Hey guys,

Did a search but couldn't come up with anything concrete, I'm just wanting your opinion - What oil do you rate when it comes to old tech motors, specifically the 429ci caddy motor?

In most climates, 10W30 or 10W40 are fine. Just make sure your oil has enough ZDDP, or use an additive.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You can get the ZDDP in GM EOS. Available online, or at any dealer.

Cheers! And your thoughts on mineral vs semi synthetic vs synthetic?

Unless you race mineral is adequate.

Synthetics and semi-synthetics would be recommendable if you use the car as a daily commuter. But being that it's a '67 I would guess (hope) that the car would be used on nice weekends and the engine not run too often, so regular motor oil should give you adequate wear protection. Also synthetic oils can dislodge deposits that are preventing oil leaks, which you may or may not want to find.

Any oil that is CI-4/CI-4 Plus or CJ-4 is fine. Avoid oils that are SL or SM rated. I still prefer CI-4/CI-4 Plus, but getting harder to find. I found it by the 2 gallon jug @ Farm and Fleet here though in Mystic brand as a semi-synthetic for $19 for 2 gallons. Good price for any oil, let alone a CI-4 Plus spec'd oil that is semi-synthetic

IF you end up running an SL or SM oil, then you must run ZDDP additive, like GM EOS or a ZDDP additive from say Comp Cams.

Looks like the cheap and easy way is STP Red (4 cyl forumla) http://forums.noria.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/616604995/m/9231082891?r=7971055891#7971055891

http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html (I don't agree with his opinion on CJ4 oil, it is fine to use, the ZDDP levels in CJ4 are STILL higher than any S spec'd oil has been in the last 30 years around 1200 ppm)

Rotella T has had the ZDDP lowered to meet the new diesel standards, so I am sure the others have as well.

Interesting, are the Diesel oils recommended because of the ZDDP content? I have a VW TDI, maybe I can just use the same oil!

Agreed, but lower means they dropped DOWN to 1200 ppm (Rotella T said they went to), far above where S oil has been in many many years (probably since the early 70's). Although lower, it is still very high by gas car standards, which is why I am fine with it.

Bob on here years ago said that anything with a distrib gear needs high levels of ZDDP too.

10w30 or 10w40 is what you are looking for the 429. Also, look into buying GM EOS for adding ZDDP to help protect the engine.

Remember, too much ZDDP isn't a good thing either, so shoot for 1200 ppm or so, don't go nutty and drop bottles of it in there.

That is why I use the Rotella T, they are @ 1200 ppm with CJ4 spec oil. Good and safe limit. The drop on CI4 to CJ4 was only around 75 ppm, so don't fret about CJ4 oils being "bad", they are worlds better than SM spec'd oil and probably back to SF oils....

I ran Castrol GTX 10W 40 in winter and 20W 50 in summer. Used the small container of GM EOS on each change. Bought it by the case online.
