 1 Tune. The tune includes tunes for stock, 91, 93, and 100 octane fuel and is selectable through the cruise control stalk (cool technology!) I also have to enter a password through the cruise stalk to change the tunes. This means that when I go to the dealer I can lock in stock and they will never know! The best part is that my local VW dealer is the regional APR dealer as well and they are 100% mod friendly.

I love them, I ordered some real carbon fiber extensions for them when I first got the red GTI but they are still on back order (sucks). The whole car feels much quicker with the tune (added ~50hp/50tq at the crank went from max boost 10psi to max boost 16psi) but it's still no V. Based on power:weight I still need another 60 crank hp to be as fast as a stock V.

I've got to be honest, I am not feeling that car at all. It's a bit on the feminine-looking side for my taste. But I am glad you are happy with the purchase, that's all that matters.

JimmyH
06-29-10, 08:54 PM
I would be careful adding power Ted
reading between the lines on the gti forums it seems to me the stock output is already pushing the edge of what that mechatronic can handle
their durability is questionable as it is

yea i heavily dislike the stock denvers.. GOOOD choice.. 1.tints2.springs and those wheels eventually and that car is set for a DD beater for the next 5 years... but i really would think the VW basic warranty would be longer..3 years 36k is pretty skimpy... i would prob pick up a 2.0 track spec Hyundai Genesis Coupe as a DD right now.. 10 years 100k..

60 crank hp is real easy to get. my friends 1.8t would rape my v even if he starts in a higher gear. once you drive one with a bit more mods you will be sold on at least a dp and exhaust.

Like I said on the other forum, the trade in price was right, the deal was right, I was getting tired of the typical V issues (event though most were corrected with aftermarket parts) and I'll be back in a V in a few years. Hopefully the build quality will be that much improved by then.

Well, just another little update. I love the GTI, already added a full Carbon Fiber (Carbonio) stage 2 intake which really woke the car up with the tuning. I do however regret 100% getting the "Thunderbunny" package. About 2 weeks into owning the car some dick in a Porsche Cayenne backed up into me and destroyed the front bumper and driver front fender. The big issue here is that the bumper is IMPOSSIBLE to find it has been sitting at the body shop for 2 weeks waiting on the bumper that is FINALLY supposed to show up on the 19th.

I guess it's ok since it's Summer in the city and all my time is being taken up by getting ready for law school and this bad boy:

Yes, this is actually a blessing in disguise. Apparently this GTI also had covered up body damage. The bumper was apparently epoxied on the inside and the paint was messed up. Needless to say I will not be purchasing from this dealership again, but they do have an excellent service department.

Looking at Audi A4s and VW EOS. I was also looking at V2s (no ' for BigJim....the CTS doesn't own anything) but they are just too big for the permit parking I have here in the city. You couldn't pay me to buy another V1 after spending some time with this car. My V1 was in the shop more the first month I owned it (still stock) than the entire time I owned this GTI. The other option is to buy the 2008 Benz C300Sport 4Matic that my Dad's wife is currently driving. They were planning on trading it in in the next month anyway.

Just wanted to check in with my old V Bretheren who gave me so much crap when I made the switch :)

Thanks for the concern everyone. I am doing alright. Neck/back pain and the obvious headaches from my face hitting the airbag.

You sure? I know where you could buy a V cheap. Of course, it kinda looks like Thunderbunny...

Well, managed to turn a wrecked 2009 GTI with 22k on the clock into a brand new GTI without paying a penny over my State Farm settlement, in fact I pocked a little over 2K!

I hope all you old timers are doing well, I'll keep checking in from time to time. By the way, if anyone has put a straight axle under a V1 by now someone please PM me the details........

It's the old man. He has bought a few cars from the salesperson I was working with. The guy I bought my last GTI from was not there so I had him tag along.
