I've been real anxious to test drive an SRX ever since I saw a bunch of parked ones in Illinois. They look great imo

It seems like you test drive a lot of cars. Do the dealers mind when you just pop in to take a test drive?

LOL, actually I normally don't test drive alot of cars. but my lease is up on my SLS soon and for the first time I really dont know what i want. So over the last few months I've pretty much test driven every car $45k+ there is. Its been rather exhausting and I'm still no closer to an answer.

Get a beamer 745... and if you want an SUV, get an EXT.

I definitely want to test drive the XLR, not that I can afford it...

What is your top 3 right now?? I love the look of the 745's, jawdropping. But then again, if reliability scares you how reliable was your SLS and will you be leasing your new vehicle or purchasing?

You could of course be one of the first people with the SRX...

745
X5
SRX

Keep in mind I've only seen the SRX never driven, so it could fall out of there quick.

My SLS has been very reliable, i had one warranty repair in 35,000 miles.

I will definitely lease my next car. Mainly for the advantageous tax benefits thru my company.

My wife wants me to get an SUV, if it were up to her it would be X5, up to me 745, so we'll see how the SRX is and go from there.

I drove a FX45 and loved it. You might like it too.
How did you like the Toureg? It's gotten a lot of good press. I would stay away from the GM trucks. Depending on the outcome of my latest trip to the GMC dealer, we maybe dumping the Denali VERY soon. I've always disliked the GM trucks, eventhough I was always a diehard GM buyer. The few I've had experience with were trash. They don't hold up over time. The drivetrains aren't too bad but the chassis suck.
Our Denali promised to be a "win you back to GM" vehicle. I REALLY wanted to love this truck. Unfortunately, it has proven to be no better than past GM trucks I've had. Damn shame really. This thing spends more time in the dealer than my driveway it seems. I really think the problem is twofold;
1. Poor choice of materials and poor assemblies cause this truck to squeak, creak, and rattle terribly.
2. GM doesn't REALLY want to provide a "LUXURY" car feeling in their trucks. Dealers do everything but come right out and say "come on, it's a truck" when you complain about comfort/convenience issues and noises.
The next question is who makes the best FULL-Size SUV?
I might look at a Navagator but really think I'm gonna head over to Lexus. I want a truck that can do "truck stuff" and still provide a quiet and solid luxury car-like ride.

Brett
07-22-03, 12:52 PM
Yeah, the FX45 and Q45 are basically the last ones on my list, I just havent gotten down to that dealer yet, basically because its the farthest away.

I'd like to stay with GM because I've always been a GM man, but they are making it hard to do that.

The Toureg was great, I'm sure it will be a huge seller for VW. The interior is a bit busy, but in materials and style it is way ahead of GM. When you consider the price of the Cayenne the toureg becomes a real bargain as well

I would go with the 745 because it is by far the coolest looking car I've seen, very nicely styled, great interior, and if you're leasing it...It can't hurt you because you'll be under warrantee if anything mechanical goes wrong. I've driven a 2001 X5 and while I liked the interior features, but I wasn't that impressed with the driving experience. But then again, I think the newer model x5's are much different and I didn't drive the bigger engine model.
Damn, you have a very desirable dilemna on your hands...Let us know what you pick!

Brett
07-22-03, 01:03 PM
Forgot, I did test drive a Navigator as well, and it does have some cool gizmos(automatiac rear door, retractable running boards). But I didnt like it overall, the interior was nice to look at, but the materials were pretty subpar, and compared to the escalade it had no power.

Full size I'd go LX470, its costs a bit more, but that disadvantage is erased when you trade it in.

Thats what my wife tells me, basically to stop whining and pick a car. Because basically they are all pretty good.

The X5 I drove was a modified one with an estimated 320hp, 282 is stock i believe. So a regular X5 might not be as fun, but this one was alot more exciting to drive than the 7

I don't know why, I don't like SUV's in general compared to sedans because I can't get used to the height and I feel like they're going to tip on me.

Brett

I'm definitely more of a sedan guy myself. The only thing I like about SUV's is the ease of getting in and out. AWD is pretty useless in Tampa. There have been some times recently where i could have used the extra cargo space, thats mainly why I've been looking at SUV's at all, plus my wife likes them alot.

