My vinyl has some scratches. Not cracks or deep gouges, but just surface scratches that have taken the color off (dash, vinyl on rear of front seats, etc...). I was wondering if anyone has used those vinyl paints/dyes and if anyone had any luck with them. I'm thinking I'd have to re-spray the whole piece since the color out of the can isn't going to match the weathered color in my interior. Thoughts?

When I done the 99 GMC Envoy console in my S10 Xtreme the consloe was tan andI needed it to be graphite. I got the dye mixed at the local PPG automotive paint store. I took my old ash tray with me because after they mixed it according to the book it was off a few shades so they tinted it to match. I scuffed the pieces with a scotchbrite pad and wiped them down with wax and grease remover then sprayed them with Bulldog adheasive promoter then sprayed them with the dye 2 coats. It dried very quick. it's been 3 years and still looks new. The hidaway cupholders rub it in one spot that is the only place the tan can be seen. The leather shifter handle is showing some wear they had a additive for the leather but I didn't get it because of only having one small leather piece and I knew that I could order a grand prix handle in the correct color. I am very happy with this dye compared to the cheap dye in the spray cans and they made it match 100%.
Hope this helps.

For basic colors the aerosol isn't so bad though.I have one car I did 13 yrs ago and it still looks good. The cleanliness and a lack of humidity are essential for success though. I'm on the verge of completion having changed the entire interior in my 80 and changing the color as well. I'm my own worst critic, and I'd have to say you'd be hard pressed to tell the interior wasn't black from the factory. However, the prep and detail time to do it right was almost beyond human reason. All summer.
