View Full Version : DVD Nav Override? (I wanna play movies!)

:cowboy: Howdy friends!

Just picked up my new CTS last night. This thing is
fully loaded and beautifiul! The DVD Nav / Computer is,
naturally, the coolest part... And when I discovered it
ALSO plays DVDs, I thought I was in heaven!

You see, the only way I can get my wife to quiet down
for a long road trip is to stick a movie in front of her.
She's like a kid. Anything more than 30 minutes and
she starts bitching.

Anyway, I discovered quickly that you can only play
movies when the transmission is in "PARK". Bummer.

However, I completely understand Cadillac's thinking
on this. It's a no-brainer. ("LOCAL MAN FLIES-OFF
BRIDGE WHILE WATCHING MATRIX DVD - GMC SUED" ...etc)

But for us RESPONSIBLE drivers, there HAS to be a 'trick'
to overriding the system. I'd like to avoid buying a
portable DVD player if possible.

Is there a way to allow your passenger to watch DVDs
while the cars moving?

C'mon you hackers! Whaddya got? :worship:

Hey, did you ever get a solution to the DVD problem of it not playing while out of "Park"?

Excellent vehicle but this DVD thing is driving me nuts.

Anybody figure out the patch or bypass to make this work?

Well, I've already taken apart a lot of the panels and electrical connections looking for an obvious fix but nothing so far. Really thought that pulling and grounding the purple wire running from the shifter would have done it, but that wasn't the solution.

I'm open to any ideas and the warranty worry is not a concern.

I'm about to pick up an '03 Escalade, I'm guessing it will be able to do the same thing (play movies). I'm going to try and find the wiring diagram for the audio system. I know there is a Helms manual for my Acura that found that has all of the info and more, does one exist for the Escalade?

Ok this is just my 2 cents. Don't own an escalade but here goes

Logically speaking
The dvd only plays in park. So there has to be a sensor that is sending a signal to the system that it says when its in park. If you find that sensor and find a way to make it read that its always in park that would be the way to do. A shop manual SHOULD tell you where that sensor is and how it works. I would go from there good luck guys it would bother me as well.

yeah it's possible to buy the hack (try Ebay or search) to bypass the security feature (only play DVDs in park)... not a very big deal.

Maybe you could help us out with the search criteria you used on ebay? I don't know about others, but I've researched this extensively (including searching ebay) and as far as I can tell the only DVD Nav override available is for a Lexus SUV. I know that there is one for BMW as well, but nothing yet on the cadillac.

Thanks!

I emailed the guy who sells the mod for the lexus/toyota. He does not have anything for the GM stuff as of yet. Its only a matter of time, and I doubt its as easy as just "fooling it" to think you are in park by gounding on wire.

paulct,

Please keep us informed if the guy who does the Lexus fix comes up with anything for "our" CTS.

This has almost become an obsession with me now. There simply must be a way to bypass or work around that system!!

davesdeville,

Well, what happens when the "four wire" connector is disconnected is that the key won't come out of the ignition and you can't get the car to come out of Park.

I may go back in there and start grounding and checking the other three wires. For the time that I had that night, I was only concerned with the purple one as that was the one I had understood to be the "key" to the functioning of the "Park" module.

When I get back home (I'm in Hong Kong this week) I'll open up the console again and work with the other three to see if it's that simple.

Hmm, now that you got me to thinking, perhaps a switch in that line to turn off that purple/park connection might work. It would have to be "on" to get the vehicle moving (and the key to come out of the slot) but once in motion, it may very well do something else.

I'll get back home on the 25th and try it again.

Splitz,

Did you ever find a wiring diagram for your 2003 Escalade? Any info that we might use to track down the elusive "Park" DVD movie solution?

I can't find any CTS electrical pages now and the people I've talked to say they may not be available until next year. This doesn't make sense as I would imagine there has to be some wiring and tech manuals somewhere that we can get out hands on to find out what the logic is in the "Park" circuit to drop out the video.

No I have not been looking because the Escalade Nav does not play movies at all, I just get something like "DVD Map Error." So I figure it doesnt work, and I stop bothering looking for it.

