: 960 mile drive in a Mercedes S63 AMG...err.. rocketship

My Father is an auto enthusiast like most of us... he is a 16 year old trapped in a 58 year old body. He loves his cars and loves to change his 'stable' every year. Last year he bought my Mother a 2009 Jaguar XKR Convertible to replace her BMW 760Li. She thought she wanted a sporty coupe now that all the kids are grown... but after a year with the XKR.. she wanted to go back to a luxury barge.

I sold the XKR for them on eBay and I knew my Father was on the prowl for a replacement. I heard him talk about the new 750Li, the S65, the S63, Flying Spur, S8, Panamera S, and Arnage T. They live in Virginia Beach, VA... so there is no Bentley dealership for 190 miles... so that threw the Bentley out of the equation. They test drove the S63, S8, and Panamera S... they also wanted to drive a new Jaguar XJ Supersport-- but the dealers are on standby till June! Mom fell in love with the S class... she didn't like the ride of the S8 or Panamera S. Dad loved the Panamera S but didn't like the 4 seater arrangement. I suggested a A8 W12.. but there were none to be found locally.

.. to make a long story short; I get a call from Dad:

Dad: I bought a S63
Me: Awesome! From where?
Dad: The MB dealer near you
Me: Huh?

Three days later I am on my way to Loeber Mercedes to pick up a Certified Pre-owned S63 AMG! It is Iridium Silver Metallic with Black leather. It has the Pano Roof, Keyless Go, Rear seat package, Dynamic seats, Night vision, blah blah blah...

I moved the BMW out of the garage and made room for this beastly sedan... then I drove it to Virginia Beach on Saturday... what a drive! I made it in 14 hours and averaged 20 mpg... with an average speed of 72 mph.

In my garage (my neighbors must have thought I won the lottery):

Lunch in Pittsburgh:

On the road, 2200 rpm at 80 mph:

At its new home in Virginia Beach, all clean:

So.... yeah... WHAT A CAR! I read many things about the Active Body Control but to really experience it in the mountains of Pennsylvania was a joy! The Dynamic seats are.. um... neat... and follow you around the curves. This is supposedly the most powerful normally aspirated V8 in production.. and it shows! Going from 60 mph to 100 mph happened in a blink of an eye. From Pittsburgh, PA to Frederick, MD I followed a late model 911 Turbo, SRT8 300C, and E55 AMG... we were pulling triple digit runs when there was no traffic and the S63 pulled like a nothing I have experienced before. The power seemed endless and it was just warming up around 120 mph :tisk:

The seats.. amazing.. I stopped three times and didn't feel tired or have body ache at all.

What a machine! I can't praise this car enough. I can't imagine what the S65 feels like.

The exhaust note is addictive, it sound like a muscle car at idle and blip of the throttle.

Compared to their old 760Li, it has all the luxury with all the grunt of a sports car. It handles nicely too!

Compared to the XKR... it is worlds ahead in terms of gadgets.

Ahh, I am out of time.. time to head to work and get in my lowly BMW

Take care,
Elias

I hate you. Great cars are fun to drive.............You should have detoured over the Bay Bridge, had a brew, and headed down 50/13 to VaBeach.

Elias, have you ever gone downstate and picked up Interstate 64. I used it going to Decatur and found it to be a pretty ride and great way to by bypass all the traffic around D.C. and Northern Virginia. Takes you right into Virginia Beach.

I did that once.. I went down to Indianapolis and then shot over to KY, WV, and then VA via 64. I went to UVA so I know those roads well, it is a beautiful drive.

My lowly S320 had nothing on this magnificent piece of teutonic engineering. It's funny, the W140's V12 was 389 hp (except for '92, it was 402), but I'm sure that'd seem like a pooch compared to these, or heck even a current S550.

Very, very nice! I could only dream of driving one of these.

God what fun! i would love to roll that beast 900miles! Mercedes is no joke nowadays, all wolfs in sheep clothing cars. We drove my wifes kia spectra like 2300k miles round trip, that was a pain with no cruise control haha.

Why would you drive through Michigan to get from Chicago to Virginia Beach? (unless you were getting gas in Michigan City, IN)

Because I had breakfast with a friend in Berrien Springs.

