Anyone have the shop manual instructions for swapping out the water pump?
03 ESV
Apparently mine is starting to leak at the base gasket according to my mechanic.
I'd like to see the procedure so I can make the call if I want to swap it out myself or not. I think he quoted roughly 400 to do the job including parts etc...
While I dont have a manual I recently did a pump on my 02 EXT 6.0 and quite frankly it was the easiest pump I have done in a long time. I have yet to find a mass produced manual such as Chilton, Motors or Haines so I use all data I picked up the CD at the parts house and installed it. as I run a shop here in Il. I have snce gotten a subscription that allows me to view vehicles that otherwise have no printed manuals outside of the factory.
Four Hundred really isn't to bad as the pump itself is around 145 up for a new one and coolant at 12.00 per gallon depending on your area.
Do you basically just drain the coolant, remove both accessory belts, unbolt the water pump, replace with new, replace belts and coolant and you are good to go?
Totally do it yourself. did mine this last summer and have and a few pics if you want' em. Super basic install, if you know how to grunt and turn a ratchet. Just make sure to line up the new metal/rubber gaskets correctly be careful not to over tighten the bolts into that aluminum block. Have fun with all that coolant and Keep the dogs away!!
Oh yea, i got my pump off of fleabay for about $100. Its of great quality and not rebuilt. has a great warranty too. Dont remember the name but il look if you want it. peace
Good tips. If it's not too much trouble to find out where you got your pump, I'll take that info. I really want to make sure I get a solid pump so I don't have to do the job again. Might even call the chevy dealer to see how much they want for a brand new one. We'll see...
I would only get an OEM part for something like this. Its such an important part to the cooling of the motor and aftermarket pumps and thermostats tend to fail very fast (in my experience).
I'm with you. OEM would be my preference. I just went out there and couldn't find the part for 160.00. Got a specific link or a part # I can look up? Thanks man!
I've never had any issues with the aftermarket units on GM or imported engines. Its worth a look to compare prices... I've always stuck with the north american made products tho. I'm sure units from China must be available by now.. Depends on how long you plan on keeping your truck.
I had gotten a china water pump for my Integra once.... I shit you not the gear fell off the pump! And When I took it off there were 4 fins missing and stuck inside the coolant passages around the cylinders walls! It was only about a 6 months old. Those car were a lot of work to get to the pump too! (timing belt off, intake mani off, head off, 1 engine mount off, 1 torque mount off, etc.)
I told myself OEM parts only on anything that take more than 2 hours of work, unless of course its a known quality made piece. Cant say anything bad about GM aftermarket stuff, never had a problem yet. I do have an aftermarket belt tensioner that came with a lifetime warranty from AutoZone ($40 vs $110+) and the OEM's have no warranty.
Hey smelly............that sounds wierd...lol
Try the chevy dealer.....I have found that if the parts are identical for both the tahoe/escalade, they are indeed cheaper from Chevy. Learned the hard way, but still a lesson learned
Well, ive never had any problems with aftermarket pumps in the past and the pump i have now is working fine and side by side, really looks and feels of great if not better quality than the oem. I guess its the luck of the draw. But if you think about it, the whole reason your even looking for another pump is because the oem crapped out. My pump is made by GMB, not the most expensive but not the cheapest.
I've had to replace a water pump on a honda and it was just as bad as those on VW! There's a lot of hardware to remove before getting to it! So far, anything I've tried from china that has rubber on it has been crap! Either a seal, o ring, inner tube, it doesnt last! I sure woundnt dare to try condoms made over there!!! Best way to save your pump from leaking is to replace the coolant according to oem specs.
