I just had the valve cover gaskets, spark plugs and wires changed in my 97 Catera at my Cadillac dealer. Since I've had it back I am getting misfire errors in cylinder 5. No misfire problems before. What else would cause misfiring besides oil from leaking gaskets getting to spark plugs? Dealer wanted to remove the fuel injector to start troubleshooting. Took it in for no communication with MAF replaced ECM with used one "dealer said old ECM could not communicate with sensor (they wanted $1300.00 for new ECM)" then said had to replace sensor anyway. Told me of valve cover gasket leaks and oil soaked wires so I had the dealer replace them. Not sure how to take my dealers advice.
Thanks for any help,
Mike

Im assuming this is a model older than 1999?
Has anyone checked the coils? Is there oil in the plug boot (possibly again?)

It is a 1997. I asked the dealer if it could be the coilpack he said it is not the coilpack. I have not pulled the wire because I wasn't sure which cylinder was #5. New wires have numbers on them but two of them have 4 and two have 2 on them so I guess the tech didn't care to mark them correctly Only had the car one month and 2 weeks and $2000.00 of that it has been in the shop. Love the car but starting to regret buying it.
Thanks for help,

I believe #5 is the back cylinder on the drivers side.

Left out some info that might help. On drive home from dealer after reprogram of used ECM and install of new MAF CEL came on and I took it to Autozone to have read. It threw out codes P0300, P0301, P0302, and P0305. Guy at autozone said might just be stray codes left over from dealer work done so he cleared them. Since then I have only had code P0305 come up no misfires in other cylinders. Don't know if this might help but makes me wonder if it could be trash or something in fuel line.
Thanks,
Mike