Here's my 2 cents, being a pro audio installer for almost 18 years now...

first, be carefull with arbitrarilly grounding unknown wires! why? Because many circuits in the car are very sensitive and doing this, even once and very quickly, can damage the electronics in the vehicle or at least trigger error codes. Many old techiniques (test lights, dc battery speaker pulsing, etc) are all strictly taboo on todays newer hi-tech cars.

This vehicle, as well as many other makes/models make use of data bus architecture to control many of the components in the car. The components have data addresses and the control modules (ECM, BCM, GEM, etc) send and recieve data from these addressed components. (you can think of the data bus in terms of your home pc's USB devices all connected together, doing their own tasks, but working on one bus).

I feel that your problem will not be some simple fix like grounding out one wire; that works on most aftermarket video systems. There is no single wire directly connected from the DVD to a sensor or micro-switch on the shifter gate. I am guessing that the sensor in the transmission sends its data to the computers, which use that data in controlling fuel system functions, ignition system, speedometer display, etc.. and yes even DVD display on the radio! Disruption of this data going into the computer would probably affect many systems and not just the DVD...

NOW, that said... there STILL may be a way theroretically to do it...
It would probably require a digital data spoofing device that will plug inline between the radio or dvd unit and the vehicle's harness. It will have to do two things:
- "LIE" to the onboard computer to give a "status normal" reading back so the computer does not register an error code.
- "LIE" to the DVD player, never passing a video shutoff code from the computer.
There are companies that make digital interface devices that allow us to replace OEM radios with aftermarket units in data bus vehicles. It is doubtful, howerver, that any of them would market a product to allow motion video while driving as it is very dangerous and illegal in all 50 states. Plus, think of the legal liabilities that would accompany it (my son was killed in a collision caused by a driver watching a DVD using your bypass unit!)... so don't hold your breath waiting for such a device.

I install aftermarket a/v products for a living and have customers who want video interlocks to be bypassed on units within the drivers view, but we sternly refuse to do it for the exact same liability reason. Many argue that they only want it for the passenger to watch and that they will not watch it. My arguement is that i bet they cannot walk by a television in their own home without looking at it, let alone sit 12 inches away from one and not be distracted! They also argue that if we were to do it for them, they would accept all responsibility and claim that they did it themselves! yeah... right up until that liability lawsuit is filed against them!

If you want video for your spouse to watch while driving, install a slim TFT video monitor in the passenger sunvisor and or use a portable dvd player It would probably only cost you a few hundred dollars either way and will be better in the long run.

that's my take on it... thx BigJohnnyC

BigJohnnyC,

Thanks for your expert opinion on what we may be facing with this DVD play in Park thing. I was hoping it wouldn't come to that, but I guess I was just hoping it would be something simple, like a ground or trace that could be worked out.

Anyway, here's hoping something turns up eventually and we can play the DVD from time to time instead of dorking around with the map, phone, addresses, views, disks, audio, users, scans, seeks and various adjustments on the screen that we can do now.

Just seems kind of odd that all of that other stuff can be screwed around with and not just play the DVD.

Hey, you're welcome!

Yeah, its kinda odd.. the law is that no FULL MOTION VIDEO is allowed in front of the driver's head when driving. The only exception to this is a video camera aimed out the back of the vehicle that is used as an electronic rear view mirror. Most aftermarket systems will only display that video signal only when the car is in reverse, triggered by the back-up light circuit.
I also feel that video based navigation systems can also be very distracting. I have roadtested several sytems after installing them and I caught myself watching the screen and ignoring the traffic! Realistically, one should stop the vehcile on the side of the road somewhere before keying anything info into a navigation system. As nav units become more commonplace in newer cars, there probably will be legislation passed concerning their operation, much like the recent laws banning the use of cellphones while driving.

Hello,

Send me a ticket to SW Florida (or pay expenses) and I will guarantee that I will figure your DVD problem out. :coolgleam I've done a tremendous amount of customization to automotive electrical systems and have almost 20 years experience doing remote start systems, anti theft systems, stereo systems with motorized parts, modifying factory systems to perform with aftermarket systems, digital dashwork and many other customized electrical fabrications. If the system works in park, it can work anytime - it is just a matter of locating and reconfiguring circuits. I am sure a hack will be available sometime in the future, if there isn't one out already, but if you cannot wait and just have to have it done, one option would be to contract someone of considerable experience like me to do it for you. Take care.

