Hey guys!

we are heading to Detroit again and will be there the week of March 8th. (next week). We are staying in a hotel in Romulus, MI. (near the airport).

Any suggestions on nice places to visit, eat, go for drinks, etc?

Last time we were there (spetember 2009) we had a really good time! Went to the MGM Casino and drove around the city. We also visited the (used to be) Fiero assembly plant in Flint. Detroit is not as bad as people make it out to be. People were actually really nice. :)

Any input is appreciated!

cheers!

Yeah, definitely check out the Henry Ford museum and Greenfield Village. Both were very cool and the Ford museum is about much, much more than just Fords. It has just about every technological innovation in there.

Odd that such a big city and not all that much to do?

4.) get a rental car and take out the full boat insurance
5.) get out to the suburbs as soon as possible
6.) take the tunnel to Windsor, come back, and then do #5....

nope, wont do at all. even the Suburbs are swarming with Raptors. the whole damn Detroit are is just a giant raptors nest.. best to just leave the whole place well enough alone..

Please define "Raptor" as it applies to the sign from the Board of Health City of Detroit sign. I don't get it either!

sign is photoshopped. fake.

for example, the 'P' in raptor is actually an 'R' with part of the sign background pasted over the lower right leg of the R.

If you're a nerdy white guy, don't try to make friends at the night club across the street from the Sheraton at the COBO...

Just got to Detroit. Nice suburbs. High speed limits!

The speed limits aren't any higher. People just ignore them more. As you get closer to Detroit, the traffic get denser and the speeds get higher. Attempting to drive 696, 275, or the Lodge at the posted speed limit will get your run over.

Be sure to slow down as you get out-state because the same rules don't apply.

We're talking about Detroit MICHIGAN right?

Your speed limits are so much higher. Around here, 55mph on the highway. Detroit, 75. Major win.

It's 75 through North Dakota too, atleast on I-94. Minnesota has 70MPH through most of I-35, but 65MPH most everywhere else.

In Virginia we have 55 mph speed limits on may roads that should be 45 mph and 65 mph on Interstates used by out of state drivers. I'm kind of suspicious of this having to do with state legislators wanting to get home to their districts in the sticks quickly, while not forgetting the excellent revenue source that the Interstates provide from out of state drivers (what State Trooper in his right mind is going to give a ticket or even stop a legislator's car with "special" plates a ticket!).

However, the Old Dominion pales in this regard when Delaware is taken into account; not only does Delaware have toll booths at every 100 feet but the speed limit is 55 mph!

The drive from Chicago to Southfield was quick. 75-80mph the whole way, and people were still passing me. There were some pretty terrible stretches of highway here and there, so I guess they expect you to do the speeds at your own peril.

I wish there was daylight because I was near some beautiful lakeside towns (not Gary Indiana).

GM's Ren Cen is an overrated barren place. They even closed off the GM car display which didnt even have anything special to look at. I can go see a Lucerne at a Buick dealer. Pathetic.

Ford's Rouge factory tour was AWESOME.

Coney dogs FTW. I'm a fan of Lafayette's. Will save American Coney for next time.

The very small crowds are great for cheap parking and easy access to restaurants. I feel safer here than in some parts of St Louis. The misery is present and vast, but exaggerated.

Are you in Detroit now?

I'm leaving for Detroit tomorrow night. Should be there Monday morning. Driving at night to avoid all the traffic. :)

I'm staying in southfield 10-15 min from downtown. Leaving tomorrow night after the chrysler museum. Too bad the motown museum is closed sunday -- they retained all the original recording equipment and you get to see barry's upstairs apartment.

I'm in a crappy neighborhood right now eating excellent mexican food. Seemed safe enough to park on the street though, tons of people.

The chrysler museum was sad. Will post pics when I get home tonight.

Well we are in Detroit!

we are at the Crown Plaza hotel. Not as nice as I was hoping.... but it's clean and will do! We're starving! I'm off to find a nice place to eat in the area.

Cheers!

W/ chili would be a Detroit coney. With hamburger meat and less sauce would be a Flint coney.

I figured a Flint coney would be made with ketchup and rabbit meat.

If you want to make the drive there's a lot of good places in the Royal Oak area, about 30 minutes north of you if you're in Romulus.
