Start checking the water pump, and powersteering pump...any one of those could cause a "throbbing sound". Turn the vehicle on, and ear in to their locations and see what you hear. Does this sound happen all the time, or does it happen during certain times, and if so.. when?
I found an engine on ebay from a company: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7904791081&category=33615&sspagename=WD1V
$1004 + shipping and a $300 core charge.
There are rebuild kits available if you look around...

$1000 for a Cimarron engine? Thats more than the car itself is worth :p
Just go find an old Chevy Cavalier and get the engine from it. They're indentical to the Cimarron so they should work together.

I suggest looking for a 3.1 from an early 90's Cavalier or Beretta. Much more reliable, smoother, and gobs more hp and tq than what you might be looking for. It should fit right in, since Cavaliers had the same basic chasis from '79-'93.
I purchased a Cimarron new in 1984 and the engine had to be replaced 3 times was a problem from day 1