Well, as many have found out, this unit cannot play dvd movies. Now, there is a way to watch movies on this unit, but it's an expensive price to pay to get it to do it. This unit does not have an video input. There are two places I know of that will modify the unit and add a video input. http://www.avelectronic.com/products.htm or http://www.nav-tv.com/. You send them your radio, they open it up and install the video in connector. Once this has been done, say goodbye to your warranty. Their unit takes the input from your DVD player, rear camera, TV tuner, etc and displays it on the screen of the navigation unit.

Costs? Over $1000. Outrageous! :canttalk:

Here is a pic though:

I just got an 04 DTS and I hate the fact that the GPS ignores me (and the wife too) as soon as the car moves. This is not the same risk as watching a movie. The many voice commands (I love them) including GPS - do work at all times. Except that none of them let you change where you’re going. Any fixes out there? It could very well be that the same fix applies to both DVD and GPS.

I was told that there is a Brown wire that needs to be disconnected. I don't know which or where YET!!!

DTS

It must be the wire telling the NAV that the car is in gear. I had a similar issue with my Toyota and I found out that cutting one wire solves everytihg. So, where is that wire?

OK Fellow Caddiers, over in the SRX Forum, we've got the "crack"--IF your NAV system is a Denso like ours is. (yours might not be)

Push & hold the musical note for at least 3 seconds to get to the "code" screen. Enter 1791 and hit ENTER. Now, if you remove your NAV DVD and insert a DVD movie, it'll play all the way to TIMBUCKTOO! Remember, though, this is ILLEGAL!

Now we're working on a way to use all the route menu while moving. By the way, the "cut-out" is NOT wires, it's part of the speed sensor system.

Come on over to our forum to sign up for the # volunteering! We need all the help we can get. :welcome:

In the CTS, up to model year 2004, you can watch video DVDs while in motion. There is a bypass for this on the internet, but you have to activate it after every ignition cycle.
For model year 2005 there is no bypass.
The navigatio unit uses the Class2 data bus to receive and send information. One message on the Class2 bus PRNDL status. When the BCM or ECM sends a "Park" message it is picked up by the nav unit and processed internaly alowing video DVD playback.
As soon as the vehicle goes into Reverse, Neutral or Drive the BCM or ECM sends the appropriate message over the Class2 bus and the nav unit stops video DVD playback, althou on some model you still get DVD audio.
Can this be bypassed? Yes. Is it worth it? No
You can generate a "Park" message and send it over the Class2 bus, from an authorized address, and filter the "RNDL" message.
You can also disconect the Class2 data bus from the nav unit and generate your own messages to alow the unit to operate but you will miss many things like Temperature, Chimes, BOSE amp control .....

There was a thread a while back on how to do this....It works great, if i remember correctly you play the DVD in park, then you hold down the bottom 2 buttons on the right of the screen as well as the disc change button on the right side, then put the car in drive the DVD should remain playing....If this doesn't work do a search about a year back I got it off one of those threads...good luck

I've got an '02 EXT and I just replaced the stock stereo with a Panasonic N-2 nav/radio. I then replaced the stock 6 cd changer with a Power Acoustics DVD/CD/MP3 player and connected it to the Nav-2 as an input. Now I can watch a movie and have nav going at the same time on the units 6.5" screen. I then replaced the audio controls on the rear of the center console and put outputs there (audio & video) so that I can connect to a portable screen for the rear seat passenger (haven't gotten into other screens yet, but I will) This way, the rear seat passengers can watch or listen to whatever they want (and control it via remote) via the power acoustics player. I can alternately have DVD, Nav or both on my screen at the same time....

Pretty neat setup. It's also hooked to a rear view camera that comes on automatically in reverse.

Try the Chevy Avalanche Fan Club Site and look in the audio video navi forums http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/index.html Look up Sperry, he has an Escalade Navi in his Avvy with a backup camera and video bypass. He can probably direct you where to get answers if he doesn't already know them.

Hi guys, i hope this helps some of you...

I do not have NAV, so i cannot try it out. It is for 2003-2005 CTS and CTS-V.

