Hello everyone,

Iíve done the searches and I will follow the proper procedure on replacing my coolant. This will be simply be a drain and change along with the 6 GM tablets. Not a complete flush. My question is how much coolant will I need to replace on a drain and change only (2000 Eldorado ECT)? I know how much the Northstar will hold on a complete flush but Iím not sure how much Iíll need this time. I know it can very but I want to have the mimium amout so I know how much to buy.

Thanks!

Buy one gallon of coolant and one gallon of distilled water. Pre mix it and you'll have some leftover.

Hey Ranger, so I should not buy the 50/50 pre mixed?

Why spend over twice as much for what you can do on a workbench in 3 minutes??

You get a gallon of DEX-COOL and a gallon of distilled water from the supermarket (dirt cheap). Use a 2-quart pitcher and pour half the water into it. Pour half the DEX-cool into the water jug. Pour the water in the pitcher into the half-empty DEX-COOL jug. BINGO !!! 2 gallons of mixed coolant (and the pitcher is still clean).

3 tablets, not 6.

Genius!

I thought I read to use 6 tablets to be even safer??? No?

Personally I would not use any of those things any more. They just clog heater cores and purge lines. Even GM quit using them.

So would everyone agree with Ranger and NOT use the tablets?

If you now have no weeps or leaks, why chance clogging up a heater core or purge line ???

Nope, no leaks so I will not be using the tablets. Thanks everyone for the advise.

Personally, I don't think 3, or even 6, tablets ever clogged anything - but if anything, maybe it would be the small purge line orifice on the '99 and older design engines. I did notice a distinct dried, brown coating on the outside of the cylinders and surrounding water jackets on my '97 when I did my HG, which I lightly wire brushed off with a long, small diameter, brass wire brush.

3 tablets per GM in the lower hose. I actually put mine in the upper hose because it was easier. You'll get about 6 quarts out so you'll need to put 6 quarts back.

Don't waste the money on pre-mixed coolant. You get half the coolant for more money. Buy a gallon of DEX and a gallon of distilled water. Make a 50 / 50 mix and you'll have 2 quarts left over for topping off later.

Codewize, did you crush your tablets first or put them in whole?

Crushed.

It is actually easier to put them in uncrushed. They will dissolve pretty quick and the water pump impeller will take care of the rest. The only reason for crushing them is on the 4.1, 4.5 and 4.9 they go in the radiator and due to the oil cooler line inside the side tank there is not enough room to get more than 2 in there whole.

I did not crush them. I put 3 whole tablets in the engine side if the upper hose.

This was about 3 years ago. However, I recently had a very minor coolant leak. I even noticed a few drops of coolant on the splash pan while changing the oil.

I took it into the dealer prepared to have the crossover gaskets done but they told me it wasn't leaking there. They did a leak-down test and found nothing was leaking. Odd, since I was loosing coolant and we all agreed there was a drip.

They added 3 more tablets to the lower hose. So far so good.

Yeah - that's what I think - like I wrote, even 6 tablets will probably not plug up anything you need to flow - except maybe the minor leak you are trying to stop. It will definitely make your coolant look muddy, though!
