: I bought yet another wagon.. euro this time..

I loved my '98 Mark VIII, especially after the modifications... but I needed a bigger vehicle with the home revisions we are making this spring/summer. I started looking at Tahoes, Escalades, etc etc... then I found out a Cardiologist I worked with was getting ready to trade his '99 BMW 528iT in on a new X5.....

... this is a 1 owner vehicle with impeccable service history! Garage kept all its life. Luckily I consulted him on a patient of mine and got to run into him later that week. To make a long story short.. I gave him $200 more than the dealer offered and walked away with a mint 528iT wagon! It even had a new Transmission placed at the BMW dealership 10-2009 for almost as much as I paid for it!

The wagon was pretty bland when I bought it... so I had to make a few changes. Here it is in stock form last month:

And one month later with: M5 front bumper, M5 fog lights, M5 Angel eye HIDs.....

The nice thing is all the maintenance is up to date.. so I can jump into modifications right away! I have already ordered H&R coilovers and M5 wheels... so it should be ready for summer in a month or so. I love this wagon! I am getting 20.8 mpg in the city and so far have bought a Patio furniture set and BBQ grill without having to borrow someone's SUV or truck!

As for the Mark VIII... I sold it to a police chief who is a enthusiast, so it went to a good loving home.

Take care,
Elias

I was just replying to your email this morning...but to make it short, I love this thing:cool:

One of the best driving cars period, but with the utility of a wagon. Add on the M5 touches you're doing (man of my heart, good move) and it's really cool. Can't wait to see with the M5 wheels too, on that color. You're always one for right deals at the right time. Good one!

Very nice! I have always wanted a BMW wagon. I love the M5 touches as well cant wait to see the wheels on there.

Wow, really nice looking car, and if you purchased it for just 200$ more than the price that dealer was paying (Trade in price), I should say it was a great deal and even an steal!

I do love BMW and Benz, but still I am not rich enough to keep one (I can buy one, but maintaining it in top condition is another story). That transmission story warns how costly this car can be. BMW is in my hot lost car that I should own one before I get 40th. :D

Yep! And I am loving every minute that I drive it!

It is my fifth German vehicle though (560 SEL, 944 S2, 944 Turbo, Passat).

Very nice car. I have to laugh because my clients don't have such nice rides. Last year I bought an 02 Dodge Dakota with 92K miles from one of them. It's a good chore truck, but not nearly as nice as your grocery getter.

Nice wagon Elias. Glad to hear my Mark VIII went to an enthusiast. I would have liked to hear it with the mods you did. The BMW is pretty sweet. Like the mods you did!:cool2:

Nice wagon, and a proper BMW to boot, back before they got all "weird".

So is it a manual or auto? That M5 front clip looks awesome BTW.

I wish it was a manual.. or a 540iT sport.. but it was a good deal that I couldn't pass up.

I didn't know the e39 wagons had such a following. Here are a few examples that took my breath away:

I dunno what I'd rather have....E46 330Xi or E39 540i... The 540i is bigger, faster & more powerful, but the 330Xi has the crucial AWD for the MN winters & is a better driving car, but it's hard to beat an E39. Elias, how does that 2.8L feel in that wagon?

96Fleetwood
03-29-10, 10:57 AM
I did drive a 2002 325xi with 58K.. it was ok, but the interior felt very cheap compared to the e39 5 series.

The 2.8 liter does the job. It gets reasonable gas mileage in the city, but is a slug with the slushbox auto. On the highway it really sings, especially at autobahn speeds. It probably feels similar to the 3.2 liter in your S320. If it had the manual it would be more fun in the lower gears.

Yeah, that's a lot of car for a little 2.8 liter to push around; especially with an automatic transmission. While I love the idea of a station wagon that handles, having had an Audi Avant with an automatic I would not want to experience that cars performance again. Aside from the Audi's reliability issues its' lack of alacrity was a sore point. So the car will do 100 MPH all day long, if it gets out paced by ten speed bicyclist at a stoplight in the city it gets old preety quick. Trouble with European cars with automatic transmissions is there sluggishness. If you can't afford the "big" engine they are not worth the price!

I would have bought a 540iT .. but for the price I snagged this 528iT for.. I just couldn't say no.

Cadillac announced the V version of the Sport Wagon today to be available later this year. That will be a wagon with about 550hp and 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds.
BTW, we had one of the last Mark VIIIs (LSC purchased new February '99) with a Mark VII before it and a LS after. The VIII is probably my favorite car of all cars owned over 50 years.

Sweet! I will buy one in the near future. I want to pay off my med school loans before I make a big purchase like that.

Now there's something I wish I could follow:thumbsup:

About that...hmm...

Again, great choice in cars. Love these things. What's the real world day in, day out maintenance and upkeep like on a now 10 year old BMW? Newer ones can be nightmares, but something like this E39? Yours is a good example of having been maintained properly, which is most important.

You should also consider replacing the silver trim along the windows with shadowline (black) trim.

Yep, sounds just like the S320. Kind of a slug around town, but once up around 80mph, it was as happy as could be, and pretty quick too!

Is the wagon that much slower than the sedan? My friend used to have a 2000 (I believe) 528i and it was pretty quick.

Sedan is 0-60 in 7.5 and Wagon is 0-60 in 7.8 secs (both auto).

At least I have the Trans Am and M45 for power trips...

Maintenance can be expensive; mainly sensors and suspension parts. The engine is pretty much bulletproof in these cars (2.8L that is). The tranny is a GM 4 speed auto...

Oh that's not too bad at all. My 0-60 for the S320 was 8.7 seconds. For the GS, it's 6.7 seconds. Talk about a big difference!

What's that wagon weigh?

6 months of ownership have passed by very quickly... didn't think I would own it this long but it has really become one of my favorite rides. I sometimes wish it was a 540iT.. until I look at how reliable and efficient the 6 cylinder is.

It looks friendly, yet evil. I agree with you on the motor -- BMW's inline six is something special, and even if its less power than a 540, its more pleasing to feel and hear.

Yeah black out the windows, I'm thinking maybe 20% all the way around. That's dark enough for people not to see your stuff, and looks like about the same tint found on SUV's.

I agree.. I was thinking 15-20%.

Jesda, you hit it right on the money.. these 6 cyl BMW motors are so silky smooth. They have a sweet spot in the power band about 1,100 rpm from the redline. I have a lead foot and I am still getting ~20 mpg in the city.