You already know how to trick the unit into playing a DVD (it has been posted in several forums) , and you also already know that you lose all funtions.. of FF, RW.

According to another poster, not me, as i am just passing this on and take no credit in finding it what so ever.

You can regain FF, and RW by programing, and useing them through the steering wheels preprogramable memmory buttons....

Let me know how you guys make out. :)

If you hold the music symbol button down for about 5 seconds, then type 1791 on the keypad that should appear then hit enter.

You should then be able to play while in drive.

I have an '05 CTS-V and have no problem watching dvd's while the car is in motion. There is a trick to it and you do have to do it everytime, but it sure is great watching on the factory system without any modifications. If anyone would still like to know how let me know.

So... what is the deal with this one?

The overide is easy. First put the DVD in the slot for the navigation DVD. Next engage the parking brake and let the DVD start to play. Select the play option for the DVD and let it start to play. On the keys on the right side of the display press the second key from the bottom and the CD select forward key simultaneously. Disengage the parking brake and voila it should allow you to drive off and watch your DVD

ok ok. i HAVE to post this! i found a solution to play your DVDs WHILE driving and without needing ANY mod! all you have to do is first - put your car in park...put the movie in. then on the right side (of where the 6 buttons are) put one finger on the 2nd to last button from the bottom and another finger on the seek > button. then tap both of them twice at the sametime - put your car back in drive and your DONE! its FREE, EASY - but it may take you a few times to get it right the first time but i PROMISE you it works. I play jay-z's dvd FADE to black so its a live concert in my car and i bump that shit all over hollywood. it's like a concert on wheels! let me know when you get it workin! remember - anything man made can be man broken!

Wow.....my mom took her Toyota into the dealer and complained about it not playing DVD,s and regular broadcast TV while driving so the mechanic at the dealership drove it to some shop where they installed a switch that 'fools' the system into thinking its in park.

She had it done to her previous model Toyota too (but back then , they disabled it right there at the dealership.....maybe they got into trouble)

Well i can point you in the right direction as i am a professional car audio installer. On front seat dvd packages by law wea re required to ground the dvd to a parking brake so that when the parking brake is engaged you can watch the dvd player but when you take it off it will only dispaly a screen saver or w/e your dvd shows. Now all we do if we wanted to bypass it is to ground that wire anywhere and viola you can watch whole driving. If i had a wire schematic for the dvd/nav system i could probably pinpoint GMs wire they use to ground out. My guess would probably be like on the nuetral start safety switch or transmission because thats most likely where your sensor is to send the out of park signal.

HMorse,

I have an 06 STS as well and am feeling the same frusterations. I have tried to get someone at the dealer to give me the secret override, but they insist there is not one. They fall back to use the voicetags to dial the bluetooth phone while in motion.

Also for nav they claim you can do most anything with voice commands.

I have found that the voice activation works about 1/2 the time, the other 1/2 you get lots of fun suprises....There has to be an override somewhere to allow you to use the systems while in motion!

hmorse

I agree, the voice system does not work well at all. Onstar's phone voice system seems to work far better, but their cost per minute is way out of whack.

I went to a place that sells wheels and installs all kinds of car stuff including dvd players and they told me that for $625.00 they could do what they call a navigation conversion and that it would then play dvd movies so I hope thi helps you guys? I still don't have a fix either, however this mayh be a clue for the more inclined. We install radars in policed cars. The newer units plug into the harness for the computer and this senses the motion of the vehicle thru the speedo. This in turn switches the radar unit from stationary to moving mode. I beleive this is the same thing for the cadillac. As with my STS, I can watch movies and use the phone in drive but as soon as I start to move, the system switches over, when you stop it comes back.

perhaps another location for you hackers to look for.......

for the cts you need to have the car in park, hold the second to bottom readio preset button and the forward search cd button for about two or three seconds and then put it in park.....the movie has to already be playin though.....check out cadillacfaq.com do a search and you will find more detailed instructions:thumbsup:

well i just read up on all of this override. I have an 05 CTS-V, manual. So the DVD NAV only works with the parking brake on. Has anyone found that parking break wire and grounded to a ground, or even wired it to a switch to make it think the brake was on? I know that all the HIGH end units have built in GYRO sensors that can tell when the unit is in motion and will disable video, im sure the GM guys are that smart though. Any input would help. Thanks

