Check out this video I made in collaboration with my good friend Khalif "Ras" Williams in which we transformed his son (Welsley "Wise Sun" Williams) essay into video form! :-)

Hip Hop is dying due to commercial mainstream trash which has been condoned as the status quo, but you can still sift through some of the bull that is coming out and manage to hear something with substance, or at least someone rapping about something relevant to personal struggles. Artists are more concerned with making a dollar. I could go on all day about this though, but will decide not to..at least for now.

Nice video. Really pays tribute to some true MC's and the essay was put together real well also.

:hitstick:

There are two forms of "music" I could never stomach; Country and Gansta' Rap. Not all hip hop is/was bad, I still listen to some old school now and again....BUT this s**t they call rap/hip hop today is messed up. I can't even understand what the hell Plyes and Soldja Boy are saying and the "music" is either ripped off from somebody and rehashed or just down right terrible. It's as lazy as their lack of enunciation. Always about the "what I got and you ain't got" mentality. Pathetic.

Now as far as Country.... at least in Metal if something goes bad they sound angry about it, whereas all they do is WHINE about in Country. Oooohhh, I lost my dog....Oooohhh, I lost my truck....Oooohhh, I lost the love of my life because I'm a 16 year old tramp and daddy told me I can't marry Jethro so he move in with Elly May,....Oooohhh, my boyfriend/husband beats me and I don't like it.....:crying2: :wambulance: :crying: Shut up....

Regardless of what outsiders think, ...I was gonna say it currently takes skill to make it in the hip hop game but Soulja Boy has proven me wrong, but it once did take skill to make it big in the Hip Hop Game.

And every now and then there are some current artists that can annihilate a microphone..

This is Papoose, he can formulate entire versus beginning each word with the same letter and on command can change it up after being given a different letter to work with.

That second video link posted by Gary isn't available. As for Chad's three selections, I happen to enjoy all three of those songs.

I enjoy quite a bit of rap from the 80s, it's what I grew up on. I also have a love for the Miami Bass sound. But then on the flip side, my all time favorite band is Metallica. I can do anything but country or classical. I don't like the close-minded mentality many people have about rap and hip hop but when all they have to go on is what's on the radio; I can't say I blame them either.

90% of the rap/hip hip that comes out these days is garbage. However, there are still quality artists making quality music. One word: Atmosphere. My favorite rapper and still holds the title of putting on one of the best and most fun shows ive ever been to...and ive seen Pearl Jam and Death Cab for Cutie during their Vote For Change 2004 tour, Primus(on ecstasy), Nine Inch Nails...some pretty heavy shows.

I too cannot stand Country and cRAP.

I can listen to almost anything else.
Some old school hip hop some people named before is good.
This guy next to me at work listens to some Hip/Hop R&B station that has the lamest most no talent "music" I have ever heard and they play each song at least every half hour.
I let him borrow my radio and this garbage coming over the airwaves makes me want to take a hammer and smash my own property to bits.
Talentless dribble.

I wouldn't even have so much of an issue with it if the background music wasn't sampled from someone who actually took the time to learn to play a musical instrument.
Running down to radio shack and buying a CD sampling machine then using 6th grade vocabulary to degrade women and talk about drugs and living like a gangsta' is hardly what I would refer to as talent.
If I could stand to listen to it for more than 30 seconds at a time I am sure I would find some songs to listen to that are "good" but I don't see that happening.

As with all things, to each his own. The stuff I listen to would make people do horrible things too and I have no expectation that others must enjoy my favorite songs.
We live in a free country (for now) where we can all enjoy what we like.
I don't have to like what you like and you don't have to like what I like.
I can't say I'd be sad if everyone thought like me, my nerves wouldn't be so jangled at the end of the day...

My personal favorite is Scarface

8_g4l7k3b5E

Dudes MAD versatile, he can drop a really deep song like "What can I do" then switch it up and get grimey as hell on the next track...

