Amazing the eye-candy you can discover while Googling.
Not exactly on-topic for this forum, but oh so beautiful a reminder of why we drive what we do.

That was back in Cadillac's heyday. The ads with the diamonds come to mind as well; Colorful, stunning ads that showcased the products. If only Cadillac could find a way to re-invent those ads for today's market...

I imagine that there is a place in the universe, where the clock never tolled on January 1, 1960. Where everything is as ascetically pleasing and everyone is as care free as those car ads make them seem to be. A simple place of good family values, were there is nothing foreign, and everything is built like middle America. A perfect utopia call 1959.

Looking at these pictures, I wonder what happened. Everything back then was sex on wheels, and the cars they have now... I want a refund and I don't own one. I seriously want to know if anyone buys them, because they like the way hey look, or if it's only because they're afraid of the questionable reliability and poor economy of a classic car. I also wonder if anyone will be collecting STS's in 50 years; like people collect Eldorado Brougham's today.

The cars today aren't worthy of that.

It's called... the Twilight Zone.

I wonder about this myself. What will my "Classic" car garage have in it when I hit middle age? A C6 Z06? A Porsche GT3?

It's an interesting thought. What will cars be like when the oil crisis of the 70's is a century in the past?

Here's one I snapped with my cell phone from a moving car. Sorry for cutting off part of it, but you can still she how gorgeous she is. (Though I believe this one's an early '60s model.)

Wow that is all I can say. I can't believe the US made such gorgeous cars back in the day, and are now putting out nothing but junk.

Not only were classic cars of the 50's and 60's such works of art, but they were high in quality. From the vinyl to the leather seats, to the quality of the fabrics, to the construction of the body, American cars in the 50's was all about quality for the consumer. Not to mention that Cadillac offered tons of the color combo's, mix and matching, it seems like the car companies back then had more selections for customers. You could customize your car to the exact way you wanted it to be. I guess you have to look at were America was at in those days, materials were plentiful, less people drove, GM Ford Chrysler all had to prove themselves so competition was fierce therefore creating better cars. Government control was less, so car companies had much more freedom to create and design whatever they wanted without questions, unlike today where everything has to meet some sort of government standard which has created nothing but bean cars.

My 68 cream coupe Deville was a real work of art, seriously it's pretty amazing how talented designers were in that time. Consumers I guess rather drive works of crap everyday, because that is what all cars today in terms of styling is. Every car from a Hyundai to a Lexus looks the same. Luxury cars aren't that much bigger compared to non luxury cars. So I really can't see why would anyone purchase a luxury vehicle today, other than wanting a small increase in styling.

Even right now Cadillac doesn't offer traditional luxury car buyers anything worth buying. I consider my 94 Fleetwood Bro the last real Cadillac, it's huge, 70's big, tons of space on the inside, clean modern yet Cadillac styling.

We will never see that golden age of cars ever again. It's really sad if you think about it. I truly believe people consider there current car a throwaway, non classic, basically a bland auto that will get crushed in a few years.

That wasn't the case in the 50's and 60's, people kept there cars for years. We just need to create a 50 MPG Cadillac, but retain the dimensions of big Cadillacs of the past.

Those are some nice pics, that 53-54 Cadillac is my favorite of all the years because of the Dagmar bumpers! Such perfection :)

At the risk of being lynched, or worse, banned, I'll defend the cars of today. They're safer, more powerful, have better fuel economy, and more creature comforts than ever. By every objective standard, they're far superior to the cars of the past.:canttalk::hide:

That said, I'll take my 1960 Eldorado Biarritz in Lucerne Blue with blue and white leather interior, thanks. I just got my '77 CDV out of storage this morning in preparation for a show tomorrow. Now, I really like my '01 ETC (my DD), but if I could, I'd drive the '77 every day. Even my '69, worn and dilapidated as she is, calls out to me to be driven. In the ETC, I'm driving a nice, comfortable, reasonably powerful car. But when I drive the '77 or the '69, I feel like I own the world.:cloud9:

Yeah they have more g-force, aren't as thirsty, don't kill you, and have flat screen T.V.'s, but nobody wants to look at them. Whats the point in driving you living room, when you don't care about it, past its retail value and how it makes you better than the Johnson's. They're superior through technology, at the expense of taste.

You are correct Sarah, it's a '60. I think those are more graceful and elegant than the '59s. They had the same basic body, but the tail fins are so much more simple and elegant.

Another great thing about old cars is how you can put on a classic album on from the year that car was made and it just feels natural. Like listening to The Beach Boys' 1966 masterpiece "Pet Sounds" in a '66 Fleetwood Brougham, or "Abbey Road" in a '69 Eldorado, or "Exile On Main Street" in a '72 Coupe DeVille, etc etc. :cloud9:

I noticed that yours is a black plate car. I want to put a set of those for my '69 Fleetwood Brougham. I heard the DMV will now allow that if you bring in the plates.

Here are two classy Cads I just happened to see somewhere. :D

I do like the '60s models more than the '50s, but it's probably my age. My personal favorite is the '67 because a childhood friend's parents had a '67 Fleetwood Sixty Special that they got used from his grandfather. I loved that car: big, black and more room in the back seat than almost anything that I've been in since. I'd love to have one someday.

Yes, up to and including 1969, that's what I've heard, too.
I think black plates look better than the blue one or the new "California" plates.