I read a few pages of this thread and thought I might know something you could try -
my friend bought an aftermarket in-dash monitor with dvd, etc. I wired it all in for him. There was a wire that was supposed to run to the parking brake. Only problem, we wanted it to work all the time, another problem, too much of a pain in the ass to get the wire down to the parking brake. I figured out how this mechanism works - when the parking brake is engaged, 12 volts (common electrical current for almost if not all car accessories) is used to send a signal to several things in the car - light on dash or in instrument cluster to tell you the parking brake is on, etc. since it only played when the wire was receiving 12 volts from the engaged parking brake.

THE FIX - I went to the wiring harness for the monitor - unwrapped the electrical tape and soldered the wire onto the 12 volt positive wire and re-taped. Works like a charm all the time now.

:cowboy: Howdy friends!

Just picked up my new CTS last night. This thing is
fully loaded and beautifiul! The DVD Nav / Computer is,
naturally, the coolest part... And when I discovered it
ALSO plays DVDs, I thought I was in heaven!

You see, the only way I can get my wife to quiet down
for a long road trip is to stick a movie in front of her.
She's like a kid. Anything more than 30 minutes and
she starts bitching.

Anyway, I discovered quickly that you can only play
movies when the transmission is in "PARK". Bummer.

However, I completely understand Cadillac's thinking
on this. It's a no-brainer. ("LOCAL MAN FLIES-OFF
BRIDGE WHILE WATCHING MATRIX DVD - GMC SUED" ...etc)

But for us RESPONSIBLE drivers, there HAS to be a 'trick'
to overriding the system. I'd like to avoid buying a
portable DVD player if possible.

Is there a way to allow your passenger to watch DVDs
while the cars moving?

C'mon you hackers! Whaddya got? :worship:

To watch a movie in my 04 CTS I put in movie and let it begin to play. Car is running and in park, on the right of the screen push the second to the bottom(radio preset) button and the rectangular seek/cd discskip button forward>(push to the right) at the same time and hold for 2 sec. Drive Safe... I have heard different variations work on diff. cads. Try preset then push forward seek or seek then preset. Hope it works!

It took me a little while to figure out *exactly*what the key sequence was to get the CTS-V fix to work, and for me the best method to get it to work was to hold down the "next track" button (right "seek" arrow) and then tap and release the second button from the bottom, then release the parking brake. Works every time without fail, where for me the "double tap" method didn't work every time.
I think what's basically happening is that you're getting the diagnostic screen for the nav unit, which probably stops it from listening to the data bus temporarily, but for some reason the DVD picture & sound has priority over the diag screen so you're not seeing it. If you do that same key sequence while you're NOT watching a DVD you get the diag screen which on my '04 CTS-V allows you to cold-start the GPS (not recommended - when I did that my car thought it was on Manhattan Beach in California and driving off into the ocean, and took a good 5-10 minutes to re-aquire a GPS fix). There's also some Nav system version information in there.
I think the best technical solution to this problem would be to create a filter that would read the messages on the data bus, and allow everything through except for whatever two messages tell the Nav system that you've released the parking brake and you're moving more than 3mph. I don't know if it's just my imagination or not, but it seems like the nav system allows you to enter destination addresses and stuff for a little while if you're moving very slowly. It could be that it allows entry under a certain mph (like 3mph or something) or it could also be that the vehicle speed is only broadcast on the data bus with a certain frequency and the message just hasn't gotten to every module yet...
Unless the Nav system is doing the "speed > 0" or "speed > 3mph" calculation internally based on the vehicle speed being available on the data bus, it should be possible to filter out the "parking brake release" and "vehicle moving" messages without crippling any other functionality of the Nav system, like the distance travelled functionality that allows the nav system to tell where you are even when you're in a tunnel and don't have a GPS signal.

-B

PS: I'm not a digital signal guy, so I would have no idea how to selectively filter out certain data bus messages, but it might be as easy as just having a couple of NAND gates and comparing the messages coming across the bus against some dip switches that represent the message you're trying to filter out.

now im not sure if any one has already done this or said this but you know the wire that sences that the trannsmission is in park, wire a switch to that so that way when you flip the switch on it senses the car is in park and then you can watch the DVD... i don't know how it works exactly but i have seen it done...

