: 2007 88k engine noise at startup

I have a 2007 with engine noise when you first start it up in the morning. It has been making this noise for a bout 40k miles. It seems to quiet down after running for a lil while. I have been told by the service manager at my local dealership that there was a new lifter coming out and they would fix it when they received the new parts. After months and months of waiting on the new lifters i was then told that they were not doing that . Now they have had the truck for the last two weeks and say they are putting in a new oil pump and o-ring. I think its kinda shady how they have put me off basically for almost 40k miles saying its a lifter problem and now they say the pump is going to fix it. This escalade now has 88k and is getting closer and closer to being outta warranty without being fixed. I am picking it up later this morning and hope its fixed but honestly kinda doubt it .. I did call cadillac customer service and raise a lil hell about the problem and they have gotten involved with it now also.

ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM???

Yea.. mine does it too. I was told that it is piston slap and a common problem just to ignore it. It is a scary and very annoying problem for a 65 to 80K truck to have.. Let us know how it goes for you!

gm is notorious for a "cold start knock" i have an 07 ext and mine knocks until it gets warmed up......i think im gonna try heavier weight oil when i get the oil changed.....

Its piston slap changing 5-30 to 10-30 mobile one helped a bit its a gm thing.:bigroll:It goes away when warmed up when engine parts have expanded and clearance is less hope this helps.

Its also a ford and Dodge thing to. They all do it no matter what brand.

I started up my cousin's 2006 Ford Explorer limited with the 4.6L V8 engine, and it "ticked" just like my Escalade does on cold mornings.

It bothers me too, but what can you do if the damn dealer say it's normal?

my 07 is doing this too. Theres another thread about this piston slap problem, I had never heard of this issue for GM engines until my 07 started doing it this winter AFTER i changed the oil from what the dealer had in it when i bought it. I put 10-30 mobil1 and then i noticed it sounded like a clangy diesel when its cold. its F*#$% annoying and sounds terrible. Anyone who says this is normal for all brands, it IS NOT. I have owned 4 ford with 5.4v8, including navigator. Also owned a Dodge and driven a few other Hemi rams. i have never heard a gasoline engine sound like this. I am P'd off that my 07 soudns like this at only 40k. Dealer wont even admit it is the piston slap issue. I will try 5-30 oil but isnt it bad to run 5-30 in the summertime? If this truck was under the 30 day ownership I would be taking it back to the dealer, saying FU and heading out to pick up an X5 or Navigator. Has anyone had any luck at all dealing with this or fixing it? Or is it just ANOTHER "live with it" problem?

No argument here and it may not be Normal, but it is Common.
I never really knew about it until I got my 07 .. did it from the beginning.
And since at least 07 has been discussed quite a bit here.
I think mostly because it's more prevelent since 07 with the 403 HP.
Do a Google search for Piston Slap and it is wide spread from way before 07.
The engine bore and piston are machined to a + - tolerance and GM used to check each piston with each bore to get the best fit.
Now, they just throw them in and let the chips fall where they may.
Some pistons are at the small diameter tolerance and get put into a bore that happens to be at the larger tolerance diameter.
So until the piston heats up, .. it slaps against the side of the bore.
Another reason for the noise is the pistons in the higher HP motors have a short shirt, allowing them to twist and shake more until warmed and expanded.
Is it annoying,.. Yes :annoyed:
Is it really a problem and will the engine blow up or something, not very common but that's another topic.
You'll find there are lots of engines with piston slap and unless it stays loud all the time, it's not considered a problem.
Right or wrong, thats pretty much GM's stance :suspense:
There have been a few on this forum that brought their's to the Dealer and had a new motor put in.
But nothing says the new motor is any different than the one taken out considering they way they are built.
Mine, like many others it louder at the start in Cold weather.
And cold or warm out, it's quiet after warm up.
All I know is mine runs like a Bear and I'm not about to go to a Dealer and have them Rip everything apart.
Again, I agree, it does suck having this noise and not trying to convince anyone otherwise.
Strictly My Opinion and some info. ;)

Well my 07 is at the dealership right now and i guess we will hear back soon about what they say about it....whats weird is how it happens once we change the oil from the oil that was put in at the dealership. Im just curious what oil are they using?? or do they use an additive in there...
It is a annoying and embarresing problem...:s but im not sure i would want them ripping it apart and installing a new engine. like some people say" once its apart, it never goes back the same"

ill let you guys know what they tell me

I just had my 07 EXT ripped apart well the bottom end anyway. They replaced all pistons rings rods etc. This was done under warranty. Cause was pistons not within spec. Truck is quite now warm or cold.

so i went to the dealership with the piston slap and after being there over night they called me and said they couldnt hear anything..(haha ya ok!)..so i stormed down to the dealer and when i picked it up i told the supervisor to get in with me and lets go for a ride...right away there was the gross knocking sound..."how can u not hear that" i said...this is wat he said..."yup its piston slap and it does soound like ccrap..but this is normal" we argued it out and in the end told me its not noisy enouph to be fixed (still under warrenty) and also stated that i can take the risk and they will take it apart...BUT!!...if the pistons are within the clearence specs i will have to pay the bill for them removing the pistons and check...he said around 5000 plus dollars..
what am i at the casino gambleing here....
i dont know what else to do...this is the 3rd time ive taken it into them and its really bad piston slap

You are 100% correct. I've had piston slap issues for some time now and was first told they could not reproduce the noise, then as it got louder I was told it's normal. GM won't lift a finger to make any improvement however, if we continue to buy from them. And I am all for supporting our countries economy by buying American. But they have to meet consumers half way and at least ditch the ancient OHV engine. They are not the only manufacturers to offer a full sized suv. I had my eye on the new QX56 but radiation concerns have we reticent. Mercedes has improved the GL's reliability based on what I've seen on line. Range Rover is worse than the escalade and that's saying alot. The Navigator is dated, I saw one parked at walmart while walking in and tookmy time to really see the vehicle. Next options would be the X5 or the Sequoia.