Drove a fairly new S65 last summer, fantastic luxo-barge. What did your mom not like about the XKR...Lack of amenities, ride too rough, not enough space?

I don't get the changing cars every few months deal. I find a car I love and drive it for years. I love the cars, not the chase...

Sometimes she had business associates come into town and they had to buy a Town Car for that purpose. She found herself driving the TC more and the Jaguar sat in the garage. They are shipping the TC to their overseas home and the S63 can now serve an everyday purpose.

I don't get the changing cars every few months deal. I find a car I love and drive it for years. I love the cars, not the chase...That tends to be the case with me as well.

More than a year since I bought the Seville, I can answer the question, "When you turn your car on, does it return the favor?" with an enthusiastic "Yes!"

And of course, driving Betty almost always puts a smile on my face. But she's a special case.

Still, I can't blame Elias' parents for trying lots of different cool cars. Obviously, they can afford it. I know if I suddenly won the lottery (not too bloody like since I don't even play), I'd have to build a huge garage for my collection of classic ('65 Riviera GS, '65 Corvette Sting Ray, '68 Eldorado, '64 Eldorado and/or Fleetwood, '68 GTO, '69 Grand Prix, '60 300F, '68 Charger R/T among others) and current cars (C6 Corvette, CTS, CTS-V, G8 GT, Miata, Camaro SS, M3).

My Father and I suffer from 'vehicular ADD.' He has 11 photoalbums full of pics of the cars he has owned since he came to the USA in 1976.

I hope to have own as many cool cars ... if not more

Looking over the pics again, the S63 makes the Town Car look like a dwarf!

You lucky SOB... Ugh I want one of these SOOO bad... One day I'll strike it rich... I love this body s class.. IMHO the Jag (a beautiful car) is ugly compared to this MB.

I'm not a modern-era MB fan (still have a love/hate thing going with the Crossfire, which I've been driving lately since its raining) but the current S-class is in a class of its own on luxury and comfort. They look odd to me though, like Ford Focuses that got stretched.

I'm usually happy to play automotive switcharoo as long as I have another keeper that sticks around. For a while it was the old STS, but it as it ages and reaches the end of its useful life (tranny going out at 190k) the Saab with only 106k will take its place.

My stepdad bought his 2004 LX470 new and now has 290,000 miles.

Your father is the same... Yet the complete opposite of mine, all wrapped up in one - he too enjoys getting vehicles, albeit one's that are "new to him." I had never seen him buy a brand new car until I was out of school and even then, they've pretty much only been for a new "family" car, ie - my mother (probably where I learned/received my same aversion to new).

I'd most likely crap my pants if he ever called and said he made a purchase like that! The last time he called up all giddy like was this past fall when he had managed to swindle a little old lady out of a mint '93 long-bed 4.3L S10 with something like 18,000 miles for an equally ridiculous low price... I forget exactly, but I recall it was definitely under $2500. Needless to say, he was quite smitten with himself.

Either way, congrats to your dad on his new car (and to you for getting to drive it ;) ). While it definitely isn't my cup of tea, I will at least admit it's one hell of a car... However, I do cringe at the mere thought of that monthly payment/invoice price!

so, what does/did your dad do for a living? (if you can call new luxury cars every year and an overseas home a living)

Dad is a Nuclear Engineer for the US Navy, he retires next year after 33 years. My Mother runs their two businesses (Deli and wholesale foods).

He has always loved cars, even when he was working his way up the ladder he still found time to have a few toys here and there while providing for our family.

Since I bought the Collectors Edition Trans Am Convertible from him, he has been looking for a replacement. It is currently enroute to him from Detroit, MI. It is a 2009 Indy 500 Pace Car Corvette convertible, 1 of 30 made:

I hope he likes it! He drove a 2010 3LT Convertible with the LS3/6 speed auto and loved it.

He hated his '07 Z06.. but he made the mistake of trying it as a daily driver. That car was too brutal to be driven in stop and go traffic... but was the perfect weekend track car. He sold it after 800 miles of use but still broke even:

This '09 does not have the Z51 suspension, so it should be a smooth ride.