Taaadddaaaa!!!!!!!
Here are the steps to be driving, riding, and watching (Be safe, if you are diving, do not watch screen!!)

Step 1 Put in DVD.
Step 2 Play DVD (Do not leave it at the front menu, if you do not start the DVD you will not be able to start it after you begin to drive.)
Step 3 While playing - Hit the second from the bottom buttons on the right hand side of the DVD screen and then press the forward Seek Button. (You will see a little flicker)
NOTE: If you see a differnt screen with the words "cold reboot" on it, press the same button combination AGAIN and it should go back to the DVD...

Step 4 Now disable the parking break and make sure that the DVD stays on.
Step 5 Enjoy CTS brothers & sisters!

If you did everything correct you will notice that all the features are disabled. If you are at the main menu of the dvd you will not be able to select play movie or any features.

If you would like to stop the dvd, you must hit the top right button first. Then it will bring up the safety lock if you are in motion or parking break off.

OK guys, it seems like there's a fix for everything, including the DVD issue. Problem is, I've got the '08 (well, not really a problem..) and I need to learn how to override the DVD system as well. Anyone crack the new one yet?

thanks,

Scott T

Isn't there a better way yet to get the DVD top play, instead of going through the whole preocess explained on the previous page? It would be a pain in the but once I'm cruising down the freeway and decide to pop a dvd in, but have to pull over on the side of the road to do the button trick first.

I managed to get the unlock code for my 2002 dts off of EBAY. I now have an '06 DTS and am looking for the same guy on EBAY....Pull up CTS unlock code or simply just pull up CTS in EBAY motors, scroll through and you will find the answer to your problems !

I cant believe people actually paid for the 1791 code. Found it on this site way before it was on ebay. Ah well. Guess its too soon for a hack on the 08s.

I did it! I found it!

I accidentally found how to get the PIN Code key touch pad on the 2007 model of Cadillac SRX.

It is Japanaese version, so it may look different on yours but try to do on the same way.

First, set DVD and watch it, and puch "Menu" botton like the picture below.
http://kk2h.4th.jp/image/pincode1.jpg

Second, select the "Disp Menu" (or something like that in English) Tag and Push and hold the left bottom of the screen for about 5 sec like the picture below.
http://kk2h.4th.jp/image/pincode2.jpg

Third, now the screen shows the Key Pad like the picture below!!!!!
http://kk2h.4th.jp/image/pincode3.jpg

HOWEVER!!! The key pad asks me 6DIGITS of the code!!!!!!!
Could someone help to find it???!!!!

I tried doing this on my fathers 08 DTS. Works for it! How did you figure out to hold down the left part of the screen? Thats crazy! Wow. Now all we need is the code...

So far, PIN CODE "295660" and "660" gives me some instesting Diagnostic mode.
But with this "660" code, you have to push and hold the power switch until the power goes down to return to the normal screen.
So, I think it doesn't have to be 6 digits since code 660 does something.

The Code 295660 also works on some Corvette and some Range Rover with Denso system.

There is a device that does everything you want it to do. Play dvds, enter navigation info, and view your rear camera while driving. Its called a locpick. You can find it at www.coastaletech.com.

There is debate about whether or not the locpick works with the 07-08 SRX. Coastaltech has the absolute worst customer service so it is impossible to know unless someone wants to spend the $450 to find out. Let us know if you have. :rant2:

There is a unit you can buy and install inline.

Good Luck, I have not done it.

The Coastal Lockpick system works perfectly. I have both the IPOD/Iphone and the DVD/NAV units.

Just make sure you do not try to install the units yourself. Take it to a car audio installer unless you know what you are doing.

Hi, I just joined...HI!....., so I've very new to the Cadilllac nav system. I'm going to get (ebay) an install a factory nav in an '04 cts. I've read SOME of the "how to's" on adding the factory nav, but I'd like to do this "upgrade" also. This thread has 17 pgs to it now, so can anyone provide me with an abridged version of this thread......or like a link to a typed "how to" or something like that?
