: 03 STS using 1qt oil every 800mi - Should I be worried?

Hey everybody, I'm more of an electical guy and don't know much about head gaskets, blocks, and such, but my wife's 03 STS with 79k on it seems to be going through more and more oil. It's down to about 800 miles between the dash message saying "Check Oil Level", at which time I just drop another quart of 5W30 in it. The car runs fine, doesn't drip and doesn't smoke, and I don't see any oil in the coolant tank, so I figure it must be burning the oil a little at a time. My last car was an 04 DTS with even more mileage than this STS, and I could go 2-3k between adding oil, so assuming that both engines never had any overhauls done to them, I wonder why the DTS did great and the STS is so poor? Anyway, is there an easy way to tell what's causing this, such as head gasket, cracked block, etc, and is this something I should be concerned about at this point? I really don't want to spend a few thousand on a head job or replacement engine. I just use "regular" 5W30 oil in it - not synthetic, hi-mileage oil etc. If there's something I can/should be doing in the meantime, I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! Doug

your car is normal. and you will actually get 1600 per Check oil level message if you filled it correctly.
when the check oil level message shows you are TWO QUARTS low... not one.
also take the car from your wife and drive the shit out of the car. rev the snot out of it ( under load obviously)
your car does not need to be babied... if it is you will have more issues then you would if you drive the car like a 16 year old who just got his lisence!
also its not so much about the model of car.. they are both identical engines.. its just the DTS probably had a man driving it who likes to thrash it around.

enjoy :)

Go to the top left of the page and click on Technical Archives. Read up on "oil consumption" and "full throttle acceleration is good for your car" (or something like that).
