I own a 1997 cadillac deville, the other day I went out to my
car and noticed that the headlights were on. This is odd since
the car has automatic headlights (the headlight knob was still
in the off position). I had to have the car jump started and
thought that the problem must be that the light sensor for the
auto headlights was faulty or dirty. Alas once the caddy was
jump started I was unable to turn off the headlights! I
discovered that one of the relays (the low beam) was smoking. I
removed the relay and the headlights went out. I removed the
relay for the horn (which is the exact same part number as the
one that was burnt) and put it into the headlamp slot and the
lights did not work. I purchased a new relay and that didn't
work as well, but if I put the burnt one back in the lights come
on and the relay starts to smoke. The only other symptom I can
see is that the highbeams will come on but will not stay on
unless I hold the directional in place. What could be the
problem??? Also I have replaced the headlight switch and the problem still exists.

First of all, there's (3) relays for your headlamps;
One Headlamp relay (relay 'A')
One High/Low Beam control relay (relay 'C')
One Daytime running lamp relay (relay 'F')
So first, we have to figure out what relay is smoking.

I don't know which relay it was. It is located in the maxi fuses/ relay center located on the engine compartment fuse block on the drivers sinde of the engine block. If you look at the diagram in the owners manual (p. 6-60) it was the relay located just a little right of center (on the diagram) labeled HEAD LPS.
My lights are now working although the headlights only turn on when the twilight sentinel is activated. If I pull on the knob the driving lights illuminate but not the head lights.
