the issue i am having is that when i drove home from school i stopped at a store for about 5 minutes and when i came back out the car said it was in drive 3 but was actually in park, because of this the car wouldn't start on the first several tries and still reads as being in 3 all of the time and is very difficult to start, what is the problem?
Neutral switch will prevent starter activity if tranny is not in P or N. The display in the dashboard moves with the lever, but I suspect the shifter cable to the tranny is to blame. When you say hard to start it doesn't crank at all?
last night was the first night it happened and it took about fifteen tries to get it to start, however when i went outside to start it up today i was outside for 25 minutes and it wouldn't even crank over. the battery is less than a year old so i dont think thats it.
Have a look under the truck on the LH side of the tranny for the cable bracket. The lock for the cable may be gone or loose, that could cause problems. If you can get help have someone go from P to 1 slowly and see if the gear selector on the tranny moves accordingly. Do you live in a cold area?
