I've just bought a 74 Fleetwood with automatic transmission. I want to know the difference between the two 'drives'. Can someone explain this to me?

Most likely one had one with OVERDRIVE enabled and the other without overdrive.....

It's a 3 speed transmission. So one D is 2nd gear, and the other is 3rd.

CaddyDaddy is correct. Use the one closest to neutral, the one on the left. That allows it to shift through all 3 gears.