(I'll post the lyrics so that the ones who say they can't understand the lyrics can understand)

WHAT CAN I DO

(Kelly Price)
What can I do?
What can I do, to make it better?
Yeah, yeah

(Scarface)
I thank the Lord, for every morning, he allows me to rise
And though the sun is shining, there's a cloud in the sky
Lettin' me know, that at any moment, there could be rain
And as beautiful as life is, there still can be pain
Down the park, I hear the sirens, just screamin' away
And then the unevitable happens, the end of them days
As sad as it sounds, but that's the price we all gotta pay
And the whole world knows God giveth, will taketh away (will taketh away)
I live and I learn, I sit and watch my cigarette burn
Down to the ash, it remindes me of the now and the passed
I say a little prayer, 'cause eventually I'll stand in the path
Of the souls and dark rows that lead to rest

(Chorus)
Do you hear them, crying?
Waiting for someone to come and dry their tears (someone like you and me)
Take away their fears

And then a child is born
Bloody legged, clingin' to life
Unaware of his surroundin's or breathin' is right
In the arms of his mother as he looks in her eyes
He takes his first breath and he screams (baby's alive)
At the same time, another mother, murders her kids
And the unbarable thought of this hear, just' brings me to tears
It's hard enough we gotta raise our kids to live in this world
So full of hate with no faith, and killin' your pearls
And sometimes, I sit it down, and wonder myself
But then again, I ain't Jesus, and I can't help
All I can do, is hope I never live with the fact
That if I heard one of my seeds is dealin' with that
That'd be the hardest thing, I'd ever have to do in my time
I'd have to take my own life too, and I couldn't glide
Instead what he'd, what you hear me singin' bout it in my ride
And a parent hurtin' his kid ain't decidin' the time
I know it's truth, the next day, we just livin' to die
But I believe if you livin' right, you'll live in the sky
Lookin' down on the good and the bad, the world as a whole
And hopefully you did what you did, before you had to go

(Chorus)
Do you hear them, crying?
Waiting for someone to come and dry their tears
(someone to dry their tears) Take away their fears
Can I make it, better? (I want to make it better)
Can I ease the pain that they are goin' through? (they're through)
What can I do?
What can I do?

I say "goodbye" to your cruel world
I see peace to the red sky
I see these are where the dead die, leavin' my head high
And if the streets up ahead crowd with the heat from the lead fly
But the grief when I said "Bye," pull the sheets on my bed dry
We're turnin' the table, we tellin' a tale
That the destruction of human flesh, and it not so great
Long list of the John Doe's, and Kauntly the spirit
With them jails of souls lost, we hope that God hears it
Resurection very harsh, crowdin' in the room
Muffle sounds on the outside, echo the tomb
But I'm cold

(Kelly Price)
Do you hear me?
I'm cryin'

(Chorus)
Do you hear them, crying? (x2 to fade)
Waiting for someone to come and dry their tears
(someone to dry their tears)
Take away their fears (take away their fears)
Can I make it, better? (gonna make it better)
Can I ease the pain that they are goin' through?
(everything they're goin' through) What can I do?
What can I do?

And unfortunately Im assuming we have some propogandist FOX news viewers on this website, so Im gonna balance out their biased reporting by putting up a song NAS did that is VERY inspirational.

Nas - I CAN

84uWGVAcKR4

LYRICS

[Kids]
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)

[Nas]
Be, B-Boys and girls, listen up
You can be anything in the world, in God we trust
An architect, doctor, maybe an actress
But nothing comes easy it takes much practice
Like, I met a woman who's becoming a star
She was very beautiful, leaving people in awe
Singing songs, Lina Horn, but the younger version
Hung with the wrong person
Got her strung on that
Heroin, cocaine, sniffin up drugs all in her nose...
Coulda died, so young, now looks ugly and old
No fun cause now when she reaches for hugs people hold they breath
Cause she smells of corrosion and death
Watch the company you keep and the crowd you bring
Cause they came to do drugs and you came to sing
So if you gonna be the best, I'ma tell you how,
Put your hands in the air, and take a vow

[Chorus - 2x (Nas and Kids)]
I know I can (I know I can)
Be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be)

