i know the switch could be bad and have ordered a new one, but what if that wasn't the problem, i checked for power on both sides of the plug end and have none, the cruise works fine(i.e. comes off when brakes are applied) i guess i am asking if a relay could be bad and if so which one is it. thanks, brian...btw, it;s a 97 catera
I have the same problem, just wonder if you fixed it. Trying to find out what relay is failured. skoums@yahoo.com

If the cruise control is still operation correctly I would venture to say that it isn't the switch. If it were the switch the cruise control would probabaly not operate corectly. Just a thought.

I have the same problem, my brake lights don't work and I have checked all fuses and I was told that it could be, is some kind of switch under by the brake pedel. I just to lazy to get under there and check. lol but I did call autozone and they list the part for $25.

My son owns a 1999 and has the same problem. The cruise control works but not the brake lights. He will be picking up a switch on Monday but I'm not convinced that the switch would solve the problem. I'm thinking a relay of some sort. Anyone solve this problem or have additional ideas? :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
Thanks

I removed the plug from the brake light switch and plugged a new switch into the plug. Presto we now have brake lights.
I am a bit confused as to why folks reference the cruise control as working or not working to determine if the brake light switch is okay. From what I have seen, there is a Cruise Release Switch (positioned below the stop light switch). The stop light switch has no control over the cruise control system.
Anyway, the dealer charged 33.57 plus tax for the stop light switch. Part#90563455. GMPartsDirct.com cost 14.79 + 7.95 shipping. :vomit:
