I have a 2005 STS V-6 with the premium package i believe it was called. A few days ago the car had trouble starting. I got in and pushed the brake in and hit the push start and it make a click noise then a buzzing sound for about 5-8 seconds. I gave it about 15 seconds and the nav screen and the displays came up and I tried once more and it started. I drove it for a few more days and it was fine up until today when it happened again. I have a service schedualed for tom at 7. Can anyone help me out as to what it might be. I have a feeling its the battery but if anyone can throw me any advice I would greatly appreciate it. thanks in advance

Sounds like my car back in Sept. I had to replace the battery. You need to look up the type, they are hard, but not impossible, to find. They are special batteries for this specific auto. All that "stuff" in these cars need a solid boost. Mine is also an 05 so I imagine it may be time for a new one. Try your very best NOT to get it from the dealer, they will overcharge you for sure. I will repost from home after I get off duty and am able to look at the receipt for the number and price I paid.
And, of course, get the system tested first.

Sounds as it could also be your starter. If your brushes are near the end of their lifetime they may be making marginal contact with the communtator and produce the symptoms you describe. Of course the first thing to check would be the simplist (and that would be your battery) but keep the starter in mind as well.

Battery - Delco 101-CYR, diagnostics (they confirmed it was the battery and not the starter, et al) and installation cost me $150.00 total.

I would avoid the dealer price and avoid an AC Delco. There are other alternatives. Try Interstate. Firestone sells them and will load test your battery for free.

As I found out last year with my wife's CTS, you cannot go to the local auto parts houses and buy an OTC battery for your CTS. The same holds true for the STS as I found out. The series of the battery is 101 for the STS. A dealer item only. They go for $178 and up depending on what dealer you talk to.

The parts houses will not sell you any sort of a replacement or try to fit something in of comperable quality saying "The incorrect battery was not made for that car and cannot warranty it." They are scared to even try.

I got in the yellow pages under "Batteries" and located a few businesses that stocked car batteries. I remember a place that my Dad used to buy Semi-truck batteries at. They looked it up in their books and came up with 101 as the replacement. They installed a battery of the same dimensions with the exception of the replacement battery being about 1/2 inch taller than GM DELCO coming out of the car. Had the same CCA as GM. Also the battery warehouse said, "It did not matter what car their battery went into, they would give the full warranty for it." A tight fit but no problems. Even the hold down mount matched up on the replacement battery and use the GM battery cover. Cost less than $70 with tax. It was the same on the CTS last year.
I checked to see what the number was on the replacement battery. It is a 78-72, side posts. Same dimensions as Delco, just 1/2 inch taller. It works fine.

I'm sure Interstate batteries would have a replacement you could install.

I don't know why folks have a problem finiding the original battery. They are not exclusive to the dealer. I live in a small town and we have several part houses that carry the Delco line. I paid $105 for my battery. Some folks say don't buy Delco............. My last two cars prior to the 05 dying after 3 years had the original Delcos in them for 10 years.

Your are one of the lucky ones. Do a google on Delco battery problems.

I think english is not your first language? May your problem be that when you step on the brake it acts like you did not?

There is a switch down there. If it is bad, that would keep the car from starting. A mechanic can check that easy, maybe free.

Good Luck!

Any time you have a no start problem if your battery is over 3 years old, first thing to check is the battery. 9 out 0f 10 times that is the problem. Batteries will last from 6 months to over 10 years. A starter will last like forever.

thanks everyone for the great advice. i took it to the local cadillac dealership and they tested the battery the starter and the alternater. it turns out it was the starter. all of it was covered under warrenty even my rental. I went from driving a cadillac sts to driving a 2009 kia optima for a few days. quite a jump in quality there i must say. they deffinatly need to take a look at countering the torque steer in that thing because it was way out of control.