[Nas]
Be, B-Boys and girls, listen again
This is for grown looking girls who's only ten
The ones who watch videos and do what they see
As cute as can be, up in the club with fake ID
Careful, 'fore you meet a man with HIV
You can host the TV like Oprah Winfrey
Whatever you decide, be careful, some men be
Rapists, so act your age, don't pretend to be
Older than you are, give yourself time to grow
You thinking he can give you wealth, but so
Young boys, you can use a lot of help, you know
You thinkin life's all about smokin weed and ice
You don't wanna be my age and can't read and write
Begging different women for a place to sleep at night
Smart boys turn to men and do whatever they wish
If you believe you can achieve, then say it like this

[Chorus]

[Nas]
Be, be, 'fore we came to this country
We were kings and queens, never porch monkeys
There was empires in Africa called Kush
Timbuktu, where every race came to get books
To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans
Asian Arabs and gave them gold when
Gold was converted to money it all changed
Money then became empowerment for Europeans
The Persian military invaded
They heard about the gold, the teachings, and everything sacred
Africa was almost robbed naked
Slavery was money, so they began making slave ships
Egypt was the place that Alexander the Great went
He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces
Shot up they nose to impose what basically
Still goes on today, you see?
If the truth is told, the youth can grow
Then learn to survive until they gain control
Nobody says you have to be gangstas, hoes
Read more learn more, change the globe
Ghetto children, do your thing
Hold your head up, little man, you're a king
Young Princess when you get your wedding ring
Your man is saying "She's my queen"

[Chorus]

Save the music y'all, save the music y'all
Save the music y'all, save the music y'all
Save the music

MheKZ5lNEcY

[intro sample vocals from "American Pimp"]
So much shit goes on it makes me doubt about a God -- you know, makes me ask
well if there is a God then why am I in the situation that I'm in?
Or why is my family going through certain situations
when I don't think that they deserve it nah mean?
Or why do good people suffer so much and bad people prosper so much?

[sample fades out as instrumental comes in]

[lighter sparking]

Yo
Goin out...we light this J up right here...for all the hard working folk
cross this country, cross the world
For everybody on the grind everyday 9 to 5, 8 to 12 -- you know how we do it
Hand to hand, whateva...
Yo, yo..

[Chorus - singing]
I been working all my life but ain't got nothin' to show
I ain't tellin' you nothing you don't already know
I been working all my life but ain't got nothin' to show
Like this world just don't want us to groooow

I been working all my life but ain't got nothin' to show
I ain't tellin' you nothing you don't already know
I been working all my life but ain't got nothin' to show
Wanna run up in tha white house and kick in tha do' ohhhhh

[Verse 1]
What a ***** gonna eat when the refrigerator empty?
Work all week let the bossman pimp me?
Can't pay no rent till the 15th
Landlord call the police to evict me
Lookin for a job in the want ads
Have you ever been to jail? Know they gone ask
Ever took a piss test that you didn't pass?
In between jobs in the past? How you get cash?
I done worked over hot ass stoves
I done picked up trash off roads
Winter time in the streets and the cold
Many times had to sleep in my clothes on the flo'
What you know bout bein' po' seein' most of yo kinfolk be on dope?
Ain't nobody in the hood got no hope in this ****ed up system and that's why we don't vote
Still payin *****z 4.25 - How the **** we supposed to survive?
I'm close to the edge, government takin most of my bread
in taxes might as well have this close to my head
Make a ***** wanna wild out
runup in the white house with the gauge out, CLICK CLACK!
GIMME MY SHIT BACK BEEYOTCH!

[Chorus]

Puttin' on my uniform, just a number on a W-4 form..

[Verse 2]
See where I'm from it's a few ways out
either rappin or sports either dope or the casket
You can work to the bone but don't put all yo eggs in one basket
We don't never get a piece of the pie
Work 50 years, retire then die
Stay po', rich folks is the criminal
but you don't wanna hear me tho' so
thank God it's friday, ain't it what we live fo'?
***** gotta get up out the plantation
Same job that my pop had before me
Imma pass it down to my seed ****ed up situation
Make a ***** wanna wild out
runup in the white house with the gauge out, CLICK CLACK!
GIMME MY SHIT BACK BEEYOTCH!

