the end of an era...another one bites the dust

The GTI is pretty nice indeed. I hate promoting Sauerkraut, but for a compact sport, you can't beat it. That dsg is pure magic. It's no substitute for a proper third pedal, but it works. As long as it doesn't break anyway (which they commonly do).

Well guys the deal is done. They gave me 19k on my trade with the headers/catback/cai still on it and did not inflate the price one bit. I walked out the door (after tax/title/etc.) for less then their asking price which was already VERY low compared to market value. There was no way I would pass that car on to a forum member. While there was NO problems caused by the nitrous (Sorry to disappoint you Whisler :rtfinger:) the cam bolt issue really made me lose faith in the car. I drove it as hard as it could possibly be driven and loved every minute. I got a brand new GTI with every option but navigation, since VW navigation sucks and the savings is enough to get a new pioneer nav installed. I will miss the V a lot but it was really time for a change. I will be back with a V coupe in a few years but for now this was just too good a deal to pass up.

I do have some stuff for sale. The full nitrous kit which I will sell at an INSANE price ($450 + shipping for EVERYTHING including 2 bottles), I have a set of track wheels/RE01Rs with 5/32 tread left that I will sell as a set for $650 + Shipping, HPtuners PRO with 2 credits left (1 car) that I will sell for $300 SHIPPED, a Kenne Bell Boost-a-pump that I will sell for $175 SHIPPED, and various other things I can't think of right now. I will make classified ads for everything so it isn't jumbled in this thread.

Thanks a lot guys for making my V ownership a more enjoyable experience. If it wasn't for this awesome community I would have never enjoyed this car the way I did. For the most part everyone here was really cool and the few bad apples didn't manage to make it that bad! Thanks again guys. I'll be around for a little while until these parts sell and I'll probably see some of you midwest guys at a track day/meet or 2.

I have spent a little time flogging my step-dad's 08 GTI. It is a great little sport compact. There might be some understeer, but I would not say it is that bad, and the steering itself is about as good as you are going to find in a fwd car.

you should check out this forum:

http://www.golfmkv.com

Hands down, the BEST GTI forum.

As for the paddle shifters, I have always felt they are gimmicky, but more the power to you. I prefer using the console shifter for manual shifts.

Just reprogam the computer and pump it up. Father In law did that to his 08 and loves it. I think he has a max HP near 290 and tourque with a similar number.

I feel fine about my purchase. I didn't buy this car to be the fastest car on the street, I bought it to be comfortable, fun to drive, and MUCH more reliable then my CTS.:lies: MUCH? Have you spent much time around VW's. They have their issues. My buddy sees lots of VW's and Audi's with coil and air meter issues in his shop. Still, I do like GTI's. They are very fun to drive, and are much more suited to life in the city than the V. Let us know how you like it after some time behind the wheel.

I think they might finally have that mechatronic figured out. I think they replaced about half of them in 08 :D
Still, heat is an enemy of the DSG, so you have to be careful on really hot summer days; try not to do alot of starting/stopping in traffic. It's like the car forgets how to slip the clutch. But the rest of the time....it shifts so fast you wonder what the hell happened.

Gus_Mahn
05-05-10, 10:35 PM
My wife and I almost bought a '09 TDI Jetta. Other than the early diesel shifts, I was really impressed with the fast, positive, smooth shifts. Easily, it was the best shifting automatic I've ever driven. Especially coming out of her '03 Lincoln. It's amongst the worst shifting automatics I've driven.

JimmyH
05-05-10, 11:54 PM
That would be a conventional planetary automatic I believe. They only offer the DSG on the FSI turbo 4 (or at least the last time I checked). Speaking of which, that engine is a paradox. When I think of turbocharged 4-cylinders, I think turbo lag, no low end, rev-happy and lots of shifting. But it's the opposite with that engine. It has tons of low-end torque, an even stronger mid-range, no turbo lag to be found (especially amazing given it requires no cool-down) and the car will happily toodle around town in top gear. And even more amazing is the fact that it seems to run out of steam as you approach redline.

My step-dad bought his GTI shortly after I bought my V. It was a mind-blowing comparison. Here you had a small turbo dohc 4, with lots of low end grunt, and an unwillingness to charge to redline. And a big meaty pushrod V8 that wants to race past its near 7000 rpm redline, yet doesnt wake up until you reach 4000 rpm (where the V8s of yore used to redline :D) I kept having to pinch myself.

Gus_Mahn

IDK for sure. The salesman said it was DSG, and online search seems to support that. The TDI is a nice running car. Like you said about the gasser very good low end with really good mid and weaker on top, but the transmission is what stood out in my mind.

Yeah, kind of like my wait4me tune in which I was running lean, and 10 rwhp under stock. I wish. That was epic fail once I got on the dyno. What a waste of money.

BMW 335i juicebox tunes FTW.

The tune is from APR and the VW dealer in Evanston, IL is a liscensed distributor. You have to pay them to install it ($700 installed), but if you do they cover the car under warranty.

Real sorry to see you go Homie.....Wow....if there was anyone around here that I would miss, if they left, it would be you. Things change and all good things come to an end....but man....this sucks.
Ted, you are a "Front Row" great guy. I would like to say in public "Thank You" for all the private messages you've sent me over the last year that I've been on this forum, especially the ones in the early days. The ones of encouragement that said don't give up. In the early days no one trusted that we knew how to build a motor mount, they were raking me back and forth over the coals daily. You said "Don't listen to those nut sacks, just keep doing what you're doing". If it were not for you, I would not be here, true story.
If any of you guys reading this have our mounts (or will have any of our new parts to come) you have Ted to thank. Without him none of it would have happened. For me, around here, he was like that one teacher back in school that made a difference in your life. The one that you remember.

Thank You Ted, I will remember the name SKULLV for a very long time.

SkullV
05-06-10, 01:51 PM
Flogged the CRAP out of it. My first impressions are that the seats, steering wheel, and paddle shift control (DSG) are incredible. You definitely feel like you are attached to the car. I also REALLY enjoy the sport mode for the DSG. They really did it well, it WILL NOT shift until redline and holds the gear before it downshifts until you are in the sweet spot in the powerband for the lower gear, Like I said in an earlier post. It is not an upgrade, but not a downgrade either. It has things the V was missing and it is missing things the V had. I do miss the straightline speed though.

Nope, did that for 'us car guys', Ted ain't one of us anymore, he is more of weinerschnitzel now that he drives that FWD 1.6L (you can buy bigger soda bottles than that). I doubt she is washing a Jetta wagon, or any VW, as these are the kinds of females more associated with 'The Peoples Car':

She must have been in charge of bringing the keg,,,

I think the likelihood of a V3 is pretty low. But even though bigjim does not believe me, I predict the CTS3 at about 3100 lbs. rwd only. 3.0L or less NA, DI, about 240-250 hp. Those numbers should be good for sub 14 seconds. I bet if there is a V, if anything, it will be a turbo6.
