: Copies for keys with pellets

I only have one key to my car. I know I can get a key made to get into the car pretty cheaply but never had experience of getting a key copied with a pellet on it before. Because I am fear that I will one day lock my keys in the car and have to break in or call a locksmith to get back in, I have to pat myself down for my keys like 3 or 4 times every single time before I get out of it.

Do I HAVE to go to the dealership to get a copy? If not, what are my options.

How much may it cost me?

You don't need a special door key, so duplicating that isn't a big deal.

You can get the ignition key blanks off eBay (http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=Cadillac+Vats+gold+key&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_dmpt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&_odkw=Cadillac+gold+key&_osacat=0) if you want some Gold Keys, and most of them have the chip in them already. You have to find out the resistance value of your key and then find an auction for a key that will match that resistance. If you can't find the right resistance, you can take the blank to the dealership (when they cut it) and have them change the chip.

You can also bypass your key. Read this thread:

Whenever I buy a new carI always get extra keys cut,I just had them done at an ordinary locksmith shop, a lot less than going to g.m. dealer.

Your locksmith made copies of the keys with the resistors?

I agree with cs, just about ANY locksmith will have the blanks and ability to read the vats, last blank I bought from the l/s was $15, and $5 to cut it

Yes he did, I was surprised too, I'm going back awhile, so I dont remember if he had to order the blanks in.