[Chorus]

My J-O-Beeee

Thanks for the correction koz.

For the record, I didn't mean to imply that I thought ALL hip/hop-rap music was awful, but enough of it is to keep me from wanting to listen to any of it.
I am sure there is some good stuff out there. I thought I posted that before, sorry I left that part out.

I stated my opinion, I can understand why some don't like it and that is just fine.
I used to work in music setting up equipment and running sound and lights for some small bands but I got tired of it.

I wouldn't necessarily mind checking some of the above links out but my time is limited here and I try to maximize it by helping people with advice. Every once in a while I make the mistake of thinking that I can express my opinion on a non-automotive topic for someone's consideration. Someday I'll learn I guess.

everytime I encounter erronous right wingers on a website I get banned. And Im trying to STAY on this site because I have a Caddy and I might need somewhere to go to get tips.

All I can say is that Im not here to convince anyone to fall in love with hip hop. I created this thread for the heads on the site who do like Hip Hop. And I will DEFEND hip hop if I feel it is under attack which is whats happening. But like I said, Im not here to convince people to like what I like. Im just on the defense.

And please do not say things like "people need to just let it go" because you do NOT know what people go through in their lives that gets them to where they are and why hip hop talks about the things it talks about.

I listen to music for enjoyment. I'm not looking for social commentary. I'm looking for melody, harmony and virtuosity. I'll leave the hate, rage, and feelings of injustice to those who can't let it go.
Koz,your pushing 70.You"re so uncool its not even funny on this topic, but here again I envy your restraint. This genre of music sucks on a biblical scale to me,vial, foul crap with no point.

Music has evolved IMO,all music. There is nothing else to be discovered, nothing ground breaking to do,all the rocks have been turned over.Kinda sad IMO.I wonder where this genre will be in 20 years?Lets face it,all musicians evolve from the past where this genre only copies, samples and packages it to pissed off teenagers.

To the thread starter, kudos dude, serious.I have now listened,I still don't get it and I never will.Thats my bad,I know opinions differ. Can I ask you this,do you feel this type of music will stand the test of time?Surely no one could have expected Arrowsmith still getting airtime 40 years after the fact on main stream radio. In my life,60's rock is todays country,70's rock is still a staple with every garage band in the world, the 80's were glam, the 90's were rock rap fusion with some alternitive mixed in.I know i like where rap has taken some metal,so I guess I like where rap has fused with other genres.I knew there was a compliment in here somewhere!:bonkers:

To each his own.

Hip Hop is the most attacked music genre in the world, simply because of its subject matter. Thats why people who are hip hop fans are so defensive. We grown up doing nothing but defending it. (Rightfully So)

Its nothing personal.

Like I said, it's ok to not like country music, and if I wanted to I could say things like "People like country music because it reminds them of their good ol Mississippi lynching days"

But I dont because that would be instigating. And I dont feel like getting into an 80 page debate. So therefore I dont instigate. There's a difference between simply stating you have other tastes versus saying things like "cRAP" and "they need to get over it".

I believe that hip hop songs from the 80's and 90's will still be played for decades but not as many from the 2000 era. There's only so many times I can hear "In da club". Ive been listening to it since 2003. Gimme something new. lol

See ,typically thats what I hear too 3 days a week at work, country the other two.I'm getting that you think a clear line has been drawn in the sand as far as rap goes?

I often find myself listening to jazz more and more,i think its just because I have such a short attention span with music. It's gotta be new,it's gotta be good,it's gotta be different. With what little rap I expose myself to,i kinda see some jazz getting fused into it now,do you feel this will be the next new?

Absolutely. One of Nas' latest albums was entitled "Hip Hop Is Dead" which pissed a lot of southern artists off.

Ice T (old school artist) went head to head with Soulja Boy (New artist) a few months back and called him garbage. Soulja Boy Fired Back.

Jay-Z came out with "The Death of Autotune" which was an undercover shot at T Pain! lol

Its New School vs Old School! LITERALLY! lol

Ive been getting into a little more Neo Soul here and there. Its good because even though Im not old, Im heading that way soon. I've been getting into the slow mellow vibes of Neo Soul more and more.

