I love my 2006 STS but hate the one-way remote start. I don't want to have to look or listen for my car when making sure the transmitter was close enough to start the engine.

Has anyone modded their STS with a two-way remote start? I want to use a system where the remote can tell me if the car has started or not. I do not want to carry an additional key fob, though, so I would want to replace all the features on the OEM one.

Surely someone has done this, right? What system did you use and what was involved with the installation?

I would be interested in this as well. 2-way would be great. Problem is since the fob is also the key I doubt any aftermarket system would work. It would definitely be cool though! I've wondered if a call to on-star could start it, but haven't tried and doubt they would do that.

I was wanting something like this as well.

I saw something like this for the Escallade and also saw it at a Chevy dealer as an accessory for some vehicles. What they both did was replaced the key FOB (I think) with a LCD FOB which lets you know when it is started and tells you the tire PSI, lets you control the A/C and a few other things.

When I asked if this was available for the STS they said no. But I hear they say no to anything they havent tried themselves. I have a 09 key FOB programmed even though they said it was impossible.

Maybe we could look into this and see if it is actually possible. I will ask a tech at caddy when I go there sometime.

I bet you could reprogram a COMPUSTAR to handle those functions...

I've seen this on Fox and Friends one morning might do what you want. You just need an iphone to do it... http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/10/15/remotely-start-your-car-with-iphone-using-viper-smartstart/

I distribute remote starts and I don't even have an aftermarket unit in my STS. It can be done but the drawbacks are not enough for me to install a unit for free/sales demo.

There is only one transponder/bypass interface made that will work with a STS and it requires you to bury a keyfob inside the vehicle. there are 2 issues with this. First is the cost of an additional fob and second is theft. A thief could break a window to get in the car and drive to a location were they could locate the buried fob and then have an operational vehicle. The thief would have to really know what he is doing but I have actually herd of this happening with a Vette that had push2start.

You do not automatically retain the automatic climate controls like heated seats and the defrost that will turn on with the factory remote start. Again it can be done but those functions will require a higher priced unit and extra charges for installation.

You will still need to Carry a factory fob in order to get in the car or to start it w/o using the remote start. There is no way around that as of now.

The Vette and STS push to start's are one of the few vehicles that cannot be interfaced to overcome these issues. I am really praying for the smart people to figure it out soon.

The SmartStart iPhone interface that stevenriz mention is extremely cool and innovative. It can be used in place of the aftermarket fob but you have to rely on your iPhone to have battery power and the car and phone to be in Wi-Fi or AT&T 3G range. You can still use you factory fob to operate the vehicle so its not a big deal if your phone is dead.

Nope, as of now it will only be available for the iPhone. There are contractual restrictions with Apple but I would expect it to be expanded in the future. I would have to assume the natural progression would lead to Windows Mobile and Android to follow. Truthfully I really don't know much of anything considering my sales rep for the company that makes the SmartStart wasn't even aware of it existence until 30 days before its release.