It started to rain a bit when i drove the 7, so it was hard to get true X5 vs. 7 comparo

X5 in a nutshell:
Nice looking, rough riding, SMALL, and EXPENSIVE.

That's the one thing that the GM trucks have in their favor. POWER. However I don't care for the calibration of the trans.
You're probably right about the LX470. I like the RX 330 but I'm afraid it's a little small for my needs. Don't they have something in between the two?

Brett
07-22-03, 03:26 PM
GX470

Its very nice. Probably a good compromise between the RX and LX. Basically its the size of a 4runner, but with 5" more headroom. I think it bases around 47k, probably 52-55 by the time you pick your options. VERY smooth ride when in comfort mode, and ok handling in sport mode. Same engine as LX so you dont give anything up there.

I dont know, you've mentioned the FX45 a number of times in other threads, i would think if thats your fav, any Lexus probably wont work for you.

It wouldn't be my truck anyways. The Denali is my wifes ride. I really don't like driving trucks that much, although I DID LOVE my '95 Bronco.

I liked the FX45 but probably wouldn't buy one because even though it's a HOT looker, and has good power, I think it's over-priced for what you get. That is unless looks and a sports car feel is all you're looking for. That it delivers. The loaded one that I drove (and would probably buy if I did), rode quiet but very tight so unless you're on smooth roads, you're ride is a little rough. Still quiet, but rough. On top of that, I was surprised to see the passenger seat had only minimal adjustments. Not the same as the drivers. And no rear heated seats. So for 53K and change, I though it was a little high priced. Probably good for mid 40s at most as far as I'm concerned.
Damn GM, if their trucks were just built better.....
That Denali was absolutely the nicest FULL size SUV I'd ever driven when it was new. Smooth as hell, powerful, all the toys, lots of room, and HOT LOOKING! Well at least I should get a good trade in for it (it's paid off) since the exact same truck brand new is 52K.

Well I've got pretty high hopes for the SRX, since its on the Sigma platform maybe it will be better than a normal GM truck. The thing is I got ~3000 in gm card cash so that should make the SRX a pretty good buy. I got my fingers crossed, my dealers gonna call me when they get their first one

Yeah well, I had high hopes for the GM800 platform. It was the best and newest when our Denali came out. Right out of the box, it was a huge improvement over its predecessor but, over the 2+ years we've had it, it's just gotten progressively worse. This latest trip to the dealer was last Thursday. I took a tech out for a drive and made sure he witnessed all my complaints but when I called an hour ago, the service writer told me that they have only readjusted the rear hatch glass. They have not fixed anything else yet. I told him that I was coming tomorrow to get it regardless of what condition it is in and if I'm not happy, IT'S GONE!! I told him the next time he sees it, it will be under new ownership. I've had it with that truck and GMC. I've got a file about an inch thick with repair orders and letters back and forth to GMC customer service, and I'm going to send copies to GM corporate along with a picture of us and our NEW TRUCK. Not like they care I'm sure anyway.

1 Question, and please don't take it the wrong way.

Would you consider yourself a perfectionist? easy going?
I ask because I'm a pretty easy going guy, and I wonder if the problems you've had aren't really that terrible, but you just want it to be perfect.

Keep in mind if thats the case, I think you have every right to have it perfect for spending 50k+ on a truck, I'm just wondering if an "easy-going" person might not be so bothered

AWD is pretty useless in Tampa.

I've been in some of your monsoons. AWD gives you traction in wet too.

I had a Subaru Legacy GT Wagon. The only time I'd race a V8 was when it was wet off the line or even more fun, wet around a corner! The way I had it set up, I'd could lead people into a trouble on dry freeway changes at high speed. (You just shouldn't tailgate!)

Out of the cars you listed, on paper and in the style department, I prefer the FX too. I read that the 6 cylinder was a better balanced car/truck/sport wagon, whatever it is. The Taureg looks interesting. I just haven't read enough about it or seen one in person.

Brett

Well to people that grew up here I would guess AWD would help them in the wet, but I lived in Illinois for 28 years before I moved here. I always drove RWD. So a little rain is no big deal.

My brother used to have an all wheel drive honda civic hatchback that he would absolutely beat on. He could drive the thing in a foot of snow and go places that a normal person in a truck wouldn't. Needless to say it died quick because of misuse but that thing could go anywhere with a set of hocapolita 10 snowtires.