Plus I bump R&B just as much as Hip Hop.

I would HOPE that they infuse some Jazz into Hip Hop because this Fruity Loops Casio Keyboard Hip Hop we have now is trash. I hear the EXACT same snare drum solo on EVERY OTHER SONG NOW!

The best thing about Rush Limbaugh is not what he has to say; it's his stature in the entertainment field. The liberals have no one that even remotely resembles him in any way and it drives them wild. He controls the political conversation in America. Even Obama is afraid to tackle him head on. He's full of crap but he knows how to push the buttons.

I actually agree with you. The Conservatives are like a pack of Vipers, and the Liberals are like a pack of furry bunny rabbits. Which is why Obama is being pushed around on this health care issue. The right wing pushed him around so much he folded and from what I understand this new bill is crap compared to what we should have.

SMH I love Obama but dude is too soft. WAY too soft. I realized that after he spent his energy attacking Kanye for the Taylor Swift incident instead of going after the Tea Baggers at the Tea Parties and shutting down Hannity and Glenn Beck.

It's ironical that nearly all formally trained musicians hip hop, rock, and otherwise are trained in classical music because that's all that is taught in the colleges and universities. The next time you look up at some bare chested jackass on the stage screaming like a lunatic or pounding on a log you might try picturing him playing Bach or Chopin.

Wow this topic blew up quickly, but I'm an avid hip hop fan, but appreciate other genres of music. I listen to alot of old school R&B and R&B in general because it sets my mood and it's good to listen to it when you got your woman by your side. Sets the mood. Music mellows me and sets my tone for a day. It helps me get through certain situations. Neo-Soul is definitely one of the sub-genres of hip hop that I love to listen to because it give me a sense of what hip hop use to be and it is very calming. I mean I'll listen to a handful of country, and I'll definitely listen to rock. While I'm in the woods working or on the fire line in the summer I won't even listen to rap because I need something like Metallica, AC/DC, Foo Fighter, Weaver, 38. Special, Green Day, or Linkin Park to get me going on a whole another level. I even like hearing an artist such as Johnny Cash because he tells a story and most people are shocked to hear a black guy listening to that. I can even name a few others such as Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Queen. I even like to listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn on the guitar, because I think the guy was a beast on the guitar. My music library is insane and not just one dimensional. I think if you are a true music fan you go out and explore music and take from it certain things. I even have an avid reggae library. I've also been known to listen to Simon and Garfunkel....lol

The whole snap your finger era of Hip Hop will fade out eventually, just as the whole era of dope dealing rap is going out the window. There will be another stage in the next two years which may produce substance. Hip Hop is always changing and evolving. Most of the people on this board probably hear only mainstream garbage hip hop and that's they only know. A lot of these are these artist are entertainers now-a-days, and they are in it for the money and whatever is entertaining makes money. I can name plenty of artists who have four year degrees, and put on....hell half of them aren't even from the city that they claim to be from...lol. Those type of artists do not get a lot of respect from me. Music should be thought of as a form of art and not a tool of entertainment.

I mean it's hard to defend hip hop in many ways, but it is the culture that I grew up in and I will embrace it.

Will stand the test of time?

Yes, SOME of it will, while the bull in hip hop will sift through the cracks while the things that were classic will always be around. The old school era of R&B stood the test of time because there are countless advertisements I see on TV that have played these songs in the background or other genres of music have did renditions of these songs. I laugh at the idea of Heinekin(sp?) using the old Biz Markie song "You Say I'm Just A Friend." That's from the 80's. Also I see countless documentaries on hip hop now and the statements that it has made, so I know it will stand the test of time in its own way.

As far as politics...you all can have those arguments. I don't trust none of them...lol. I'm just me and have my own values and views. There are many other things I can put energy into because my debates in politics are redundant. Not knocking anybody's ideas over here.

There's a difference between free speech and hate speech and Fox news and Limbaugh practice hate speech.

Its nothing different than what the Nazi propoganda machine did in the 40's, as well as what the Rwandan radio did in the early 90's:
