During high rpms the oil will mist inside the crankcase. The PCV system will pull some of that mist back into the intake. The catch can will de-mist the air and collect the oil. The catch can cannot hurt your motor.

so essentially since i get on it alot i would benefit from 1 ?

yes... PCV oil blow by lowers the octane of your fuel and leaves oil residue every where in the intake track

i just installed this one.. Matt and Jesse have this one too.. after seeing Matt's in person i decided to get it... it looks cheap in pictures but is actually really good quality

I have a much more expensive one that says 'AMW' on the top and is billet aluminum. Can't remember what web site I got it from but if you want me to look for the receipt, just PM me and I'll look for it.

I think I spent 20$ on one just like that from home depot, and another 10$ for hose/clamps....so that's actually a good deal if it comes with everything. Especially if it comes with a mounting bracket, I had to make my own out of flat stock.

As Will said, I like mine and have actually noticed some oil in it since I installed it. From what I've heard, it's more important for guys with forced induction, but can't hurt our engines either.

Will, you didn't end up getting the mamaluke catch can? That thing was HUUUGE.

WOW, that's a great price... i have an EXTREME on my LS-1 vette..last sat. i went to get it tweaked and dynoed and the tunner said catch cans are garbage and just a gimmick...and he bypassed it...I also have a DEVINCES FAN CONTROLLER and it works great...with my DEWITT radiator and the controller my temps are 185 max. instead of 238...He also told me that the fan controller was junk....On top of all this he said my vette that i have had for 4yrs. now,,which will run 10:50"s all day, is a mechanical nightmare, and he couldn't tune it...It is not CARTEK, but i am calling Max at Cartek and find out what could be wrong with my build...even though it hauls ass....ok, time for a beer,:alchi: i was geting off topic i know.....:duck:

I think at that price the only way to justify it is as an appearance mod...because it does the same damn thing as a water separator from home depot.

Sorry for the upside down shot. I got it from Custom Corvette Accessories (http://www.customcorvetteaccessories.com/oilcatchcan.html)

Yeah, I saw that Custom Corvette one and thought it was huge. I really liked the look of the AMW one and I guess it is somewhat of an appearance mod. It looks like it's stock after I filled in the bare 'AMW' on the lid with black paint. It also goes along with my airbrushed engine cover.

Please post some pics of your mountings. I picked this one up from Ebay and believe it or not it is pretty good quality. Can't figure a way to mount it yet.

Is there something inside the can to catch the oil vapor? Mesh or baffles? That's very important.

Is this the kind that destroys motors?

Why is that even needed? The vapors will condense to form a liquid on the bottom with or without the mesh.

Say what? A catch can is on my list of things to get - what have you read about them destroying motors?

Actually, now that I ask that question, I know I've read on another site that one should use the heavy duty stainless steel scrubby mesh (like so (http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Large-Scrubbing-Scrub/dp/B000BAV904)), and not fine steel wool, inside a catch can to ensure the tiny little fibers aren't carried over and sucked through the engine.

Why is that even needed? The vapors will condense to form a liquid on the bottom with or without the mesh.
Although some of the vapors may condense, there's no doubt that these sorts of catch cans become more effective with some sort of filtering material inside. My understanding is it makes the flow of vapors more turbulent, so the fine oil droplets are more likely to drop out of the airflow, and it gives way more surface area for those droplets to condense on.

Mine has long twisted metal strings inside it. The kind that come off of a lathe.
