: Favorite singer.

I know some threads have been started over music, but mostly only bands were discussed. So I ask, does anyone have a favorite singer or songstress that just sings alone, not in a band?

I like Michael Jackson, got bit by that bug rather recently. Frank is on the list, too.
And just day before yesterday, I bought Luis Miguel's "Amarte es un placer" album. Even though I understand about 2% of what he is singing, if I am lucky, there is something unbelievably captivating and powerful about his voice. Luis Miguel caught my eye, or, rather, ear, quite some time ago.

So, anyone else?

Barbra Streisand has the most beautiful singing voice of anyone who ever walked the planet.

Unfortunately, she also uses the voice to speak.

For pure singing voice, Freddy Mercury. I also find Sarah McLachlan and Dido to have great voices, in fact "hauntingly beautiful" in some songs.

Oh, and Robert Plant just for pure adrenaline.

I'll agree with that. Even though I don't listen to new music because I think 99% of everything people write today is absolute crap / filler, my fiance is BIG time into Dido. We listen to what she wants once in a while, and I have to say, a lot of her stuff they don't play on the radio is absolutely fantastic sounding.

If I had to pick one favorite it would be Mariah Carey.
I like her style. Good timing. She has an excellent voice, nice tonal quality, awesome range and always on pitch. She can sing gravely and gritty or syrupy smooth. She's easy on the eyes too.

Of current singers...
Queen Latifa - Listen to her Jazz album, and her rendition of California Dreaming. She's got a voice
Sting - The man is still a great artist
Seal - Great voice, though he's not very prolific
Dave Matthews Band - Oddly fun most of the time, other times, eerily poignant.
